BRANDMARK | Symbolism

The new brandmark of the Diocese of Parramatt a is a creati ve response to Pope Francis’ call to:

“...be bold and creative in this task of rethinking the goals, structures, styles and methods of evangelisation.”

The shield, Chi Rho, river swirls, mountain slopes and colours from the offi cial crest are preserved and refreshed in a modern abstract design.

P represents Parramatt a and Chi Rho is the symbol of Christ.

The new brandmark represents not only the literal geographic profi le of the Diocese but also its important role and presence as the Catholic Church in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

COAT OF ARMS | History and symbolism

The Arms of the Diocese of Parramatta is a metaphor of the geography of the Diocese and the signs of the unifying force of Christ.

It reflects colours and images that are identified with Parramatta and the wide area of the See.

Next to the shield is a processional cross, and above it is a mitre: these insignia show that this is a Roman Catholic Diocese.

The blue of the shield runs from the City to the Blue Mountains, as shown by two points at the top of the top of the shield.

The shield is cut in half by the river - this represents the Nepean Hawkesbury River.

The colours used by Parramatta generally are blue and gold and are the basis of our shield.

Over the shield is the monogram representing Christ the King - the letters X and P (Chi Roh) are, in Greek, the first two letters of the name ‘Christ’ - and this monogram is crowned, showing the kingship of Christ in our lives: in heraldry, this shows the Diocese is protected by Christ.

COAT OF ARMS | Versions

Discreti on will be left to the Bishop or Diocesan Administrator if they choose to use the offi cial crest or Diocesan brandmark.
