Chamber Perspective December is here and that means just 31 days left in 2019. How was your 2019? Have you started to set goals for 2020? We hope one of your goals will be more engagement with the Chamber so we can better serve you and the Business Community as a whole. As you will see in the following pages November had some very well attended events. The Holiday Inn Express was the place to be during the first snow of the season as our State Legislators provided a packed room with a preview of 2020. Folks are still talking about the meal provided by Thaitalian Infusion Cuisine. A great crowd turned out for the Business After Hours and Ribbon Cutting at Blue Ruin as they talked about their current success and plans for the future. The very cold weather did not stop the riders or spectators from showing up for the Positive Strides Ribbon Cutting to kick-off the Jaime Lee Hutchison Memorial Horse Show. We ended the month with a literally standing room only Business After Hours and Ribbon Cutting at Harriett's House. The turnout for the event was heartwarming and motivating. Normally things slow down a little in December but not in 2019. Visit our website for more details.
We will be at the Old Rescue Fire House on December 3rd to cut the Ribbon for the 85th Annual Train Garden.
On Thursday, December 5th we will be
at Pleasant Day for the 20th Annual Festival of Wreaths. The event is underway now with daily viewing, voting and bidding on the wreaths and will wrap up with a Business After Hours on the 5th. This is a must attend event each year.
We will be walking across the street on December 10th for a Business After Hours and Ribbon cutting for Blue Oyster. Come out to learn about the exciting things they are doing and to have an oyster or two.
Cambridge Market is having a Ribbon Cutting on Friday, December 13th. Come out to support them and to see all they have to offer—we believe you will be pleased.
The last Cruise Ship of 2019 will be here on the 29th.
We are well into the planning of the 2020 Chamber Annual Meeting. The event is set for Thursday, January 23rd and is being held at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort and Spa. The meeting is always well attended, and it is a great place to make new contacts, to renew old ones and learn what is happening in the County. The keynote this year will be delivered by the Secretary of the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), Kenneth C. Holt. Secretary Holt is a big fan of Dorchester County and has been to the area many times in recent months. Come learn about the investment DHCD is making in our area. In addition to the keynote, we will present the winner of the
2020 C. Robert “Bob” Spedden Award and introduce new Board Members and Officers for 2020. Work to get the 2020 Business and Community Resource Directory ready for printing is still in process. We need your help to get member information in our system as accurate as possible. There are lots of changes that happen throughout the year that do not make it to us. Please review your information by going to our Website www.dorchesterchamber.org and looking up your business. This is the first year we will be using Chamber Master to produce member sections of the Directory, so it is important that data is accurate. We still have room for advertisements in the Directory but we need to get the ad copy in house so we can get the layout complete. If you want to have an ad for 2020 please reach out to us immediately. The Directory is widely distributed, and this year’s focus is Health and Wellness in Dorchester County. We have several 2020 Corporate Sponsors already signed up but still have space for a few more. Please review the details about being a Corporate Sponsor on our website.

The Holiday Inn Express in Cambridge hosted our November Chamber Business lunch. The Legislative Preview was delivered by Senator Addie Eckardt, Delegate Christopher Adams, Delegate Johnny Mautz and a representative from Delegate Sheree Sample-Hughes' office. Each legislator received five questions ahead of time and spoke collectively to a full room about the Kirwan Commission and it’s impact on funding education, paid family medical leave and minimum wage, an additional span across the Bay, solar and wind energy, and high-speed internet/phone service. A Big Thank You to Doug Remmell and the Holiday Inn Express staff for opening up their space to us. Thank you to Thaitalian Infusion Cuisine (300B Washington Street) for an outstanding lunch.
Blue Ruin Bar held a Business After Hours and Ribbon Cutting on November 14. A large crowd gathered to celebrate the new business in their newly renovated building. Paul talked about the success they have had already and the planned expansion that will include a full kitchen and food menu in the near future.
They are masters of mixology and have already created a loyal following. They have also gotten engaged by holding fun events and helping the community with fundraisers. On November 16, Positive Strides invited the Dorchester and the Caroline County Chambers of Commerce for a Ribbon Cutting before their Jaime Lee Hutchison Memorial Horse Show. The event was held at Timber Grove Farm on Statum Road just outside of Harmony, MD. Positive Strides is a Therapeutic Riding facility that uses equine-assisted activities to build confidence, self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment for people with physical, cognitive and emotional needs. The riders and volunteers weathered very cold temperatures in a stiff wind to put on a great show.

On November 21, Harriett’s House held a Business After Hours and Ribbon Cutting event. Harriett’s House is a Drop-In Center for Women. Their mission is to combat Human Trafficking and to bring freedom and healing to women who have been sexually exploited. They offer free resources, referrals, computer access, food and drinks, toiletries, clothes, women can sign up for classes for job interviews and resume writing techniques, budgeting, parenting, etc. Case management will be provided for women that have been exploited.
Julie Crain spoke about her passion and how she has been working 11 years on this vision. She is looking to expand into a residential facility in the future. Volunteers are needed and the donation of toiletries, food and clothes are welcome. Nearly 150 Next Generation Scholars Participated in National Association for College Admission Counseling’s (NACAC) National
College Fair in Baltimore City Eleventh grade students represented Allegany, Caroline, Dorchester, Kent
and Wicomico Counties
Nearly 150 eleventh grade students from Maryland Business Roundtable for Education’s
(MBRT) Next Generation Scholars program participated in Baltimore’s National College Fair, sponsored by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) at the Baltimore Convention Center on Tuesday, October 22, 2019. The fair afforded students an opportunity to connect one-on-one with college admission representatives from hundreds of postsecondary institutions. While attending the event, MBRT encouraged Next Generation Scholars to visit a minimum of eight booths and ask a minimum of five questions at each booth so that they could make more informed decisions about college selection and career readiness.
“This is a terrific opportunity for our students to speak with admissions professionals and ask important questions that help them learn more about the process and guide them as they progress toward high school graduation,” said Brian Dulay, executive director of MBRT. “The students, who are now juniors, are members of the Next Generation Scholars program inaugural class. It’s great to see them engage in opportunities like these as they prepare for their future.”
In addition to attending the college fair, students from Wicomico County visited Coppin State University while in Baltimore. Students toured the campus and met with students, staff and college leadership to learn more about college life and opportunities that exist should they attend the public historic black university (HBCU).
This college fair visit is a new component for the Next Generation Scholars program, which began in the
fall of 2017. Since inception, MBRT has held External Learning Experiences at nine colleges around the state. In addition, they also hosted students from Allegany, Caroline, Dorchester, Kent and Wicomico Counties at Discovery Fest 2019 at the Aberdeen Proving Ground where students were exposed to more than 50 colleges and businesses as well as military offerings. For more than 25 years, MBRT has been connecting the business community with local schools through its Maryland Scholars Speakers Bureau and STEM Specialists in the Classroom programs. In 2017, MBRT added the Next Generation Scholars program, which provides funding through the Howard P. Rawlings Maryland Guaranteed Access Grant, administered by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), to enhance education and career awareness as well as college completion for high school students with a demonstrated financial need. The Guaranteed Access Grant provides an award that will help cover the cost of full-time study at a Maryland college or university for low-income families.
MBRT currently serves nearly 2,000 students in six high schools across five counties. The organization is one of several that partner with leadership and school counselors at select schools
throughout the state to provide grade-specific services to ensure that students who are part of Next Generation Scholars graduate ready for their next steps in college, career and life. MBRT coordinators help students and parents understand that college is an option for everyone while bridging the knowledge gap that exists for many families about college and their chosen career paths.

Alan S. Bishop, O.D. recognized by Maryland Optometric Association
Dr. Alan S. Bishop received the Melvin Waxman Award at the largest annual convention in the history of the Maryland Optometric
Association (MOA). The awards were presented during the conference held at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor. The Melvin Waxman Award was presented in recognition of his dedicated and loyal service to the optometric profession.
After six years of tireless advocacy, MOA efforts paid off with the passage of a scope expansion bill during the 2019 Session of the Maryland General Assembly. Dr. Bishop testified in front of the Maryland Legislature on 5 occasions in support of a scope of care expansion bill that brings Maryland optometry's prescription authority up to par with the rest of the country. He states, “The recent passage will improve access to quality eye care, save on health care costs and prevent delayed care for all Marylanders."
