As reported by David Perry in the June edition of Furniture Today, Ashley continues to set a torrid growth pace in the mattress industry, recording a 19% sales gain last year to crack the Top 10 with bedding revenues of $119 million. NO other Top 15 bedding producer could match that growth rate.

In May of 2017, the Annual Furniture Today Bedding conference was held. This conference examined the key details of mattress retail. Here are 4 things that one of the bloggers from Furniture Today learned from the conference.

1. “The return on investment of social media is that your business will exist in five years.” That powerful statement was made by a keynote speaker, Eric Qualman who is a digital guru. Qualman also went on to mention that technology does not erase the need for face to face meetings.

2. “ I am not responsible for my first thought. I am responsible for my second thought.” That quote was delivered by Jim Jacobus, whose spoke about the traits of top salespeople. “I love the humanity of that insight, which recognizes that we are all human and that we sometimes react with a full range of emotions, including anger, denial and the urge to strike back. But the true professional will let your emotions go and then react with calm and cool precision to the situation at hand.” David Perry

3. 26% of consumers responding to a broad survey of mattress shoppers said they bought a mattress online. If one quarter of consumers who recently shopped for a bed bought online, the bedding world is changing right before our eyes.

4. “Todays mattress buyer is not the Baby Boomer we've grown accustomed to. Rather, today’s buyer is younger, with a broad range of needs and motivations for purchase.” Phil Johnson also said that the core buyers are between 25-44. He suggested that retailers should have Millennials and Gen Xers on their sales staffs.

Back in college I applied for a job at the chain sub shop Jimmy Johns.

There were two parts to the application: the basic application form, background

check, etc., and memorizing what was on each sandwich. Before securing the job,

I had to take a test and write out what each sandwich had on it.

As I stood in Jimmy Johns buying a sandwich the other day, I thought about how

useful this technique could be to furniture retailers.

It’s obvious that having salespeople memorize your product’s details means they

can be more helpful to customers. In fact, many industry insiders have told me that

educating salespeople is the most important aspect of consumer education.

But perhaps part of the hiring process should include an entry-level memorization

test to see if the potential employee is right for the job.

Not only can this show you which employees really want the job, it can give you a

feel of how they both memorize and relay the information given to them.

Try having applicants memorize a small amount of information about your

products — whether it’s the brands you carry, the different styles of furniture you

offer or the materials used in certain pieces. Include in the job description that they

will be responsible for some memorization before being hired.

If you hire them, you’ll know three things: 1) they’re motivated enough to handle

this type of job; 2) they’re able to learn, retain and relay information; and 3) they

know the basics on their first day. From there, you can continue their education

and help them evolve into a true sales professional.

The best way to ensure salespeople can help customers is by making sure they’re

properly educated. And the earlier you start, the easier it will be for them to make

sales and thrive as an employee.
