Liturgical Ministers

Dear friends in Christ,

Today (Wednesday July 1) is the feast day of St. Junipero Serra. He was a Franciscan priest

born in Spain who eventually became a missionary in the United States, and personally

founded nine of the more than 20 missions in the southwest and California. Serra was

canonized in 2015 by Pope Francis at a special Mass in Washington, D.C. You may have

heard Serra's name in the news recently because a statue of his was torn down by

protesters in San Francisco. For a response to this act, you might appreciate the context

given by Archbishop Cordileone in his letter to the Washington Post at https://www.washingtonpost.com/

opinions/2020/06/30/statues-saint-junpero-serra-deserve-stay/. I'm sure St. Junipero made mistakes and

committed sins during his missionary work. He would be the first to have confessed them. I'm not so sure that

the idea of subjecting every historical figure to a kind of modern moral purity test is a good one. Who could

pass? It seems a better approach is honest debate and dialogue, so that the full picture can be assessed. In

2003, the state of Georgia decided to remove the symbol of the Confederate flag from its state flag, as did the

state of Mississippi last week. These acts, carried out by those who are held accountable to their constituents,

and following the rules of debate and procedure, make sense. Not to mention that at least some contemporary

usage of the Confederate flag image seems tied directly to racist sentiment and language, (undoubtedly a part

of the push behind the change) whereas no one today is using any image of St. Junipero Serra to advocate

mistreatment of anyone. Well, no one ever said the world had to make sense.

I have the week off next week on vacation to visit some friends. Have a happy and safe 4th of July, and please

celebrate our nation's birth and independence with responsibility and consideration for others. We are

given freedom to be exercised with the common good in mind. "For freedom Christ set us free. So stand firm

and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery." (Galatians 5:1) We were once slaves to sin, including the sin of

not caring enough about others to make concrete choices to love them and seek their good. No more! We are

supposed to be "dead to sin" now (Romans 6:11).

In Christ, Fr. Nick

'Mental Health Minute' Videos

Has the COVID19 pandemic left you feeling

out of sorts in a way you can’t quite de-

scribe? In addition to the physical toll, an emotional heavi-

ness is also being experienced by many. If you’re experienc-

'Mental Health Minute' videos on a variety of topics, emo-

PRAYER FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY God, source of all freedom,

this day is bright with the memory

of those who declared that life and liberty

are your gift to every human being.

Help us to continue a good work begun long ago.

Make our vision clear and our will strong:

that only in human solidarity will we defend liberty,

and justice only in the honor that belongs to every life on earth.

Turn our hearts toward the family of nations:

to understand the ways of others,

to offer friendship,

and to find safety only in the common good of all.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
