With the cooler weather upon us there is nothing better than snuggling up with a good book or 20.

Recently the Premier and the Education Minister launched the 2014 Premiers Reading Challenge. This is an opportunity for Queensland kids to discover the joy of reading.

Following the Queensland Government’s January announcement of the $131 million Great Results Guarantee, many schools chose to utilise their funding to promote reading.

I encourage all students to share in their love of reading with parents and siblings and register for the 2014 Challenge.

Last year, more than 735 schools including our local schools and 118,500 students participated in the challenge with more than 84,000 students successfully completing the challenge and reading more than 1.7 million books.

We would love to see these figures increase and the benefits are not only spending quality time together but also an improvement in our student’s literacy skills.

To meet the challenge in 2014 students must read and record all the books they’ve read between 20 May and 5 September and lodge them by 12 September. Their achievements will be celebrated between 10 November and 21 November.

Students who meet the challenge will receive a certificate signed by the Premier.

How much time do you spend on social media sites? Facebook, twitter and pinterest are fast replacing many hobbies and becoming our default when it comes to down time.

I recently listened to a talk that gave some frightening statistics regarding our usage of social media and what it’s doing to our brains. It seems that part of our brain shuts down when we are using these social media sites, in order for our brain to cope with the barrage of information coming in. And when part of our brain is shut down, we become unattentive to those around us. Essentially, said the speaker, we become numb.

Apparently, the worst offender of overuse of social media is my age group (which is the 40-somethings, in case you were wondering!). And the tables have, if not completely turned, at least tilted with teenagers being the ones complaining of their parents seeming addiction to their devices and wishing their mum or dad would spend less time on their phones/tablets.

The thing I find interesting is that I’m noticing a real trend among my friend circle towards lessening the usage of social media. There is the, now well known, trick of everyone piling their phones in the middle of the table when out for dinner and the first to reach for their phone picks up the bill for the whole table. Families are placing a basket inside the front door in which each family member deposits their device when they come home - and that’s where the device stays for the whole evening.

We need to get back to real connection. And I think the tide is starting to turn. We were all charmed by facebook, looking up old school friends and past work colleagues, but I wonder if we’re not all becoming a little jaded and have figured out that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

Recognising that really being present with people in person is far better than ‘liking’ someone’s status on facebook and having a pseudo relationship and is a big step in the right direction.

I’m loving the fact that my friends and I are all realising this at the same time. I recently went away for a night with three friends. The only time a phone came out was to take a photo and we sat and talked for roughly six hours! And the best part was that not one of us felt the need to broadcast our exact movements to the whole of facebook!

Despite what the people who make money from social media would have us believe, we can survive without the internet. More than that, we can thrive!

I’m excited to notice this hint of disconnecting from our devices and really truly connecting with those around us.

Local residents are invited to attend an entertaining and informative morning in the bushland overlooking the Brisbane River at Westlake and Riverhills on Sunday 1 June from 9.30am - noon.

The Nature Morning beside the Brisbane River will be hosted by Centenary and District Environment Action Inc. (CDEA), Wolston and Centenary Catchments Inc. (WaCC) and Brisbane City Council’s Habitat Brisbane.

Featuring a Geckoes Wildlife Presentation with live Australian wildlife to look at, touch and learn about, participants can also enjoy a riverside walk along the Coucal Trail, either guided or independently. There will also be the opportunity to fossick for fungi with Megan on the Fungi Walk and members of the relevant groups will be on hand for people to find out about our local Bushcare and Environmental Groups.

There is no charge for the morning, which is funded by the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund and will include morning tea for all to enjoy.

The Nature Morning will be held in the Bushland Reserve, next to the Big Fig on the corner of Tennent Street and Westlake Drive, off Horizon Drive, Westlake. Residents are encouraged to bring the whole family and their own chair or rug for the wildlife presentation.

Have you ever wondered what happened to that poor stray dog you saw walking across the road? Or the stray cat that ran under the car? South East Queensland Animal Rescue is what happens, stepping in to support animals.

Based in Brisbane, this non-profit rescue group has taken in and rehomed more than 730 animals since opening its doors in March of 2012.

After discovering a litter of underweight and neglected puppies in a bin near her previous workplace, Tam Davis knew she needed to help animals and took on the huge task of founding and running South East Queensland Animal Rescue with the goal to save as many lives as possible. Now she needs your help!

Taking in all kinds of animals from cats to dogs to chickens and even peacocks, staff at South East Queensland Animal Rescue have had an unusually busy summer. For non profit rescue groups who rely purely on donations from the public, this can cause a strain and unfortunately result in animals who are in need of new homes being turned away simply because the animal rescue group can’t afford to feed them or don’t have anywhere to house them.

South East Queensland Animal Rescue are asking residents for a small donation to assist them in taking in and rehoming even more animals over the coming winter. Donations can include linen, food, animal bedding, bowls and various other animal products.

Exploring the past in the Centenary suburbs – part 5

Members of the Centenary Suburbs History Society hope that you are enjoying learning about the local history of our suburbs. Another very enjoyable and scenic local walk is along the Coucal Trail which follows the Brisbane river bank starting at the end of Balaton Street and emerging at a reserve on Westlake Drive.

The track was completed as part of the Green Corps Project by young adults in 1999. The Westlake-Riverhills Bushcare Group keeps the track clear, encourages native plants and try to limit weeds! This group is part of the bigger Centenary and District Environment Action (CDEA) group, a community environmental group which focuses on protection of the natural environment, public parkland and recreational areas, and the mitigation of urban development impacts in the Centenary suburbs and neighbouring districts. A respected local community voice since 1996.

The historical significance of the area dates back to the original Aboriginal people of the area who would probably have used the small natural cave up on the high side of the track. There is also evidence of sandstone quarrying along the track considered to have been a small quarry on Wolston Estate in the latter part of 19th century. Drill holes created for blasting can be seen in the rock face, as well as other signs of quarrying. These holes could have been hand drilled, before the advent of machinery, a laborious process. The smooth, round surface of the holes was made by rotating the hand held drilling tool after each blow with a hammer. Oral history, handed down in the Maurer family, holds that the stone from this area was used by Matthew Goggs in building his mausoleum in 1871. The stone would have been taken by river to Wolston.

Walking along by the river, which may have water skiers or early morning rowers enjoying its expanse, you may hear the hollow call of the pheasant-like bird, the Coucal. Back in the 1850s you would have seen steam boats plying their trade from Brisbane to Ipswich. The tides played havoc with shipping and navigation was difficult with shallow areas, floating logs, debris. Floods delayed services and there is an amusing account of one of the river steamers grounding on piles of bones near the Ipswich Boiling Down Works. Cattle and sheep carcasses were boiled down to produce tallow used in the making of soap and candles. The residue dumped at the river’s edge also attracted sharks from the river mouth, a danger to would be bathers!

Belonging to a community of like-minded people who share common values is very important for children and their families in today’s fast paced world. Such a community helps to provide the stability needed to focus on the things that really matter.

The month of May is a time when our College families come together as a community at events, which celebrate the values for which we stand. Our annual Mother’s Day High Tea, on 10 May, not only allowed our Hospitality students the opportunity to showcase their catering skills but also over 200 Mum’s gathered and enjoyed hearing a presentation from Kim McCosker of the cookbook series “4 Ingredients”. In spite of the threatening weather all enjoyed catching up with friends and family and the warmth of community.

Our very successful College Carnival on 17 May bought together St John’s families and many people from the surrounding suburbs. Students, Mums and Dad’s, Old Collegians and College supporters enjoyed the stalls, displays and performances. We are very grateful for the efforts of the Carnival convenors and all who gave their time, expertise and donations. We would like to acknowledge our major sponsor for the College Carnival, Heritage Bank Forest Lake.

The Music came to Forest Lake on 28 May when our partner schools, Kinross Wolaroi School – NSW, Radford College – ACT, Scotch College – SA and St Leonard’s College - Vic, came together for the Combined School Music Festival. Around 200 students and teachers participated in workshops led by national and international performers including Mr Peter Ingram, Head of Music at BGS, Dr Ralph Hultgren most recently Head of the Open Conservatorium, Griffith University, Mr Barrie Gott, state examiner for AMEB and Mr Andy Firth, one of the most outstanding clarinet players in the world today. Performance groups workshopped and rehearsed throughout the three days, their efforts culminating in a wonderful Gala Concert in the College Auditorium. Congratulations to all involved on such a fine standard of musicianship on display.

Being connected to one another builds the foundations for trust, confidence and success in whatever we undertake in life. The St John’s community has

experienced this in May and is the richer for it.

The Anzac Centenary Local Grants ProgramI am happy to announce that the first Anzac Centenary Local Grant for Oxley has been

approved. The Centenary Suburbs RSL Sub-branch has been approved for $45,000 to go towards a statue of Simpson and his Donkey at the Centenary Suburbs War Memorial Gardens. The gardens are used for the Anzac Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies and feature Memorial walls with plaques for deceased Centenary Suburbs service members and memorial headstones for the appropriate services.

The Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program is a key element in the Australian Government’s Anzac Centenary program through which funding of up to $125,000 is available for each federal electorate to support projects commemorating the First World War.

I have received five other applications through my office which are currently being processed. This is great news for the Centenary Suburbs and the surrounding communities and I congratulate Vice-President Arnold Andrew on receiving this grant.

Mount Ommaney MP, Tarnya Smith recently launched the myPolice Centenary Blog in Mount Ommaney which will help police keep the community safe by boosting interaction between Centenary police and the public.

“Police officers are only as good as the information they receive and these blogs provide a way for police and the community to interact 24 hours a day,” Mrs Smith said.

“Through the blog, police officers are able to share crime prevention tips, personal safety tips, how to keep property secure and show comfit images or stills from CCTV.

“Providing up-to-date information will empower the people of the Mount Ommaney Electorate and increase their willingness to report information to police, Crime Stoppers or Police Link.

“In the event of a disaster, the blog will also provide crucial information for residents and visitors including updates on road closures, and weather conditions.”

myPolice Centenary will feature an online reporting function, interactive crime mapping and statistics as well as a CCTV gallery highlighting people of interest at a local level.

The Jindalee State School Fete is on in August, and organisers are now taking sponsorship and booking stallholders for the popular event.

Last year, the fete attracted over 2500 visitors, with more expected this year, and will again boast carnival rides and school run stalls as well as community stalls.

The theme for this year is I love a sunburnt country and local businesses are encouraged to either sponsor or book a stall. Sponsors will this year benefit from professional promotion and marketing by Who Dunnit Graphic Design.

Bowls Club, 9.30am on the first Tuesday each month, either as a new Member or visitor and become acquainted with 90+ members who attend? Did you know that we have 18 members on the Committee and two more on a sub- committee? This is how many people are needed to run our very busy Branch program of social events each month.

We start with a delicious morning tea, a short meeting, followed by our guest speaker who, this month, is Mr David Gibson OAM. He is going to speak about the colonisation of Queensland, and this month we are celebrating Queensland Day with a sausage sizzle for lunch afterwards. Now, isn’t that tempting?

Our Coach Trip to Montville last month was enjoyed by all and our ‘Go Card’ Explorer trip for June will be to Boggo Road Gaol. These alternate trips are very popular and we always have a good attendance.

Our ‘Steady Musical Steppers’ increase in numbers at the Middle Park Uniting Church Hall each Monday Morning at 9am, also our Zumba classes are held at the same venue every Wednesday morning at 9.15am. These two classes are open to the public, so you can just turn up and join in. Members enjoy playing MahJong at the Mt Ommaney Library on the first and second Thursdays each month at 9 – noon. We don’t scare anyone and are willing to teach new members, and don’t forget our Jindalee Book Club for Seniors who meet on the third Thursday of each month – May to October, 10am to noon to discuss the chosen book to read.

Members keep in touch through our morning teas, evening dinners, concerts and plays, and we invite suggestions for any other activities. Our branch is a great way to meet like-minded members, enjoy social outings, and with our guest speakers, have a say on the issues affecting you. The annual membership for a single person is $40 and $50 for a couple, which is less than a cup of coffee a week.

Activities include casual coffee and chat mornings, bus trips and outings, monthly bridge and choir along with monthly lunch meetings which include book and trading tables. The last club outing was to Lutece Bistro where members enjoyed fine French cuisine and pleasant views of the surrounding area from the high vantage point.
