SS. Peter & Paul

First Sunday after Mass

Fourth Sunday of Easter May 3, 2020

By Decree from the Most Reverend David L Ricken, DD, JCL, Bishop of Green Bay

Two weeks ago, on April 19, Holy

Rosary was scheduled to invite a number of

young boys and girls to the altar of God for

the first time to receive Holy Communion.

This Sunday, May 3, Ss. Peter & Paul was

scheduled to do the same. In both cases

that special day needed to be postponed

until a later date.

Three people had been preparing to

be brought into the Catholic faith this Easter

through RCIA – two were to be baptized

and one confirmed. These individuals,

longing to be a part of what you and I

share, continue to wait. That event, too,

needed to be rescheduled to a later date.

Driving home last evening, I saw

three signs outside of places of residence

that stated a Kiel Graduate Lives Here! It is

Kiel’s way of honoring those seniors who,

at the time of this writing, may or may

not have a ceremony to honor their

accomplishments.

My friends, we live in an historic

time. The celebrations we take for granted

within the lives of our families and our

communities – those First Communions,

Graduations, Baptisms and Weddings –

those events that mark a new beginning

and the passing of time, are all put on

hold. So how do we mark the time now?

What we are living in right now is

called liminal time. It is that time when we

are betwixt and between. We have left the

old, but the new has not yet presented itself.

We know that this in-between time will not

last but we don’t know what it will look like

on the other side. It can be a time of anxiety

or uncertainty – but it can also be a time of

hope and excitement wondering how and

when and in what form God will show

God’s self to us on the other side of this

event.

But one thing we know for certain:

God walks with us through this time. Our

readings this week assure us of it.

In John’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us

that He is the Good Shepherd. He calls

each of us by name and He leads us out,

for we recognize His voice. Jesus came, he

says, that we may have life and have it

more abundantly.

Our responsorial Psalm says it

equally as beautifully. The Lord is our

Shepherd, and we shall want for nothing.

Sometimes he will lead us to verdant

pastures where we find rest. And at other

times we are led through a dark valley –

but even then, we need fear no evil, for

He accompanies us with His rod and staff.

Even though we may not see it yet, He

spreads the table before us and invites us

into His banquet.

My friends – I say all of this to

remind us as this pandemic reaches week

seven: Yes, these are odd and uncertain

times. Many of the signposts of our lives

have had to be rescheduled or cancelled.

But you know what wasn’t cancelled?

Easter. Resurrection. None of this

stopped Jesus from rising from the dead.

We still remember His victory over the forces

of this world and, as followers baptized

into His being, we share that same victory.

He walks with us through this dark valley

now, but restful pastures and sumptuous

banquets are being spread before us, even

if we may not envision them right now. We

need to trust that there is nothing Christ

cannot and has not overcome, including a

small virus, social distancing and schedule

cancellations. He came that we may have

life, and have it more abundantly.

Cup O’ Joe

Weekly Reflections by Joseph Zenk, Pastoral Leader

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Cocktail Hour

Who hasn’t been enjoying more cocktails during this pandemic quarantine time? And who hasn’t been longing for community? Well – how about we bring those two elements together into a virtual cocktail hour?

Joe Zenk will send out a weekly invitation to the first 20 people that email him ([email protected]) for a Zoom chat to be held each Thursday evening at 5:00 p.m. beginning this Thursday, May 7. You are not signing up for a cocktail hour each week by sending Joe an email – just for that week. And frankly, I (Joe) have very little tech savvy and no idea how this will go, so patience and good cheer (along with your drink!) will be most necessary.

Come have a drink with others and share stories of how you are doing!

YouTube Channel & Podcasts

Check out each of our websites and click on the Youtube link for a selection of Masses, Liturgy of the Word services, Stations of the Cross or recitations of the Rosary. There is also a podcast link on Ss. Peter & Paul’s homepage (ssppkiel.org) which connects you directly to the audio version of a daily (M-F) Cup o’ Joe podcast. If you listen to podcasts on your phone, you can also subscribe to Cup o’ Joe through iTunes or Spotify.

Need to Talk?

Don’t be afraid to call any of us at the offices. While the offices are closed, staff will be checking their mes-sages frequently and will be back in touch. Emergency situation? Contact Joe at (920)918.0903

Sacrament of Reconciliation

Fr. Carl is still present for the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion, should you desire to partake of that. He is at Holy Rosary on Wednesdays at 5:00 and Ss. Peter & Paul Sundays at 9:00 a.m.

Churches Open

If you are looking for a spiritual uplift, or simply desirous to be in a familiar space with the company of parishion-ers, our churches will be open on a rotating basis from 3-6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday (Mon & Thurs: Ss. Peter & Paul; Tues & Fri: St. Ann; Wed & Sat: Holy Ro-sary). Ss. Peter & Paul will also be open on Sunday mornings from 9:00 to Noon.

This is seen as essential to who we are as a community, and has the blessing of local law enforcement. Christ will be exposed in a monstrance at each of our parishes for adoration. And prayer tools have been put out to

assist you in your faith walk, should you wish. Deacon Randy, Deacon Dennis or Joe will be present as well in case you need someone to talk to or pray with.

Limit 10!!

Just a reminder – that if you come to pray in our church-es when the Eucharist is exposed, we are still limited to only 10 people at a time in the worship space. If you come and see that there are 10 people already within the church, please be patient and wait for someone to leave. Also, if you notice that others are waiting while you are still in prayer, please be courteous and allow others the chance to have that same prayer time. Thank you for honoring the constraints placed upon us during this time.

Virtual Retreat

Looking for some spiritual nourishment during this time of quarantine? Epiphany Cathedral in Venice, FL, invited Fr. Shawn Monahan (a priest of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary out of Boston) in to do a three part mini retreat on How We Can Live More the Risen Life Jesus Invites Us to Live. These talks help flesh out how we, as followers of Christ, can live more fully that abundant life that Jesus in-vites us into.

Simply go to their website (epiphanycathedral.org), scroll down toward the bottom of the page, click on the link marked "3 Part Mini Retreat with Fr. Shawn Monahan" and click on whichever part you would like to watch.
