First Sunday of Advent December 2, 2018

FROM THE PASTOR... This is the 1st Sunday of Advent. This is the beginning of the Church’s liturgical year and the beginning of our time of preparation to celebrate the birth of the Lord Jesus at Christmas. But our Gospel for mass speaks of the second coming of Jesus rather than his irst coming when he was born of Mary at Bethlehem. There is powerful end times imagery and it is very challenging. The main theme of this reading is really to be ready at any moment for the second coming of the Lord. The quiet season of Advent is geared to just this preparation in readiness to meet the Lord. If we do not become caught up in planning for the Christmas celebrating that we intend to do, we can follow the call of this holy season to prepare the way of the Lord in our hearts. It is very hard to do so as the world around us is skipping ahead to the feast of Christmas with no thought to preparing for it in our hearts. All the talk of gift giving for material things for each other. The unspoken question is, what about your gift for the Lord for the celebration of his birth? Each of us should irst work on what we will offer to the Lord when we come to mass on his birthday at Christmas. Gifts for ourselves and others come as a result of Jesus’ birth, and our joy at His birth then can be put into perspective. What will you offer to the Lord in honor of his birthday this Christmas? Advent is when we do that discerning in our hearts. One excellent way to make this Advent Season help us to prepare a gift for Jesus in our hearts is the Parish Cluster Mission coming up next week. Fr. Ken Geraci from the Fathers of Mercy will be here beginning with the masses for the Holy Day of the Immaculate Conception next Friday evening and Saturday morning through next Thursday, December 13th. He will speak of the Church and Spirituality, why we do certain things as Catholics, spiritual combat, obstacles to healing with a healing service, and how to pray the Mass. This is an opportunity to prepare to celebrate Christmas with a heart well prepared to offer something quite special to the Lord in honor of his birthday on December 25th. I urge you to make every effort to attend as many evenings of the retreat as you can. Next week in the bulletin you will ind the annual inancial report once again. During the legal con licts of the Archdiocese, parishes were requested by the Archdiocese to refrain from publishing their inancial reports to avoid possible attachment into the settlement of law suits against the Archdiocese. The lawsuits have been inalized and the bankruptcy issues settled so we are at liberty to resume publishing our inancials, which we will do next week.

Baptisms: Parent preparation session is required. Please contact the Parish Office for information.

Marriages: Make arrangements with the pastor 6-8 months in advance. You must be a registered parishioner at least six months prior to beginning marriage preparation. Cohabiting couples will normally be required to separate before scheduling a wedding.
