“Brilliant” Balloon Challenge Spawns New Club to Train Pilots and Crews

In the wake of Canowindra’s brilliant suc-cess with its first international status Balloon Challenge, organisers have launched a com-pletely new club in association with balloon-ists in Canberra to train a new wave of young pilots, observers and ground crews. Balloon Challenge Committee chair, Arthur Falconer, says the new East Coast Balloon Club will be based in Canowindra and is al-ready raising funds for its first balloon. “We already have $7,500 towards the bal-loon,” Arthur says, “and we’re expecting many thousands more to come in.” His announcement caps the huge success of this year’s challenge and National Austral-ian Balloon Championships which saw com-mercial balloon pilot Matthew Scaife, who runs the Balloons Aloft business with his fa-ther in the Hunter Valley, beat off 26 Austral-

ian and international rivals to take out the title. “It was a brilliant week – Canowindra can hold its head up high,” says Arthur, and not just for the battles in the air. “We found that spectators – 68 vehicles on Tuesday alone -- were now actually following the balloons and learning a lot more about the tests the pilots are put through.” And Arthur paid special tribute to a Uru-guayan girl, Cynthia Navarro, who applied from Melbourne to be an observer then travelled by train to Lithgow, then a lift from Arthur’s wife to Canowindra, spent the week working with the challenge and finally got back home thanks to a lift from a Melbourne crew. That’s how memorable the week was.

LettersDear Editor, It astounds me that our Mayor as quoted in last week’s Age of Fishes Museum article can view council funding of the museum as a ‘drain on council income’. I would have thought that the funding would be viewed by council as money well spent benefiting not just Canowindra but all of the Cabonne Shire. The tourist attraction and consequent financial benefits which flow from having this museum, I suspect, would outweigh the funding costs. If the museum is a ‘world class anthropological attraction’ as stated in the article I would have thought Cabonne Shire would be doing all in its power to main-tain the funding and if needed increase it. It concerns me that the Mayor obviously undermines such an important asset which makes me question his suitability for the po-sition he represents.

RegardsGeoff Yeo

Dear Editor,

What a wonderful place we live. I ask each and every one of you to stop, take a breath and think about the last month. What a com-munity we are, we accepted and embraced celebrities, movie sets and the craziness of the film world. Not to mention volunteered, participated and observed in a wonderful Balloon Challenge. For a small country town we should be very proud of our beautiful town.

Snippets...Don’t drive to hospital – remember in a medical emergency, dial (000) and ask for an Ambulance. Don’t drive yourself or the pa-tient to hospital as you may endanger your life, the patient’s life or members of the pub-lic. Especially in the rural setting, follow these important steps: Call (000) and do not hang up, the call taker needs to gather important information to help the paramedics. Learn First Aid, these skills may help you save a life. Keep a First Aid kit, in your house and car. Teach Your Children, how to call (000). Help us locate you, if possible have someone wait outside your address to guide the Ambulance to the correct location.

When we are in the midst of a hectic day in which we are pulled in so many different directions that we lose sight of ourselves, nothing slows us down and grounds us more than a simple meal and time with our family. Sitting around the table as a family unites us as one, and is an opportunity to recon-nect and unwind. By creating communica-tion and being able to reflect on the events of the day, is important for our health, well-being and for our children. May is here with the promise of a very spe-cial day, Mother’s Day, which is a perfect oc-casion to gather and connect with our family and friends.

Osteoporosis is a condition of the skeletal system in which bones become fragile and brittle leading to an increased risk of frac-tures. Fractures can lead to chronic pain, disability, loss of independence & depres-sion. In 2011-12 726,000 Australians report-ed having osteoporosis. Bone density testing is important for peo-ple at risk of getting osteoporosis or those with osteoporosis. They use X-rays to meas-ure the amount of calcium and other bone minerals in a segment of bone to help assess a person’s risk of breaking their bones. If you feel you need to have a bone mineral density test, please speak to your GP. Maintaining strong healthy bones really is within your power. Brittle bones aren’t necessarily a fate just because you’re getting older. Prop-er diet, regular sun exposure, and weight bearing exercise can help prevent and treat weakening bones. Over the next few columns I will discuss some of the important & easy strategies that you can do to strengthen your bones. So stay tuned! Can’t wait? Please call us on 63441119 and I will organise you a copy of my best tips for strong healthy bones.

Canowindra’s “Rookie” Makes Top 10 Again in Balloon Titles

For one of Canowindra’s favourite sons, Ste-ve Campbell, last week’s Balloon Challenge and national championships proved once again that he has the skills and fortitude to rise to the top of the game. Last year, in his first attempt, Steve was named best rookie. He ended this year’s per-formance eighth in the final standings and justifiably “very happy” to be in the coveted top 10. And he did it as always with a 20-year-old balloon that he’s described as “the equiva-lent of a truck” competing against slim, light-er, high-speed “racers” that champions like Paul Biggs are now using to win events. Steve knows himself what these new racers can do. He borrowed one from another com-petitor and actually beat Biggs in last Octo-ber’s Saga balloon championships in Japan. He’s now about to buy a new balloon, or “canopy,” for his basket, but it won’t be a racer. “They’re too expensive for most balloonists to buy,” he says.

“Also we can only use a racer once a year in Australia, while the Americans have champi-onship events virtually every weekend.” Steve, whose mother Gwen works in Canowindra’s IGA supermarket, has been fly-ing balloons for the past 15 years – drawn immediately to the sport when he first saw balloons soaring and landing at the Sports Oval as a teenager. His wife Amanda now flies with him as navi-gator, and plays a critical role in his rising success. “Amanda’s an expert with the computers we use to navigate with, and I’m not,” he con-fesses. They’re a skilled and dedicated team that we’ll see a lot of in the coming years, as the Balloon Challenge grows as an international ballooning event. Meantime, the couple live in Miranda, Syd-ney, where Steve works as a flight attendant when they’re not both up in the air.

Winter WarmersWith the nights getting darker and the morn-ings getting colder, winter is quickly ap-proaching. Are you ready to keep warm? Do you have a fireplace or a heater? Is it gas or electric? Do you need to organise some chopped wood for the season? Are you in-vesting in solar and saving money on electric-ity? Do you have an electric blanket or piles of flannelette sheets and an extra thick doona? These questions need to be asked because winter can creep up on us, and for people that need to organise gas and wood, you need to be prepared. In the Central West it can get very cold; it can reach freezing point and produce an average of 5 degrees per day in winter. This is because we are a four season climate, in the summer it’s scorch-ing hot, and in the winter its glacial cold with some areas actually producing snow! First of all search locally for some fire wood, unless you venture out to chop wood yourself which you should be thinking of doing now, and keep it in a covered and dry location. If you have a gas heater, test your heater for gas now. You don’t want to be stuck on a freezing cold night without a heater. Make sure you know how to change the set-tings if you have a reverse cycle air condition-er. You don’t want to not know how to change the settings from summer air conditioning temperatures to winter heater temperatures. When it comes to electric blankets you should always listen to your parents “Did you turn your electric blanket off?” – make sure when you get up in the morning that you turn off your electric blanket as they have the po-tential to start a fire. If the electric blanket is as old as the hills, it is probably safest to

invest in a new one. However it’s also time to make sure our beloved warmth-giving appliances are safe to use. Every winter brings stories of dev-astating house fires caused by old heaters, blocked chimneys or faulty electric blankets. We don’t use or store most appliances away during summer and the build-up of dust around heating elements in column and bar heaters, even ducted heating systems, can spark a major blaze. It is very important to get your gas heater serviced or checked an-nually. An unsafe heater can cause a house fire or pollute your home with dangerous fumes. While good old-fashioned wood heaters and fire places may provide warmth incom-parable to electric heaters, they’re also a source of potential danger. Check that your electric blanket is in good condition and make sure it has not been recalled. Do not place heaters to close to furniture items in your home, or place clothes on heaters. Also ensure your fire smoke alarms have had their batteries re-placed.

ChicagoMurder. Greed. Corruption. Violence. Exploi-tation. Adultery. Treachery. Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, CHI-

CAGO is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and would be nightclub dancer who mali-ciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids. Trish Aumuller, Barry Patterson & Jazz Hyde head the very talented cast as Velma Kelly, Billy Flynn & Roxie Hart, who each sing and dance their way through an array of pro-duction numbers featuring some dazzling costumes. They are ably supported by Alan Moxey as Amos Hart (Roxie’s seemingly invisible husband), Cin Jackson as Matron Mama Morton - Queen of the Cook County Jail, Nick Smitch as Mary Sunshine and an Ensemble that sing, dance and tap their way though production number after production number. With a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, CHICAGO is the winner of six 1997 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording. Directed by Bruce Buchanan & Sam Fuda and choreographed by Jamie Key with Amy Coad picking up the Baton as Musical Direc-tor and costumes by Angie Mason CHICAGO features an array of Broadway smash hits one after another. Solemnity, Colour and Celebration at Canowindra’s Anzac Day Event

It’s held every year, and it’s been so for the past 99 years. And even today, the Anzac Day commemo-ration arouses such emotion, such a mix of solemnity, ritual, colour and celebration that its little wonder that today’s younger genera-tions are flocking in increasing numbers to

share the observance. So it was in Canowindra last Friday as pu-pils from the town’s major schools joined the ranks of be-medalled veterans and surviving family members, along with local organisa-tions like the Canowindra Fire Brigade and SES, in the Anzac march down Gaskill Street

to the cenotaph in Memorial Park. There, a crowd of well over 400 people packed the lawns in brilliant sunshine for the main Anzac service which was led by Mike Harrison, President of the RSL Sub. The service consisted of addresses and prayers while uniformed soldiers stood at drill at-tention, heads bowed, weapons pointed to the ground, at the four points of the shrine as local community groups, schoolchildren, businesses and families laid their wreaths in honour of the fallen. First GradeSunday 27th April – Canowindra vs Cargo Canowindra did not let Cargo put them off their game after they scored the first try of the game. Canowindra were able to remain determined as they pushed their way into Cargo’s territory. Fantastic efforts by Canow-indra’s Captain David Bermingham (Moey) as he controlled his team mates and helped guide the tactics for the boys to get over the try line. Half time score was 6 - 4 Canowin-dra’s way. Excellent efforts by all Canowindra players for their extreme consistency with their great defence. An incredible game as Canowindra and Cargo went head to head and fought each other right until the last bell rang. The final result was a 12 all draw. Canowindra would like to thank Cargo for their hospitality and for a great game. Con-gratulations to Kain Earsman for receiving Players Player for his excellent efforts in pushing his team forward. This Week’s Game @ Tom Clyburn Oval Canowindra on Friday 2nd May. League Tag starts at 6.20pm and First Grade starts at 7.20pm.

League TagSunday 27th April – Canowindra vs. Cargo The Cargo team started very strong scor-ing the first try of the game, determined to work for a home win. The Canowindra girls kept calm and were able to turn the game around with a very respectable win of 42 - 12. Canowindra used their fantastic ball skills as their quick passes and determination were able to continually push them over the try line. Their Coach Michael French stated that

the overall score was a very impressive effort for everyone in the team. He would like to thank their Captain Caitlin Walker for a great game, and congratulations to Ashley Mclean for receiving Players Player. Ashley is one of the youngest players for the Canowindra Ti-gers and has incredible potential.

Rugby UnionSaturday 26th April – Canowindra Pythons vs Molong Magpies With yet another huge crowd at the balloon glow it was great to see so many stay around to watch the rugby. With the Pythons having their first hit out for the season, it was always going to be a rusty start. The Magpies where able to start well and got a try in the 14th minute. With Todd Wyburn eventually barg-ing his way through after numerous hit ups at the attack. Dan Middleton converted. Molong were able to put another try on the board to leave the half time score at 12-7. Though our defence was rock solid for most stages of the game, with the Magpies having played 5 trail games this seemed to prove the deference in the final score of 34 to 7. The McClintock’s best and fairest points for the game went to Ben Schafer who got 3, Tim Middleton got 2 and so did Sean Wyburn, and 1 point each went to Dan Middleton and Dean Schafer. This week’s game is at Grenfell with the bus heading over.
