The Church Responds

“He Giveth More Grace”

He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater; He sendeth more strength when the labors increase.

To added affliction He addeth His mercy; To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace.

(Refrain)

His love has no limit; His grace has no measure; His pow’r has no boundary known unto men.

For out of His infinite riches in Jesus, He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again.

When we have exhausted our store of endurance, When our strength has failed ere the day is half done,

When we reach the end of our hoarded resources, Our Father’s full giving is only begun.

(Refrain)

Today we affirm the presence of God in worship: "Then Jesus declared, 'I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry.'"

Beginning on September 13, three interesting and challenging Bible studies will be offered weekly on Wednesday evenings starting at 4:30 PM. Make your plans to participate!

Encounter Jesus, led by Rev Len Walker is an eight-week Bible study and video series that teaches and encourages you to walk with THE Jesus of the Bible and not just the Jesus you want him to be. In this study, we explore eight passages from across the four gospels, each highlighting a key facet of Jesus life and work. The video sessions are 30 minutes each and offer daily study and faith exercises. (This study begins September 13 and meets weekly thereafter.

Jesus in the Gospels, led by Rev Lamar Helms is a second generation Dis-ciple Bible Study which focuses on Jesus in the four Gospels, and how and why the synoptic Gospels Matthew, Mark, and Luke sometime treat the sto-ries of Jesus differently. The study will focus on several of Jesus teaching parables. We will focus on how the Gospel writer identifies with his audience to share the Gospel most effectively. (This study begins September 13 and meets weekly thereafter.

Discussion Group, led by Dr. Harry Lucenay, considers how we live in a world with similarities but very different from the world of the biblical writ-ers. We tend to confront biblical realities with our own cultural assumptions. As a result, we are tempted to make the Bible say what we think it should say, rather than what the writers intended to communicate. The study will use the text, Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes: Removing Cultural Blind-ers to Better Understand the Bible, authored by E. Randolph Richards and Brandon J. O’Brien, will be the basis for discussions. (Discussion Group begins meeting on September 20 and meets weekly thereafter.

Michelangelo’s Pieta is one of the greatest works of art ever known to man. This magnificent sculpture is kept in Rome at St. Peter’s basilica. Many of you have probably seen it. I saw it when I was 15 years old. It was on display at the World’s Fair. I’m not sure I had the right depth of appreciation for it then. All I wanted to do was to get to Yankee Stadium to see a ball game. I can assure you I appreciated that!

Today when I look upon the pieta, my attention is con-sumed by the depth of Christ’s suffering. Philippians 2:8 should cause all of us to meditate upon the magnitude of the sacrifice of our Savior. It says, “And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death on a cross.” Often we sing, “Amazing love, how can it be, that thou my God should die for me!”

But as I contemplate the suffering and death of Christ de-picted by the pieta, I also notice Mary. How could you miss her? Can you imagine the depth of her grief? She had witnessed such a vile act of cruelty! Her spirit had to be crushed. Her suf-fering plunged her into the deepest despair.

Today I will bring a message entitled, “What About Suffer-ing?” To one degree or another, we all know the pain of suffer-ing. We’ll spend several Sundays on this subject. We’ll also fo-cus upon the hope we have in the midst of suffering.

This morning we announce how Big Canoe Chapel is re-sponding to the suffering experienced by those in the path of Hurricane Harvey. The Men’s Fellowship and the missions committee have already committed significant monetary re-sources. All checks coming to the Chapel and marked Hurri-cane relief will be sent to Texas Baptist Men for distribution. Thank you for your prayerful consideration.

Peace and grace,

Len
