Walk from Villa Crespi down to the village square (15/20 minutes) admiring the villas and lake views, and take a short boat trip from the charming medieval village of Orta to the Island of San Giulio. The island is inhabited by a closed order of Benedictine nuns who live and work in silence. Enjoy the walk along the Way of Silence which at intervals will dispense pearls of wisdom written for visitors by the Abbess, Anna Maria Canopi, as you stroll around the island, contemplating its beauty. The Basilica is decorated with fascinating frescoes and contains a rare example of medieval stone pulpit, depicting serpents and dragons and San Giulio himself who, legend has it, freed the island from these pagan monsters in the late 4th century.
