Although I personally findlife busier than I could possibly imagine during the summer, I try and remind myself whatbrought me back to Muskoka. Whether you’re buying a lot to build on, or looking at an existing structure, it’s enormously useful to work with a Realtor who can see a property’s possibilities.

“It’s surprising how quickly you can get stuck when you’re walking a vacant lot,” says Megan McLeod of Cayman Marshall. “You find yourself picturing a cottage on one part of the property, and completely miss some of the other possibilities on the lot. It isn’t easy to picture how a lot will look when a couple of trees are taken down, or if the grade is altered. That’s part of my job: to help clients see beyond what’s right in front of them.”

Having a solid knowledge of permit requirements and municipal bylaws is also essential, she notes. After all, there’s no point in dreaming of a new home or cottage if the municipality won’t allow it to be built.

It also helps to have a Realtor who can direct you toward building partners. “I do a lot of work with Bruce Fitter of South Mary Lake Contracting as well as Craig Brenn, and I often recommend them to my clients,” says Megan. “Even if you end up working with someone else, it never hurts to talk to some of these talented and hard-working professionals.”

The process is similar if you’re looking for a pre-existing home or cottage. “Something as simple as a change of décor can make a world of difference to a property,” Megan says. “Some buyers can picture it right away, but others really benefit from some guidance.” An experienced agent with an eye for detail may be able to suggest changes – ranging from paint colours and lighting to larger renovations that involve removing or adding walls, doors and windows. Here again, Megan often draws on talented professionals in

the area, such as Pat Wood and David McPhee of Rafters of Muskoka, who often consult with buyers on interior décor. “I very much enjoy working with these guys, because they get the job done and work hard for the clients I represent,” Megan says.“We often work together on sales, as well – if I think property needs renovation, something that goes beyond staging before it’s listed, I know I can call on them to do it right.”

“It looks like a long way down,” he laughs, before roaring down the face of the wave and trying to find the sweet spot behind the boat that will allow him to let go of the rope and begin truly wakesurfing. He finds it, but it’s only for a few moments before the nose of his board dips into the warm waters of Fairy Lake, and he vanishes from view.The boat erupts into cheers and applause, as driver Todd Adair expertly circles around to give Bruce another ride.It may not exactly be just another day at the office, but this learn-to-wakesurf session is an important part of the work week for the team at Cayman Marshall. This team definitely subscribes to a “work hard, play hard” philosophy. The

passengers are all staffers at the brokerage, and range from the newly-hired to veterans of the trade. Most have never wakesurfed before, but over the next four hours many of them will give it a try. “We like to do things like this every now and then,” says Todd.

People who live and work in Muskoka often need to explain their work world to visitors, who assume that life in cottage country is one long round of swims and boat rides and barbecues. Residents point out that summer is the busy season in Muskoka, and that while cottagers come here to play and relax, Muskokans need to make hay while the sun shines. What many Muskokans don’t admit is that the explanation is only half true. Work hours can, indeed be long. But when a quiet afternoon beckons, the lake is only a few minutes – sometimes only a few metres – away.

“If you don’t do this sort of thing,” Todd says, “you may as well just live in the city.” One by one, the Cayman Marshall staffers Dawn, Michele, Laura, Jeff, Bruce, kaleigh and Alexandra try their hand on the surfboards, or at least cheer enthusiastically as novices do their best to stay upright.

After a couple of hours, everyone is smiling and most are wet – even those who didn’t board took a dip in the water, cooling off in the first decent swim of the season. With Laura’s help, Michele made a brave but unsuccessful attempt at balancing on the surfboard which provided for some hilarious entertainment for them all! Todd is the last one to surf. A lifelong resident of Muskoka, he’s by far the most experienced rider, and his staff hoot in delight as he expertly slashes the wake and then tries – with limited success – to 360.

The sun is getting low as the boat cruises back to the town dock. The crew is quiet and “life is good”. Some are tired and sporting a sun-kissed glow, but most are checking their phones – there are offers to firm up, showings to arrange, and the work of a busy real estate office to conduct. But after docking, there’s still time to meet up at the pub for an after-work drink with the team. It’s a universal pause that’s greatly appreciated, no matter what your work day has been like.

When trying to come to terms with the value of waterfront property we often hear the saying “it will

never go down because they’re not making anymore of it”.

If you want to put this statement more into perspective, consider this. The waterfront property that you own or are considering to purchase adjoins and gives you access to one of the world’s most valuable and precious resources on the planet. In many regions of the world freshwater is now viewed as a commodity, such as gold and oil…and it is rather scarce. Of all the water on the planet, only 3% is freshwater and of that, only about 0.3 % is the surface water that is in the lakes, rivers and wetlands that we consider to be the cornerstone features of cottage country. The clean pristine water that flows from natural watersheds (like Algonquin Park) to the lakes and rivers that we are most familiar with in the beautiful Muskoka region should be valued, much like the water that makes up 60% of your body.

In many instances cottage purchasers have difficulty viewing a recreational property as being a great investment. Maintenance, repairs, depreciation and taxes that are associated with the buildings and structures often skew the true value of the underlying land and the precious waterfront it adjoins. In Muskoka, we often hear values of $3,000 per shoreline foot for a decent waterfront property. For prime vacant lots, it is not uncommon to hear values in excess of $1,000,000 but when compared to waterfront properties in other regions of the world,

cottage and vacation property in Canada is still very good value. With a simple search online for vacant waterfront properties in popular united States destinations like the Hamptons or international locations such as Tuscany, it is not difficult to find property values that are 5 to 10 times the value of waterfront land in Muskoka. This is not to say that waterfront in cottage country should be valued similar to these regions, but it does show there are wide variations in world property prices, and relatively speaking our prices are still on the low end of the scale. As with any real estate transaction, timing and location are key, but waterfront property on our fresh water lakes is currently a very sound investment. Buy it, cherish it and enjoy it!

“She has always excelled in sports”says Dara’s dad, Doug Howell.

With its soaring jumps and gravity-defying tricks, the event seems an unlikely choice for a girl from a small town in Ontario. But for those who know her, it’s no surprise at all. growing up at Pow-Wow Point Lodge, the Howell’s historic resort on Peninsula Lake in Huntsville, offered the ideal conditions for an adventurous child to whet her appetite for adrenalin-inducing fun. “She has always excelled in sports,” says Dara’s dad, Doug Howell. “No matter what she tried, she often got to the highest level for her age and then had to wait until the training programs caught up with her before she could move on.”

It happened in alpine ski racing and again in figure skating. Winters were spent at nearby Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area where she started skiing at just 18 months. She progressed to the racing program as soon as she was old enough, quickly mastering technique and just as quickly losing interest. It was a similar story in figure skating: she excelled but disliked the technical steps, preferring instead to focus on jumping. Both disciplines laid the groundwork for the sport that would finally capture her interest.

At fifteen, “I started out playing around on the rails at Hidden Valley. The terrain park wasn’t very big then so we started driving down to Mount Saint Louis for training.” And just like that, she was hooked. Even in summer sports and activities, Dara quickly advanced to levels beyond those her same age. She started waterskiing at around three years old, progressing to wakeboarding and surfing as she got older. In the resort’s water park, she could often be seen doing backflips off the tallest tower into the lake.

Dara Howell was born for adventure. A natural athlete and self-confessed daredevil,

the nineteen-year-old Huntsville native became the first woman to win gold in the

inaugural Slopestyle Skiing event at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

Her big brother Brett was a constant source of inspiration. And competition. “I was always doing whatever Brett was doing,” says Dara. “I looked up to him a lot. He would start in sports first and I would follow in his footsteps. I did whatever he did but I was always just better. It was friendly competition.”

Dara comes by her competitive streak honestly. Both Dee and her father ken, who is still skiing at 90 years old, are competitive by nature. Summer is a busy time for the Howells with guests coming and going from the lodge. They eked out as much family time as possible for their kids, but Dara and Brett often had to share time with the resorts guests. “In the summer, we really don’t move from the resort so the kids had to take advantage of everything we had here. We tried to send Dara to camp a few times but she didn’t want to leave,” says Doug. “She had everything she wanted here.”

“Home is like being on vacation,” says Dara with a laugh. “When I was younger, we always spent time in the kids’ programs with resort guests, swimming, learning to waterski, going to movie night. We were like full-time guests. It was a good way to keep busy.”The family lived in the lodge and ate meals in the dining room with the guests. “It was hugely social,” says Dara. “There were always staff and guests around. It taught me to be friendly to everyone and to have fun.”

But it wasn’t all fun and games. The Howells also tried to instill the value of hard work in their kids. When Dara was younger, she served guests in the dining room and later worked at the waterfront, organizing guests to go waterskiing and tubing. Even still, she got to spend her time on and in the water, an experience that still delights her. “Wakesurfing is my current favourite watersport,” says Dara, “but any time I’m home I love just being by the water or being out in the boat with friends.”

She leapt at the chance to wakesurf for the photos accompanying this article, despite the frigid temperatures of the spring waters. It was a mere three weeks after the ice went out and when no wetsuit was available for her to wear, Dara offered to go ahead anyhow. “No problem. I’ve got my bikini and a rash guard,” she said.

“She spent lots of time at the waterfront,” says her mom, Dee

Howell. “She wasn’t a trees and forest girl, although she did get out on the

four-wheeler with (her brother) Brett. She just loved the water so much.”

“It just shows how much of a pro she is,” says Todd Adair, with Cayman Marshall. “We were wearing 5 mil wetsuits out on the water at that point and even found that was cold. Dara made us look bad, but I can see why she is a gold medallist. She really has to roll with the punches and do what it takes to win without complaining. She was definitely an inspiration to all of us.”

She’s been an inspiration to many others, too. Frequent public appearances often have her meeting young children who see that grace and, more importantly, possibility in their new-found idol. It’s a reality that she takes in stride, if a bit incredulously. “This all happened so quickly and in some ways I still feel like a kid.”

When she’s home, Dara still gets to indulge in some of her childhood activities but she has less time to spend on the water these days.

Public appearances and sponsorship commitments often take her away from home and training continues throughout the summer months.“I’m fortunate that I can do some dry land training here in the summer. I’ll also go to Whistler and Mount Hood (in Oregon) to do some on-snow training.” Dara has her sights set on the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South korea, and plans to enjoy all of the training and events leading up to the games over the next four years. And, when possible, she’ll be home.

“I try to hang out on the lake as much as possible,” she says. “growing up at the lodge and on the lake has shaped who I am. I had the opportunity to do so many things and it’s where my passion for sport started. I love it here.”

Built by Hamilton Fraser in 1872 at the head of Lake Joseph, guests arrived at Summit House by boat and horse-drawn stagecoaches to bask in the Muskoka beauty of pine trees, rocky wilderness and pristine waterways. From the wrap-around verandahs, the tinkling of dishes and silverware permeated the air as uniformed porters carefully placed linens on tables for the evening meal. Summit House welcomed local guests, as well as those from the u.S. and abroad even though there was no rail service to Muskoka until 1875. The property was adorned with brightly-painted summerhouses, tennis courts and a 9-hole golf course. Even in the summer of 1914 when war broke out, the happy scene in Port Cockburn was barely touched by the prophetic clangoring from Europe. As a result

of the failing economy during the war, the only businesses that thrived were war-related businesses and Summit House was prematurely closed in September of 1915, following which a raging, unexplained inferno destroyed the hotel. Close to a number of smaller lakes to the north and west where the fish are abundant and miles of woodland trails, this is a wilderness utopia that is ripe for another success story. The land, back to its original state, will never lose the history that so characterizes the beauty of Lake Joseph.

Todd made a name for himself in the tech industry back in 2002 at the ripe old age of 26. That is when he sold his first start-up tech company. His next adventure started in 2004 when he authored, architected and delivered a unique marketing software business for realtors. Although Todd still owns that business as it continues to grow and serve real estate professionals in 26 countries, Todd took a hiatus from software to get practical experience in the industry. In Todd’s first year he was the number one remax agent in Muskoka selling almost $20 Million in waterfront properties. That motivated him to continue on and become the co-founder and president of Cayman Marshall International realty in 2012. In Todd’s down time you will find him on the water wakeboarding, kite surfing, hacking up the fairways of the local golf courses and most importantly spending time with his family including his two children that are 3 and 7 years old.

Jeff grew up cottaging in Muskoka and understands the desire that ultimately drives buyers to this wonderful place he calls home. After working in the Golf industry for some time, Jeff turned his focus back to his entrepreneurial sales roots and has been selling Muskoka fine homes & cottages for the past 6 years. Laura’s professional roles have always been associated with the real estate industry including legal firms, real estate brokerages and cottage rental management organizations. With her charismatic demeanor, knowledge of the industry and her passion for people, she is now well on her way to becoming a licensed realtor. She is known to many students given she is an occasional teacher for both Trillium Lakeland’s District School board and Simcoe County District School board. Muskoka has always been an inspiration to Michele which she reflects through her artistic talent. It is natural that she would combine a love for Muskoka with a passion for teaching and compliment this by selling real estate.
