Thankfulness is an abstract concept for children ( and sadly some adults! ) so often we start with talking about what is important to us such as family, friends, pets, and things such as our home, food, or a special toy. Being Thankful November is a wonderful time for us to talk to the children about being thankful. What exactly does it mean to be thankful? Thankfulness is an abstract concept for children (and sadly some adults!) so often we start with talking about what is important to us such as family, friends, pets, and things such as our home, food, or a special toy.

Independence It is hard to believe but since school has started, most of the children have learned to put on and take off their own clothes and shoes by themselves.

We are working on zippers, buttons and buckles right now with many of the students able to do this as well.

Your child has learned that there is a place for everything in the classroom. They know that if they take work off the shelf, that they must not only put it back in its proper place but they must do so before they take out another thing.

Your child can pour himself something to drink from a pitcher into a cup, spoon food onto a plate, chop vegetables and fruits, and spread butter and cheese onto crackers and bread.

Encourage your child to do these things at home as well. Independence is a wonderful gift to give your child (and it will free up some of your time as well!). You will also notice by allowing your child to do these things that they will become more confident and willing to try newer challenges.

“The essence of independence is to be able to do something for one’s self.”

PRACTICING BEING THANKFUL WITH YOUR CHILD

When your child is happy, draw attention to the feelings that he/she is having at the moment. Say something like, “I can tell you are happy about seeing your cousins. Aren’t you thankful we were able to have fun with them !”

When your child has recovered from being sick and can play again, say something along these lines, “It is good to see you playing again, aren’t you thankful that you feel better so you can play again?”

When a child gives something to a friend, draw attention to the ability to give to others by simply saying, “Doesn’t it feel good to be able to give to your friend? Aren’t you thankful that we were able to do that for them?”

When you have a wonderful outing with family or friends, reflect on the time or events by asking your child what was their favorite moment of the day. After having some time to discuss these memories, add a reflection like, “Aren’t you thankful that this is something that we were able to do?”

The more you identify the feelings that a child will have naturally and introduce the vocabulary of ‘thankfulness’ the easier it will be for your child to learn what it means to be thankful. .

TCMH is thankful and welcomes Gabriella Bertin (Infants) , Micaiah Joseph (Infants), Noemie Lancello (Infants) and Beatrice Francis (Toddlers) to our family.
