ABOUT THE SHOWSet in New York City at the turn of the twentieth century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of young “news-ies” who dreams only of a better life far from the hard-ship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. With help from the strong and feisty female reporter Katherine Plumber, all of New York City soon recognizes the power of “the little man.” NEWSIES is inspired by the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, when a band of orphan and runaway children took a two-week-long action against news-paper publishers Pulitzer and Hearst.
AUDITIONS: JANUARY 8 at 9am, 11am, 2pm JANUARY 21 AT 1pm, 3pm

“ THE P ERF E CT MUS I C A L FOR OUR T IMES ! ”
“ EXH I L ARAT ING ! A JO LT O F ENERGY ! ”
“ I RRE S I STABLE ! ”
“NEWS I E S F L I P S , S P I N S , AND DANCE S STRA I GHT INTO YOUR HEART !”
The Legacy is proud to be one of only 12 regional productions of “Newsies” following the conclusion of the national Broadway tour!
THE CHARACTERSJACK KELLY: Male, must appear to be age 17 – 22. Charismatic, passionate leader of the Manhattan Newsboys. An independent dreamer who yearns to get out of the crowded streets of New York and make a better life for himself out West. A street-smart kid with a dark artistic soul beneath the bravado. Not a blow-hard, this kid’s the real thing. Must have a strong pop tenor voice.
KATHERINE PLUMBER: Female, must appear to be age 17 – 22. The strong-willed daughter of Pulitzer exudes smarts, opinions and confidence. A reporter who wants to make a name for herself as a journalist in a time when women aren’t taken seriously. Must have a great pop/contemporary musical theater voice with a high belt.
DAVEY JACOBS: Male, must appear to be age 16 – 21. A thinker. Raised in a home as opposed to the other Newsies, he starts selling papers to help his struggling family. Davey is the book-smart counterpoint to street-smart Jack. The voice of reason, Davey is a leader in his own right. Strong contemporary tenor voice.
LES JACOBS: Male, must appear to be age 9-11. The fearless kid brother of Davey. Excited by everything the world has to offer and eager to join in the adventure. Fun is this kid’s middle name. Must sing really well.
CRUTCHIE: Male, age 17 – 22. A frail boy with a huge heart. He walks with the aid of a crutch due to a bad leg, but that doesn’t hold him back from being right in the middle of any mischief. A real charm-er with a twinkle in his eye.
JOSEPH PULITZER: Male, 40-50s. A businessman through and through, he owns The World newspaper, and is concerned only with the bottom line. An on-point, know-it-all politician. Impolite and impatient with the world. Strong singer.
MISS MEDDA LARKIN: Female, 40s – 60s. A saloon singer with a big voice and a bigger heart. The star of the Bowery Follies, she’s a big hit with the newsies – offering her theatre as a safe haven, and standing by them in their fight for justice. Risque, tough, great comic delivery.
SPOT CONLON: Male, must appear to be age 16-20. Leader of the Brooklyn Newsies, with a tough guy exterior, a soft heart and a wicked slingshot.
THE NEWSIES: Male, ages 14-20’s. Capable singers, strong dancers. Acrobatics a plus. Each Newsie will develop their own unique personality. These guys stop the show - several times - during every performance!
ALBERT, HENRY, MUSH, FINCH, ELMER , RACE, ROMEO, SPECS, BUTTONS, IKE, JOJO, MIKE, SNIPER, TOMMY BOY
MORRIS DELANCEY: Male, age 16-20’s. Scrappy and abusive tough guy, in charge of keeping peace at The World’s distribution window. Also Newsie.
OSCAR DELANCEY: Male, Morris’s equally tough brother, they take the side of the publishers in the strike and are known to use their firsts to make a point. Also Newsie.
HANNAH: Female, age 18-40’s. Pulitzer’s secretary.
THE BOWERY BEAUTIES: Female, age 18-30’s. Showgirls at Medda’s theater.
ADULT MALE ROLES, Singer-Actors (no dance)
These gents are doubling roles, and will have a lot of fun portraying the adult males that support and confound the Newsies. We will cast 4-6 men to cover the following characters:
WIESEL: Male, age 40-60. “Weasel” runs the distribution win-dow for The World and knows most of the newsboys by name. He has the help of the intimidating Delancey brothers, who keep order by any means necessary.
MR. JACOBI: Male, age 30-50. Owner of the deli.
MAYOR: Male, age 40-60. The Mayor of New York City.
NUNZIO: Male, age 40-60. A barber.
STAGE MANAGER: Male, age 30-60. A stage manager at Medda Larkin’s theater.
GOVERNOR TEDDY ROOSEVELT: Male, age 40-65. The current governor and future President.
SEITZ: Male, age 30-50. Pulitzer’s editor.
DARCY: Male, age 17-25. Upper-class son of a publisher.
BILL: Male, age 17-25. The son of William Randolph Hearst.
BUNSEN: Male, age 30-50. Pulitzer’s bookkeeper.
SNYDER: Male, age 40-60. Warden of The Refuge; a frightening, spidery, sinister man. He runs The Refuge, a ramshackle orphanage for homeless boys. He is concerned only with catching enough boys to keep his government checks coming.
ABOUT THE GIRLS:
The show is written to include only four parts for female perform-ers: Katherine, Medda, and the two Bowery Beauties, who double in other female roles. The question has been raised, will we cast female performers as Newsies. The answer is, “maybe.” If we can cast the roles with male performers, we will do that, however we are open to casting no more than two female Newsies. We welcome females interested in these roles to attend auditions. Females must appear to be age 16-20, and must be physically capable of portraying a boy.
Following are the vocal selections for the various characters. Performers may sing from the show, or a song of your choosing that highlights your vocal ability. Please consider the environment and only print the pages that you need. An accompanist will be provided.
