Administrator’s Message June Newsletter

“A Change Will do you Good” is a peppy little song by Sheryl Crow and definitely a bit

of a mantra for next year. A number of changes for next year have already been

shared. We will no longer have bussing within the community. SAGE students coming

from outside of Caswell in grade 5 will still have access to SPSD busing, while SAGE

grade 6-8 will be provided city bus passes if needed. This creates opportunity for

many of our kids to have a nice healthy walk to and from school every day.

We will also see a reduction in our office staff. As a result, we are taking this as an

opportunity to “go digital” where it will be more efficient. You will see a message

about Text Magic in this newsletter. We will also be going to email newsletters next

year and booking conferences online. Yes parents, this means you will have to learn to

use the portal. Good thing we all have a growth mindset.

There are a number of staff changes that we are certain of. We are saying farewell to

Ms. Raginski in the office and Ms. Laliberte and Mrs. Pataki from the community

team. Mrs. McKenzie and Ms. Myers are off to brand new schools. We thank all

departing staff for their commitment to the Caswell community and wish them all the

best in the future. We want to congratulate Mrs. Kembel and thank her for her many

years of service to Caswell and to children wherever she has taught. Mrs. Kembel will

be retiring at the end of the year. We also welcome Mrs. Laturnus as our new Vice

Principal and resource teacher. There will be other staffing changes when the school

division finalizes staffing.

We are in the midst of a bustling June. Teachers and students are preparing for report

cards and completing final assessments. We can’t wait to see the growth of our

students reflected in the results! We celebrated the performance of Mighty Minds in

the school musical, track day, Mount Royal Powwow and the band concerts this week.

There are numerous outdoor learning trips scheduled. Please take an opportunity to

join in the learning with your child’s class.

Have a marvelous June and we wish everyone a happy summer.

From the Board Table

Highlights from the May 9, 2017, meeting of the Board of Education:

The integration of the Michif language as part of the Métis Cultural Program located at Westmount Community School was highlighted during the evening’s Celebrating Excellence segment. Michif is used in the delivery of curricular outcomes to kindergarten to Grade 4 students within the Métis cultural classroom and through the team teaching experiences offered in grades 5 to 8. Students shared and demonstrated their learning to trustees.

Staff from Bedford Road Collegiate and Mount Royal Collegiate spoke about the work being done as part of the Following Their Voices

initiative and how it has impacted teacher practice and student engagement. Following Their Voices is a Saskatchewan-specific

initiative designed to improve Métis, First Nations and Inuit student outcomes by engaging and supporting students through

changes in student-teacher relationships, instructional practices and the learning environment.

A biannual survey of school division employees shows 96 per cent of respondents agree or strongly agree that they enjoy their

workplace and 89 per cent indicate they have had the opportunity to learn and grow professionally. Areas of the survey where

staff indicated the highest level of agreement reflected a shared purpose focusing on student learning and a positive level of

mutual support and assistance provided by workplace colleagues.

Reports and information presented at board meetings can be found at www.saskatoonpublicschools.ca. The next meeting of the Board

of Education is Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
