A message from the Director
As we continue to explore the difficultproblem of immigration from our Christianperspective, I offer the views of Pax Christi,Phoenix Chapter members. Pax Christi is theCatholic Peace Organization. I invite all to
the Immigration education session this onSunday June 6th at 9:00 am and 10:45 am in the Fr. Owenroom.
OPEN LETTER FROM PAX CHRISTI PHOENIX ON THE SUBJECTOF IMMIGRATION
Pax Christi Phx members wish to express our concernregarding the challenges posed byimmigration in our community and variousresponses to them.
Holy Scripture tells us to welcome, notharm, the stranger (Exodus22:21;Leviticus19:34; Hebrews 13:1; Matthew
25:34-46). In addition, the Golden Rule, an idea prominentin every faith tradition, makes it perfectly clear that we musttreat others as we would wish to be treated.
While respecting U.S. laws and our elected government,we have a solemn responsibility to ensure that our laws arejust and that officials are acting for the common good. Inour current immigration crisis, it is clear to us that U.S. lawsare not just, effective or moral. It is, therefore, necessary forpeople of faith to speak out on discrimination against ourHispanic sisters and brothers.
Most immigrants travel from Central America and Mexicoto Arizona to work for survival and to provide for theirfamilies. For many years, these workers were free to comeand go, and most of them returned home to Mexico.
Ironically, we need these migrant workers to harvest ourcrops, clean and landscape our homes and businesses, care for our children and fill other jobs which our citizenscannot or do not fill.
To make matter worse, splitting up of families oftenhappens in our governments deportation process. Raidson businesses with undocumented workers have leftchildren to fend for themselves while their parents aredeported. And long time periods are routinely imposed onfamilies wishing to reunite. As Christians, we object to thevery un-Christian manner in which our county, state andfederal governments are treating our sisters and brothers, created and loved by the One God.
Our immigration laws must be changed to allow for legal
immigration of those wishing to live and work here as well asfor the uncomplicated return of workers to their homes aftertheir work is finished.
Pax Christi members, while respecting civil laws, arecompelled to adhere to the higher law of God. We supporthumane treatment of all people and reformed immigrationlaws which accommodate human needs on both sides ofour border, for the good of all.
