A word of introduction:

My name is Jill Hershberger and I am the new Spiritual Growth leader for the Kansas City District. I am a wife, mother of three, plus two, adult children, grandmother of two, retired Math Teacher, a member of University UMC and a child of God. I like to remind myself of being “a child of God”, because just as a child is gaining new knowledge and learning new skills daily I am growing in my faith daily. I look forward to getting to know my sisters in Christ as we work together to grow in faith and understanding of how we can spread God’s love and peace. Please pray for me and all our sisters as I will be praying for you. I can be contacted at [email protected] .

Greetings! My name is Susan Cockrum and my office is

Membership, Nurture and Outreach. Monticello UMC in Shawnee is my church and also where I teach Preschool. I'm married and the mother of two grown children. Thinking about my new position trees came to mind. I love trees and often take my inspiration from trees when walking or gazing out the window. I've been thinking they are wonderful examples of how we can grow our membership. We receive God's love and branch out into the world wanting to share Gods love. One of the best ways to branch out is to ask someone to do some-thing. You might be surprised how many woman are just wait-ing to be asked to share their God given gifts and become a new branch. So my hope is that we find ways to branch out and grow in 2016! Thanks Susan

Dear UMW

Thank you for your kind invitation to present at the recent district meeting. It was a wonderful

opportunity to shed light on our work with artisans in Haiti.

What a wonderful surprise to receive your donation. We feel so blessed to be able to improve the work conditions of the women and your contribution will go towards our lighting project!

South Central Jurisdiction Quadrennial Meeting

April 15-17, 2016 should be in your memory by now. These are important days for South Central Juris-diction United Methodist Women. Your leadership team has worked non-stop to plan and put together what we feel will be a life changing experience for you. The main purpose for our Quadrennial Meeting is to elect directors for our National UMW Organization. Elections will take place on Saturday morning. But as United Methodist Women, when we get together, we know how to CELEBRATE, EDUCATE and PARTY in the name of Jesus. This is exactly what we are go-ing to do. Here are a few of the things that you can expect to take place. Our Bible Study Leader, Reverend Janet Wolf is a powerful woman of God and we know we will be touched in a mighty way by what she will share with us from God on “A Fresh Wind Blowing” that will im-pact our lives for many years to come. She is known for her advocacy for people who are poor and pushed to margins of society. She will minister to us on Saturday morning during Bible Study. Our Music will be stimu-lating and rewarding as we will be led by Marcus Briggs Cloud, a Native American from the Maskoke Nation. Marcus served as the choir conductor and composer in Rome, Italy for 2012 Vatican Canonization Liturgy of the first Native American Catholic Saint, Kateri Tekakwitha. We will sing old familiar songs and new songs that will inspire and enlighten us.

Rev. Constance Saizon, pastor of St. Landry and Hughes United Methodist Churches in Gonzales and Baton Rouge, Louisiana will serve as our Banquet Speaker on Saturday Evening. Formerly the pastor in New Orle-ans, she arrived in Baton Rouge after Katrina. God heightened Rev. Saizon’s spiritual gift of humor to serve as a coping mechanism. So out of the disaster of Katrina, came a Christian comedy ministry. Get ready to laugh your head off!

The 2016 METour is happening!!! The 2016 METour Director is Debra Rukes

Some of the 2016 destinations… We will tour missions in Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado.

What is the Mission Education Tour (METour)? The Mission Education Tour or METour is a eight-day mission experience for young women sponsored by

the Great Plains United Methodist Women. METour participants have the opportunity to engage in mission,

learn about United Methodist Women and experience the United Methodist connection by visiting and

working at National Mission Institutions, Volunteer in Mission sites and United Methodist-related agencies.

It's so much more than a mission trip!

METour is open to young women in the Great Plains Annual Conference ages 15-22. Local UMW organi-

zations have the opportunity to sponsor and support young women on the tour. Cost for the experience is

$400 per person.

For more information about the METour please contact the METour director

at [email protected].

READING PROGRAM 2016

I am sure that when you begin reading books from the 2016 Reading List, you will find some titles that will enhance your knowledge and understanding of the world, AND some books that may take you out of your comfort zone. I hope you will enjoy this journey as you meet people and go places you never imagined. More books are being published digi-tally for e-readers, computers, etc. Whichever device you use to read, you may find it easier and less expensive to ac-cess books electronically. The Resource Center will continue to provide paper copies as long as they are available. (Portions of the above paragraph are taken and paraphrased from the 2016 Reading Program Catalog.)

Also available for check-out are books from the Great Plains UMW Conference Library by calling Mary Ann Bede at 402-421-8264 or email at [email protected]. Another option is your local library. Or, you may swap books with another unit. My hope is that you find these books, read them and share them with others.

As always the guidelines of the four Reading Program plans are as follows:

PLAN I - One book from each of the 5 categories (Education for Mission, Leadership Development, Nurturing for Community, Social Action and Spiritual Growth). Selections may be from 2011-2016 including Youth titles if not previously reported. Regular reading of Response Magazine.

PLAN II - Two books from each of the five categories listed above. Selections from 2011-2016, including Youth Titles if not previously reported, and regular reading of Response Magazine, and New World Outlook.

PLAN III – Two books from each of the five categories listed above. Plus five additional books from any cate-gory of the selections from 2011-2016 including Youth and Children titles if not previously reported, and regular read-ing of Response Magazine and New World Outlook.

PLAN IV – Two books from each of the five categories listed above. Plus 10 additional books from any catego-ry of the selections from 2011-2016 including Youth and Children titles, and the regular reading of Response Magazine and New World Outlook.

Thanks in advance for being a part of our great Reading Program,

PAGE 5 THE CHALLENGER , JANUARY 2016

Reflections on LEAF – The UMW Legislative Day held February 8-9, 2015 I’d never been to LEAF before. In fact I didn’t even know what LEAF was. I took a day off of

work and got a ride with a seasoned LEAF voyager, Margee Castle, and off we went! We arrived at

the First United Methodist Church in Topeka to friendly UMW ladies and a delicious continental

breakfast. There were ladies from all over the state. Margee soon found old friends and got caught

up on their lives. We gathered for worship followed by the keynote speaker, Rabbi Moti Rieber, who

talked about climate change and how we as a faith based people can become better stewards of our

world and the people whose lives this climate change has affected. The second part of the morning

presentations included Duane Goosen who talked about what was going on regarding the Kansas

budget; Maryanna Quilty (who was with the League of Women Voters) talked on voter rights and the

current requirement to show an id to prove citizenship; Larry Weigel (he’s called the Medicare

coach) who talked on Medicare and the new health insurance initiatives; and lastly Sister Therese

Bangert. This little dynamic nun is frequently present at the Capital in Topeka advocating for immi-

gration and human rights. You legislators better watch out for her! After a box lunch we were able

to attend two workshops. I attended a workshop about “Women for Kansas.” This is a political

group that was started in 2013 to organize women with similar beliefs and goals to make a better

Kansas. The second workshop I attended was on the conference Disaster Relief food trailers. Rose

Roberts is the coordinator of these trailers that are sent off to areas in Kansas and Nebraska needing

help. She had some tales to tell about her experiences! All and all this was a wonderful experience

and I encourage you to attend the next LEAF session and become more knowledgeable about issues

before our legislature. You’ll also get in some great fellowship with the Topeka UMW ladies and

ladies from around the state! Try it – I think you’ll like it! Deanna Delladio, KC District secretary

Place Faith.Hope.Love In Action By Attending A Legislative Day

The Great Plains United Methodist Women participates in two legislative days that educates and engages members of the faith community on issues that are being addressed within the state legislatures. The purpose of the legisla-tive days is to provide a forum of education on social justice issues, create a context for how the issues intersect with faith and prompt ways that the faith community can respond in advocacy. Great Plains United Methodist Women are encouraged to use the legislative days as platforms to learn more about issues on the local and state levels and identify ways to add a voice as a faith community. Both events are ecumenical and open to all. A variety of workshops are available at both Legislative Days. Topics include climate change, education, human trafficking and food security. The Legacy Fund -- Celebrate 150 Years of United Methodist Women!! United Methodist Women has a rich legacy as a mission movement since 1869 when the ladies of our predecessor organization, the Women's Foreign Missionary Society, first met. As we look to the future, we want to ensure we can continue our mission on behalf of women, children and youth in communities down the street and around the world. So, the Legacy Fund is established as an endowment to support this mission. Gifts to the Legacy Fund will lay the foundation for future generations of United Meth-odist Women. While donations will be accepted in any amount, a suggested amount is $18.69 or some multiple of that fig-ure in remembrance of the year 1869. The goal is for every member of United Methodist Women to make a gift to the Leg-acy Fund of at least $18.69 per year for five years (2015-2019). This would be mission giving in addition to the member's normal pledge to mission. Contributions to this fund may be donated (1) directly to UMW at www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/150 or (2) through your local unit treasurer by providing the following information to your unit treasurer: Donor's name and address (UMW National wants to send thank-you notes) UMW office held (if any) by donor Amount of the gift Whether or not the gift is (a) In Honor of . . . (b) In Memory of . . . (c) no designation Note to Unit Treasurers: Please enter this gift under line 7, "Supplementary Gifts," on the remittance form. Under "Name of Project," please write "The Legacy Fund, Project #3001147." Write all the additional information either on the front or back of the remittance form.

2016 UMW DISTRICT SISTER LIST

The District Sister and Prayer Partner Program provides an opportunity for each unit to

have a contact person on the Kansas City District Leadership team as well as someone

who remembers them in prayer. The purpose is to build relationships that will enhance

the work we all do together. The program is one of the ways we “develop a creative,

supportive fellowship”. Each "district sister and prayer partner" is encouraged to contact

her units and to offer encouragement and support. Each unit is encouraged to contact

its "district sister and prayer partner" to invite her to attend a meeting(s), a special

event, anything that might be of interest or help.

Happy New Year! I hope your 2016 is off to a great start.

Please mark your calendar for our Spring meeting, scheduled for April 2, 2016 at Leawood UMC. A registration form is included in this newsletter on Page 11. I hope you will be able to attend! I am excited to announce that our speakers will be Steve and Jennifer Wickham. They are missionaries affiliated with and members of Leawood UMC and for the past four years served in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Africa, at a K-12 international Christian school called Haven of Peace (HOPAC). While serving at HOPAC, they were also able to minister to the local community through the Sala Sala Kidz Klub, a ministry that focuses on using sports and storytelling to reach out to over 300 children who live in an abandoned stone quarry that sits right behind the school. These children come from families that usually make less than $2 a day. The church also supports a feeding program to benefit this community. Our in-gathering will support Cross-Lines, located in Kansas City, Kansas. Their mission is to provide basic services and opportu-nities that encourage self-confidence and self-sufficiency to people affected by poverty. Their diverse emergency assistance pro-grams offer laundry services, shower facilities, clean clothing, and rent and utility assistance. They serve breakfast and lunch five days a week, and also offer a bag of groceries to an average of 1200 qualifying families each month. Their Thrift Store is another valued community resource where individuals and families can purchase quality household items at a low cost. The community garden is a recent addition. Garden produce is sold for $1 per pound, given away to food pantry users, and used in their kitchen. Please refer to the registration form for more information about the items we will be collecting for them. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended our Fall 2015 meeting, officer training, and mission fair at Aldersgate UMC in Olathe, with a special thanks to the Aldersgate unit for doing such a great job hosting the meeting. Our speak-ers, Barb Reinke (Haitian Artisans for Peace International), Holly Heyroth Opundo (Angel House International, Tanzania, Africa) and Teresa Tuchscherer (Ministry to Incarcerated Families) were so inspirational. We were so blessed by your outpouring of sup-port for the in-gathering for the Incarcerated Families. This was our first mission fair, and the participation was excellent! I have included below a recap of the mission fair information for your reference. Please let me know if you would like contact infor-mation for any of these projects.

We had a good turnout for the officer training, and since so many ideas were shared, I have an updated meeting idea list to distribute. I will be sending that out soon to all unit VPs in the district. In the meantime, please let me know if I can assist you in any way with your meeting planning.
