The role of the Chief Communications Officer is dramatically evolving and is often quite different from company to company. To help advance the

role of the CCO, the CCO Council was created in partnership with Columbia Business School’s Center on Global Leadership to build the first executive network consisting of communications leaders from top companies, major government agencies, and the non-profit world.

The fourth event of the CCO Council is the “Discussions Around Leadership” Summit. Focusing on leadership topics specific to communications execu-tives, this one-day conference implements a core education methodology focused on small group scenario work, peer-to-peer learning and exposing the CCOs to the best communications scholars and latest information.

Dear CCOs,

Thank you all for taking part in our fourth Chief Communications Officer Council event, “Discussions Around Leadership.” We look forward to hosting you for an enlightening day of discussion and peer-to-peer learning.

Leadership today looks very different from what it looked like even a decade ago. As societal and technological advances empower more and more individuals and lead to seeing value in decentralized systems, it has become more important than ever for organizations to have a clear definition of what leadership means for their particular organization. In addition, economic, technology, and media consumption changes are altering the methods and norms around which businesses, society, and government leaders interact and connect with their stakeholders.

Over the course of the day, we will explore many aspects of leadership as it relates to brands, communications, and organizations as a whole. In a fireside chat, we will converse with Lew Frankfort ’69, Chairman Emeritus of Coach, whose leadership helped transform the once-cottage industry manufacturer of leather goods into a premier American accessories brand with a global presence. Our colleagues at Morning Consult will dive into the latest consumer attitudes and perceptions around leading brands. There will also be sessions examining public trust and leadership and strategic leadership in a time of increased uncertainty. Finally, we will leverage you—our diverse peer network of communications leaders—to discuss best practices and challenges in building an effective team and driving communications leadership within the organization.

Needless to say, a single day of discussion on these issues represents only a starting point. Our continuing aim for the CCO Council is to establish a growing community of CCOs that will come together to share knowledge with each other—and among other experts—to help each other best navigate the changes of the future to continue to build strong brands and develop as leaders. We look forward to hearing about your challenges and hopes as we further develop programming for the CCO Council, working in partnership with you.

We will be planning our next summit for the November 4, 2019, and we look forward to staying in touch during the course of the next year and hosting you again—in both in-person formats as well as through conference calls—to examine specific content areas.

Sincerely,
