  • Notes Title: The Cell Theory (pg. 11)At top of page write the 3 Cell Theory postulates and box them.

List the following scientists, skipping 3-4 lines between each and take notes on each scientists.

    1. Hooke

    2. Leeuwenhoek

    3. Schleiden

    4. Schwann

    5. Virchow

    1. All living things have cells

    2. Cells come from other cells

    3. Cells are the basic unit of life

  • The Discovery of the Cell

    Robert Hooke

    • looked at thin slices of cork

    (plant cells) under the

    microscope.

    • Named it a cell1665

  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek – late 1600’s

    He was the first to:

    1. See and describe microorganisms

    ( bacteria, 1-celled creatures)

    under the microscope.

    2. He observed microorganisms in a

    drop of pond water, dental

    scrapings, etc.

    Leeuwenhoek made many simple microscopes

  • On the road to the cell theory...Matthias Schleiden Theodore Schwann

    German botanist

Schleiden said that all plants are made of cells.

    Zoologist

Schwann said that all animals are

    made of cells.

    1838 1839

Together they created postulate that “A cells come from other cells.”

  • Virchow

In 1858, Rudolph Virchow said that cells could only arise

    from preexisting cells.

  • 1. All living things have cells

Look at the pictures and notice the living organisms all have a cell structure, while the

none living organism do not have a cell structure.

  • 3. Cells are the basic unit of life

    No level smaller than

the level of cell is considered

    alive.

    • Organisms

The pictures to the right are organelles or parts of the cell. These organelles are

not considered alive because they are considered a

smaller level of organization than the cell.

  • The Cell Theory1. All living things are composed of

    cells.

    2. Cells are the basic units of living

    things.

    3. New cells are produced from

    existing cells.
