Kristin Consuegra
Coordinator of Youth Ministry
OPV Catholic Parishes
My friends in Christ,
Wow, it’s the end of July already and it seems that the
summer time is flying by! Our Youth Ministry has been very
active and busy this summer, which is probably why it feels
like summer has been a whirlwind! We have had many social
events for the teenagers in our grouping this summer,
including a competitive evening of dodgeball at Saint Joseph,
a cake filled birthday party with lawn games for baby Jonah at
Saint Januarius, and a mini-golf challenge at the Willows Golf
Course. Our social events have been fun; but we also wanted
to give our youth an opportunity to serve others if they felt God
was calling them to do so….if they heard the knocking of a
friend, if you will.
In the gospel this week we hear Jesus teach the disciples
how to pray. He tells them that God the Father will always
have their/our best interest in mind when we go to Him. He will
not ‘hand us a snake’ when we are in need of ‘loaves of
bread.’ We go to Him with our needs and our prayers asking
Him to wrap His loving arms around us and take care of us;
but what if it’s reversed? What if God is knocking at our door
through one of our ‘neighbors’ asking one of us for help? Do
we turn away or choose to serve?
This summer, our teens had the opportunity to carefully
listen for a knock for help in a few different ways. Several of
the teenagers volunteered their time as group leaders, station
leaders, and program coordinators for ROAR; our week of
vacation bible school held at Saint John the Baptist. The
volunteers were enthusiastic and whole-heartedly served the
children that attended the week. Each one encouraged the
children to learn more about the Catholic faith through
inspiring bible stories, energizing songs of worship, and being
an ear to listen and befriend the campers.
A group of four young men from our parishes felt called to
go out and serve the people of Clearfield County for a week at
the end of June for our annual Mission Trip. These young men
spent the week working together with the teens and their adult
chaperones of three other parishes to meet the needs of those
neighbors, who were knocking for help, in one of the poorest
counties in the state of Pennsylvania. The physical and
spiritual needs included repairing and replacing roofs,
landscaping, painting, cleaning, organizing, being an attentive
listener to the lonely, and visiting with the elderly.
Finally, our youth ministry had the opportunity to serve our
grouping and our local community by volunteering at our
Family Festival. During the festival, our teens had the option
to spend the evenings providing refreshing sno-cones and
cold drinks to festival goers on those hot evenings. Several
teens also volunteered their time in other various food and
game booths and helped the grounds crew.
In all three of these service opportunities our youth were
able to help meet the needs of others by listening for their
‘knocks’ for help; whether it be a small child that needed a
partner for a game of tag at VBS, an elderly man who needed
help replacing the siding on his home and sharing a story of
two from his past, or preparing a cool treat on a hot day for a
festival patron. Maybe in turn some of our teens received from
those they were serving; open doors with smiling faces in
response to his/her spiritual knock. It is with each encounter to
those whom we serve that we are able to see the face of
Christ, respond to His call, and receive His open hands of
blessings.
I wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable rest of the summer
and maybe listen for a knock or two!
Peace & Blessings,
Kristin

ALLELUIA ROM 8:15 BC
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
You have received a Spirit of adoption,
through which we cry, Abba, Father.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL LK 11:1-13
Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished,
one of his disciples said to him,
"Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples."
He said to them, "When you pray, say:
Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread
and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us,
and do not subject us to the final test."
And he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend
to whom he goes at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey
and I have nothing to offer him,' and he says in reply from within,
'Do not bother me; the door has already been locked
and my children and I are already in bed.
I cannot get up to give you anything.'
I tell you, if he does not get up to give the visitor the loaves
because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs
because of his persistence.
"And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds;
and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
What father among you would hand his son a snake
when he asks for a fish?
Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg?
If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children,
how much more will the Father in heaven
give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?"
READING I GN 18:20-32
In those days, the LORD said: "The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so
great, and their sin so grave, that I must go down and see whether or not their
actions fully correspond to the cry against them that comes to me.
I mean to find out."
While Abraham's visitors walked on farther toward Sodom,
the LORD remained standing before Abraham.
Then Abraham drew nearer and said:
"Will you sweep away the innocent with the guilty?
Suppose there were fifty innocent people in the city;
would you wipe out the place, rather than spare it
for the sake of the fifty innocent people within it?
Far be it from you to do such a thing, to make the innocent die with the guilty
so that the innocent and the guilty would be treated alike!
Should not the judge of all the world act with justice?"
The LORD replied, "If I find fifty innocent people in the city of Sodom,
I will spare the whole place for their sake."
Abraham spoke up again: "See how I am presuming to speak to my Lord,
though I am but dust and ashes!
What if there are five less than fifty innocent people?
Will you destroy the whole city because of those five?"
He answered, "I will not destroy it, if I find forty-five there."
But Abraham persisted, saying "What if only forty are found there?"
He replied, "I will forbear doing it for the sake of the forty."
Then Abraham said, "Let not my Lord grow impatient if I go on.
What if only thirty are found there?"
He replied, "I will forbear doing it if I can find but thirty there."
Still Abraham went on, "Since I have thus dared to speak to my Lord,
what if there are no more than twenty?"
The LORD answered, "I will not destroy it, for the sake of the twenty."
But he still persisted:
"Please, let not my Lord grow angry if I speak up this last time.
What if there are at least ten there?"
He replied, "For the sake of those ten, I will not destroy it."

R.(3a) Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.
I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with all my heart,
for you have heard the words of my mouth;
in the presence of the angels I will sing your praise;
I will worship at your holy temple and give thanks to your name.
R. Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.
Because of your kindness and your truth;
for you have made great above all things your name and your promise.
When I called you answered me; you built up strength within me.
R. Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.
The LORD is exalted, yet the lowly he sees, and the proud he knows from afar.
Though I walk amid distress, you preserve me;
against the anger of my enemies you raise your hand.
R. Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.
Your right hand saves me.
The LORD will complete what he has done for me;
your kindness, O LORD, endures forever;
forsake not the work of your hands.
R. Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.

Brothers and sisters: You were buried with him in baptism,
in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God,
who raised him from the dead. And even when you were dead
in transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh,
he brought you to life along with him, having forgiven us all our transgressions;
obliterating the bond against us, with its legal claims, which was opposed to us,
he also removed it from our midst, nailing it to the cross.

ALL SCHOOLS AND CHURCHES OPEN IN OPV
As of July 1, we have started to consolidate the grouping staff to serve our combined parishes. We are currently in the process of getting office
computers configured and phone systems updated, while some staff are taking much deserved vacation and rest over the summer months. Thanks again
to all parishioners for their patience and understanding as we make these transitions over the summer. Joyce Doyle currently serves the Oakmont and
Verona community as the Office and Accounts Administrator. Starting August 1, 2019 Joyce Doyle will be available at St. Irenaeus Parish for Monday and
Friday mornings, 8 a.m. to Noon to accommodate parishioners attending 9 a.m. Monday Mass or Friday Noon Mass there. She will be available at St.
Joseph Parish office on Monday afternoon, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Barb Pronio is the Main Office administrator for the Plum parishes and is
located at Our Lady of Joy Church Parish office. Once phone systems are updated, Barb will be answering the phones for all five parishes. Karen Deemer
is the Bulletin Editor and works at St. John the Baptist Parish office. Patty Mahr serves the Plum parishes accounts and is located at Our Lady of Joy Parish
office.
At the end of the summer, all three of our schools will be open for students. St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph K-8 programs are still open for
enrollment for 2019-2020 School Year. St. Irenaeus, St. John and St. Joseph Pre Schools are currently open for enrollment also and many parents are
getting tours over the summer. St. Irenaeus and St. John continue to have thriving pre-schools and St. Joseph is new this year. St. Irenaeus, St. Januarius,
St. John the Baptist, St. Joseph and Our Lady of Joy Churches are all open with Masses every weekend and weekdays as scheduled.
There are no plans to close any of our churches, schools, or preschools.
In September, our five parish religious education program will launch with classroom hours regularly on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays at
either St. Irenaeus or St. John the Baptist School buildings. St. Januarius. St. Joseph and Our Lady of Joy will host FIRE Masses for family catechesis in
our grouping.
Please continue to get information about our parishes and schools from the official combined parish bulletin for OPV (Oakmont, Plum & Verona)
Parishes and NOT from parking lot guesses, gossip, or chatter.
In Our Grouping and Around the Diocese...
SCHOOL ATHLETIC PROGRAM NEWS
With the school year about to begin, I wanted to inform all St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph School families of the change that was made in our
Athletic program. In the past, we have combined sports activities with both schools. The Girls Volleyball team, Cross Country, and Track teams have been
a combination of both St. John and St. Joe’s student athletes. This will continue for the 2019-20 school year. The Athletic Committees of both schools have
come together to form one committee. There were some interest in the AD position from both schools, but it was decided that Kristin Consuegra be named
the new Athletic Director of the newly formed Athletic Committee. As you know, Kristin Consuegra was announced as the Youth Minister for our entire
grouping of parishes. Kristen attended Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Greensburg as a child. She and her family have been parishioners of Our Lady of
Joy for several years. She has a Master’s degree in Sports Studies and is working toward her Master’s degree in Theology at Franciscan University of
Steubenville. As the Athletic Director, she will be more directly involved with the middle school students and parents and be aware of their schedules and
the gym schedule for our middle school youth program. Kristin should receive assistance if needed from the former Athletic Director’s Bob Hensler (SJV),
Dave Goldstein (SJB ) and the coaches during this transition stage.
We will run the same programs as we have in the past, the boys and girls basketball teams will continue to be made up of St.
John and St. Joseph student athletes. No combining of the basketball teams will occur this year because it would place the team in
a higher bracket to compete with larger schools. Hopefully, the combining of athletic programs will not deter those who have
volunteered their time as coaches for our student athletes. The programs will run as they have before, but issues will need to be
brought up to Kristin or to me. If there are any questions, please feel free to call me.
God bless,
Mr. Beau Quattrone, OPV Catholic Schools Principal
