This book is © Lonnie Readioff 2017, though the original charts that this book is derived from were first produced in Disc / Disc and Music Echo (1958-1967). The book is presented on an as-is basis. While every effort has been made to make sure it is free from defects I will not be held responsible if it does nasty things to your computer. Though it shouldn’t. But if it does, it’s not my fault.

Notes on the text As with any book of this nature there are mistakes inside its pages. I would be stupid to think that there were none. So, if you spot a mistake and let me know, I’ll correct it and you’ll get your name in the book. Drop me an email at [email protected] and I’ll check out the error, though I also welcome praise and criticism, both for the book and the layout of the book. Various publication errors, including incorrect positions, have been identified and corrected by reference to the original chart issues. Corrections to titles, label details and other information by reference to internet searchers and copies of the original records I’d also like to thank my wife for encouragement in this project, Alan Smith for assistance with providing some of the original charts and Kjell Naas for data checking the Ones To Watch.

Disc – A History (The following account is adapted from a paper produced by Alan Smith and it is with grateful thanks to him that has anabelled the production of this book.) Disc began in February 1958, with a Top 20 and one “Ones To Watch” (the equivalent of the Breakers chart). These Breakers were un-numbered but have been numbered in printing order from 21-25 (though usually only one was listed). The chart was compiled from twenty five random phone calls to dealers around the country and compiled on a points, rather than sales, basis. Each dealer would provide a list of their twenty best selling records and these would be recorded by Disc from their phone calls. Points were awarded as 20 for a number 1, 19 for a number 2, etc . Because only twenty five shops were phoned, many tied positions were preelent in the early charts. On 6th October 1962 the chart expanded to a Top 30, and the breakers (Ones To Watch) was discountinued. Around 50 dealers were called now and advance orders were also accepted meaning that records from popular artists (such as Elvis) entered very high up the chart. By 1964 the chart was based on between 80 to 100 returns and on 23 April 1966 the chart expanded to a Top 50 when Disc absorbed the failing paper Music Echo to become retitled ‘Disc and Music Echo”. The LP chart began at this point, listed at the end of this book. Up to this point LP’s and EP’s were able to chart on the main chart. Advance orders were abandoned and only over the counter sales were accepted. From 1 April 1967 the paper reduced the chart from a Top 50 to a Top

30 due to low sales in the lower regions of the chart. On 26th August 1967 the last chart was published as the following week the paper’s chart was merged with Melody Maker to save money. Disc would then phone 30-50 shops and, combined with the 200 plus mailed returns from Melody Maker, would be used to compile the full chart. The chart was taken to be the Melody Maker chart form this date, and so the research for this book ends on 26th August 1967. Alan Smith (2005) (Adapted 2017)

Title Listing This is an alphabetical listing of titles, sorted by their first letters. Any title starting with “A” or “The” is listed under the second word. Titles starting with brackets are listed first under the first letter in the brackets. Some titles or artists may be truncated from how they appear on the label for reasons of space. The peak and the year of first chart entry of the title is shown. Where the same title charted in the same year, the entries are sorted by the highest position reached by that track. In the event of two or more records reaching the same position, they are listed alphabetically by artist.

The Albums Artist Section

Lists, in alphabetical order, every one of the 92 albums that charted on the Disc Album chart when they compiled their own.

All the album charts between 23 April 1966 and 26 August 1967 are included.

The album chart lasted for just over sixteen months and was a Top Ten for its entire run. It began on 23 April 1966 with the Rolling Stones as the first number 1 and ended when the paper merged, at least in chart terms, with Melody Maker on 26 August 1967 with the Beatles at number one. In total seven albums topped the chart with the soundtrack to The Sound Of Music racking up 21 non consecutive weeks at the summit, tiring with the Beatles for most weeks at number 1 (though they took two albums to achieve Thai feat. In all 92 albums made the chart with almost every single one making the official chart, as published in Record Retailer. The only one which did not? Look under M and Warren Mitchell may be found. It only spent one week on the chart as listed in Disc and it is highly unusual for an album to reach the top ten in one chart, proported to be the national chart, which did not reach at least one position in another. That said, the week it charted the entire Top 40 in Record Retailer (adjusting chart dates for sales periods) was self contained with no new or re entries. Either way it remains the only album listed here to be unique to this chart (it's also not listed in Melody Maker or N.M.E.) Not a single week went unpublished, so sit back now and enjoy the 71 charts that make up the Disc album charts
