The Collect for the Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity

Today’s Collect is derived from the Latin original in the ancient Leonine Sacramentary, named after Pope St.

Leo the Great whose pontificate lasted from AD 440 to 461. Thereafter, this same prayer made its way into the

Gelasian and Gregorian Sacramentaries and thence into the medieval Sarum Missal and later into the first

Book of Common Prayer (1549) where it was appointed for the Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity. In its elegant

English translation, this collect is characteristic of the oldest Roman orations in its striking brevity and powerful

comprehensiveness:

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God: give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain that which thou dost promise, make us to love that which thou dost command; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Alluding to the great discourse on love in I Corinthians 13 (“now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but

the greatest of these is charity”), this prayer aptly sums up the logic of the Gospel: by the grace of God, vouch-

safed in the gifts of faith and hope, lived out in charity, we are made worthy of the promises of Christ and be-

come capable of keeping the commandments not out of obligation but in love.

The collect’s petition (“make us to love that which thou dost command”) pleads for God to close the gap be-

tween “I ought” and “I want.” The prayer thus recapitulates the fulfillment of the Covenant of Law in the

Covenant of Grace: we are not justified by outward obedience to the precepts of righteousness, which merely

expose our shortcomings, but by the inward, indwelling, and transformative power of divine love. The collect

asks God to augment our natural powers that we might become persons who wish and aspire to perform, from

the heart, what He commands us to do.

Affirming that love precedes and enables the keeping of law, this prayer distils the wisdom of Romans 6:17:

“Thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard

of teaching to which you were committed.” The same dynamic of grace, compactly expressed in this Sunday’s

collect, can be read in William Cowper’s great hymn entitled “Love Constraining to Obedience”:

To see the law by Christ fulfilled, And hear His pardoning voice,

Changes a slave into a child, And duty into choice.

. Dr. Clint Brand
