The Center for Creative Chaos staff spoke to those gathered on the mission of the Center, and screened excerpts from videos produced to portray the reality of homelessness. WHO ARE WE?

We noticed the media never shows the realities of homelessness. The “news” usually shows homeless camps being bulldozed by the city or as a problem for a neighborhood. One never sees the very clean and ordered camps that exist.

An image of homelessness has been created that presents folks with backpacks hung with water bottles and wearing tacky clothing, or panhandling on the corners. The media doesn’t show the well dressed individuals that blend into mainstream America, or the families that used to be your next door neighbors, struggling with homelessness.

During Katrina the government didn’t acknowledge that the poor lacked the means to leave before the storm hit. Those with the least suffered the most. Their plight was minimized because they don ’t have money or political power, and this news does not sell.

This media driven image, of the homeless and poor being a worthless part of our consumer society, perpetuates the brutalization of this population.

The Center for Creative Chaos is out to change this image. We feel everyone deserves equal representation in our society.
