• Informative texts have elements that can help you find the central idea.– Titles– Headings/subheadings– A person’s actions and words– Connotations of words (how the word makes you

• Is it clearly communicated with supporting details? If not, it is not truly a message we should take away.

Summarizing“And that’s how it all ties together”

• Our goal: summarize the article, including 2 central ideas and their supporting details.

• So far, we have only been looking at 1 central idea at a time.– HOW DO WE COMBINE THEM?

Summarizing is NOT Retelling

• Retelling= listing all the ideas exactly how they are organized in the article

• Summarizing= grouping similar ideas together to make it easier for people to understand the information.

Summaries Are:• objective- they do not contain your opinion• similar ideas which are grouped together• statements that do not contain specific details
