Dear Friends: This gospel is the one we normally hear at wakes, the vigil before the funeral, and it comes as many gospels do to wake us up. As a Christian we always need to be ready to meet

God, our father. It is not something that scares us; rather it is what we look forward to. Many saints spoke of death as their sister, longing for it. This sense of preparation is very much related to giving away all our possessions and building our treasure in heaven. Where is our treasure, dear friends? What is it that we dream about and what gives us pleasure when we see the monotony, the dullness of our lives?

When we are honest we see that our treasure may be related to a person (maybe not your spouse) or a vacation spot, or endless peace and quiet, or some material thing or home or location. The devil is very good at creating this imaginary world in our mind and we almost believe that it is real and that it can make us happy. Somehow we do not think that God can make us happy. It is a perfect house down at the shore or in Rutherford that will satisfy us.

How we treat others, especially the little ones around us, says much about who we are. The little ones are those who cannot fight back, who are under our authority and in some way are smaller than us. Are we the steward who beats those under him, who acts one way in church and another way at work or with our friends? Do we live some aspects of our lives, our thoughts or inner desires, as if God, or our family, did not see them?

The Word of God comes always to help us to see that we need to convert, to change the direction of our lives so that we will be happy and ready when the Lord comes for us. We are made for heaven, brothers and sisters. Let us take our life seriously and not put off those things we need to do today. I like that distinction concerning what is important and what is urgent. Urgent things are making sure we have what we need in the house or the parish; important things have to do with our happiness, with our relationships with others. Let not the devil convince us that we have all the time in the world to make straight our relationship with God and with others.

Many thanks for your generous response with toilet tissue during the month of June. We are now well stocked in that department. Your kindness is deeply appreciated. Remember the inspiration from the gospel. "And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because he is a disciple—amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.” Mt 10:42. For your continued generosity, may you be blessed!

REMEMBER THE CHURCH IN YOUR WILL

Do you have a will? A wonderful way to help our parish and to save taxes is to remember St. Joe’s

in your will. There are still many large renovations that will be needed to reopen the Lyceum and the

Convent. Some small steps make it possible to leave a legacy for decades to the place that has

nourished you for many years. If you need more information in setting up a will, please call the

parish office. It is possible to arrange for some practical help on this and related topics.

The Sanctuary Candles will burn this week in Memory of

Stephanie Mejias, as requested by her parents.

The Acolyte Candle will burn this week in Memory of

Joseph Lopez as requested by Donata Casale .

RENOVATED SACRISTY CABINETS Thanks to the work of Junior Santos, a missionary

in Guam and Carlos Quieroz, our maintenance men, the cabinets of the sacristy have been

sanded and stained to look brand new. This is in addition to our completed plaster work and painting thanks to the hard work of Declan

Mellett, the master of the plaster, and a good parishioner. Step by step God is restoring the

original beauty of our church and parish. Please consider giving back two hours a month; for every

parishioner we have a ministry, a service. Thank you for your consideration.

ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL 2013 AAA

Our Goal is $28,000.00 How We Are Doing:

Total pledged to date- $25,425.00 Number of Donors– 136

Many thanks to the Parishioners who gave so generously to the AAA. Don’t delay in giving

anything that you can to the Archbishop’s appeal. Thank you for your generosity.

UPGRADED SOUND SYSTEM As we mentioned earlier the sound system was in

need of an overhaul, which was completed

recently and the difference is remarkable. For

those who are hard of hearing there is another

setting that can be used that makes the sound

even louder so let us know how this normal

setting works first.

TD BANK We thank TD Bank for visiting us recently and speaking about their Infinity Program. The program works on existing and

new accounts and a small fee is paid to the parish for each account and as a percentage of the balances. This fee is not taken from the personal accounts but is paid by the Bank as a help to the

community. Forms to sign up for the Infinity Program are at the back of the church.

NEW ENERGIES NEWS Our New Energies Parish Partnership with St. Mary’s is ongoing and important for the life and new energy of our parishes. Archbishop Myers has stated, “A primary project goal is to strengthen the presence and ministry of the Church throughout the Archdiocese.” A team from both parishes is working to achieve this goal. In evaluating and planning together, the team is working on reaching out to the adults to

provide adult faith f o r m a t i o n opportunities. Coming this fall St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s will offer the Neocatechumenate Catechesis and the Discovering Christ Program. Both offer you the opportunity to

draw closer to Christ. The Neocatechumenate catechesis will be offered at St. Joseph’s. The Discovering Christ Program will be offered at St. Mary’s and lead by a team of parishioners from both parishes. The Discovering Christ program is beginning to form the team that will lead this program. You are invited to be part of the team! Discovering Christ offers opportunities for us to draw closer to Jesus. Want to know more? Please call the parish office for more information.

FELICIAN READING CENTER The Felician Reading Center will offer a Fall Reading Improvement Program for students in Grades 2, 3, 4 and 5. The program will begin on September 23, 2013 and end on December 19, 2013. The classes are held twice a week—Mondays and

Wednesdays OR Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:00 P.m. The program will aim to increase reading with primary emphasis on the improvements of “phonics, v o c a b u l a r y a n d

comprehension skills.” Testing will be required for placement and there is a weekly fee for services rendered. The Felician Reading Center is located at 260 South Main Street in Lodi, New Jersey. For further information, call Sister Mary Andrew at (973) 473-7447, extension 123. Thank you for your participation.
