Catholic Schools Office Diocese of Broken Bay Excerpt from a Letter to St Kieran’s School Community Dear members of staff, parents and parishioners, After careful and considered reflection, Mrs Terri Paterson has decided that she will not renew her contract as Principal of St Kieran’s and will be leaving the school community at the end of the 2016 school year. Terri commenced at the school in Term 3 of 2004 and so initiated a twelve year commitment to St Kieran’s. Terri has been a wonderful Principal for St Kieran’s, forging a very strong culture at a Catholic school in which students have been offered the opportunity to grow in their faith and know better the person of Jesus. As Principal Terri is extremely grateful for the privilege of leading the St Kieran’s school community during this time and acknowledges the guidance of the Augustinian Fathers, the companionship of her colleagues, the dedicated and committed staff, support of the parent community and quality of learning opportunities presented at the system level. Terri is looking forward to the many possibilities that lie ahead especially spending more time with her devoted family. Terri is highly respected amongst her peer Principals across the Diocese of Broken Bay. She has been a mentor to other Principals and shared her gifts willingly. I thank Terri for her wonderful contribution to St Kieran’s. I am confident that at a later date there will be a time to celebrate her leadership in an appropriate way.” Yours sincerely Peter Hamill Director of Schools

April 10th. 2016

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

This coming Thursday I am heading off for three week’s holiday on what I hope will be a relaxing and refreshing adventure. There is sometimes more enjoyment in the planning of such things than the actual event, but the prospect of a complete break like this has renewed my spirit before I have even begun. One lesson I will learn from being absent for this short time is that the parish will continue to flourish without me because it is Christ who stands on the shore of our lives and encourages us to leave the security of our boats and come to be fed by him with the very life he shares with the Father.

Like Peter, we rush to profess our loyalty - in baptism renouncing the world and its enticements; in confirmation, to be faithful witnesses for the duration of our lives; in penance, never to sin again; in marriage, to love ‘for better, for worse until death do us part. Yet experience has shown that we have so often failed to live up to our own pledges. In so many ways it soon becomes apparent that we need help to be the true persons we hope to be.

Today’s Gospel assures us that at times of frailty and perceived failure in our lives the Lord is the one who is constantly coming to renew the communion that we may have broken with him. He calls us to his table, even when we have denied or deserted him. As he does so, he asks the question that matters most to him, ‘Do you love me?’ It is a question that invites us to surrender to the Lord’s love so that we can begin to love again. Refusal to admit that we are able to be forgiven is the highest point of pride. Like Peter we must leap out of the boat and go to the Lord as sinners, yes, but loved!

The living out of that relationship will always involve feeding the Lord’s flock, caring for others, especially in their moments of greatest vulnerability. His invitation to Peter, ‘Feed my lambs, feed my sheep’ is addressed to us all. We have a pastoral responsibility for each other, especially while I am away!

Why we do the things we do

Why Sunday?

On Sundays we celebrate Christ’s resurrection

from the dead. According to the biblical story, on the seventh day God rested having completed the creation of the world. Appropriately, on the

first day of the week Christians commemorate the ‘new creation’: the renewal of the world through Christ’s loving sacrifice. Traditionally

Christians approach this day as a day of worship and celebration, focusing on their faith community and their family. This Sunday, take

time out to give extra emphasis to this celebration. (E.g., Spend time with your children,

take a walk with a friend, prayerfully review the Sunday readings.)
