In last month's IT, I noted that a number of working groups were being fanned to give closer attention to particular aspects of the Club's activities. The first of these groups - the Social Programme Working Group - has now been set up. Michael Hansford, Cate Kennedy and Michael Sutton are helping Wendi Johnson to organise speakers for next year's general meetings and to encourage members to arrange a number of additional social events on the Club's programme. These events should be seen as an addition, rather than an alternative, to our regular activities - we are, after all, a walking club, rather than a social club that uses the bush as a venue for some of its activities. Having said that, 1 an aware that there are a number of members who are seeking

opportunities for social interaction outside general meetings and IT collations; There are advantages for the lông term health of the Club if such social events create greater enthusiasm for our activity programme and lead to some of these members becoming more regular walkers.

November General Meeting

Kayaking in South West Tasmania

Chris Bellamy

If you think of canoeing and kayaking as being a form of 'bushwalldng on water', then it is entirely appropriate that the Canberra Bushwalking Club includes these activities in its programme.

The fact that our Club has a more extensive flatwater touring progranmie than either of the two Canberra based canoe clubs is largely

I. due to the efforts of Chris Bellamy. His efforts over the years have introduced many members to the delights of flatwater touring and have also led to a number of paddlers joining our Club and becoming fanatical bushwalkers!

Chris is an experienced kayaker who has completed most of the possible long distance paddle tours in Eastern Australia and is a three-time

veteran of the gruelling Murray Marathon.

At the November General Meeting, Chris will talk about a recent trip to Bathurst Harbour in South West Tasmania. The trip was a stunner, not only for its splendid scenery but also for the complexity of its logistics with the party walking overland to the start of the paddle *hilst its kayaks were transported by yacht from Hobart.

We all met at the gate to the Old Anny Trail at 10:30, the Newcastle lot there at 10:00 after pizza on the go, the Canberra party after a multi course 2 hours plus Chinese banquet at Bathurst. It was decided to just say "David" if you wanted to speak to anyone - save confusion. We camped at foot of Mt Darcy pleasant overcast night, so flies or tents or "Combies" were the order of the

night, slight sprinlde of rain during the dark.

Gradually came awake the sound of birds all around us including the usual Lyre birds practising their bird call lies not too far away. On the go.

b7:30,Ami'èldIiiiily añdgently drove us up the hill to the start point in her HiLux, bit crowded with all the packs and people, but saved an hour or so, and a lot of ssreat, well done Aini. Followed down the ridge 511 578 to the Ovens easy àoing with vestige of track. Wild flowers most beautiful every where many colours and varieties. The Ovens is a large cleared hole" nicely grassed but with a sprinkle of blackberry to dodge.

"Holes" are areas where basaltic plugs intruded through the sand stone and then eroded faster than the sand stone leaving fertile often level based. "holes" in the sandstone plateaus. Theyare mostly blue gum forests in

the nattiral state, truly dèlightfiul spots, (unfortunately often cleared by early settlers for farming and grazing). Also made famous by a number of bush raiging and cattle duffing stories, tales of hidden valleys to secret stock or people.

Onwards down the Ovens creek, bit swampy at the start (easier to walk on the sides of the hill) but soon into creek proper. Mixture of going from eay under rainforèst areas where cieek narrow or east/wesç to bit viny where more open or north/south, to B scrubby and viny in open places like creek junctions often exacerbated by fallen trees (fortunately not too: many). The cieëk" delightful sand 'bottorn reasonably flat eay going banks. Tall cliffs either side in places, wonderful hidden spots.

• I was glad I'd spoken to Ian Hickson who told me what the Ovens creek was like, because I originlly expected a canyony start with much slower going (not from the map but from experience just a little to the west). Ian also told me.of the

• delightful hole opposite Cyril Rock which was to be our camp for tonight. Everyone was moving well taking turns trail blazing/route finding and showing things of

interest frees, plants, flowers, crayfish/yabbies, fungi, overhangs beautiful spots, Theo and Petet showing the largish crayfish with eggs.

Passed my oiiginal, first possible camping spot by 10 am. At side creek 537 541 found a well trodden track that went over the obvious saddle right on the next bend into "The Swampy Bottom Hole". From the top of the saddle Monica and two Davids could see a big yellow and green marquee between the scrub on the grassy slopes.below [but the wee folk had removed it by the time we got down (or was it the leaf the

sighters were èhewing on)]. This is a nice hide possibly cleared in.thç past hut I'm not sure. Base swampy but

good water after it had settled. 4 p.m. camp spread out on flat spots up the hill 545 542, good place to be. Pleasant bird calls, Lyre, Whip, Choughs, Mopoke and some new to me. As would be expected lots of frogs of many calls. Leisurely tea and dinner with much light hearted or ponderous chatter depending on the whim.

Awoke to the drip drip drip of steady drizzle, and the muted call of birds, not the morning for a quick start. Creek bashing in the wet didn't appeal to any one. Eventually plan B up the ridge to Cyril Rock then into the Coorongoobra to a largish camping cave with possible packless side irips. The way up was a bit slower than expected due to a not obvious from the map scrambly bit just before Cyril Rock (but then again not entirely unexpected as I've found the terrain more rugged as you go west). Found way by staying as high as possible and to the right, hand line scramble, then up the daunting looking ramp that David Drohan found (it's ok when you're on it). Lunch at a bend and dip in the road; no longer raining.

Four decided to return to the cars via the trail, while the rest of us headed down the gully. This has a number of short canyon section, needing hand line in places. Eventually we came to a short waterfall into a pool it looked like the rope and descenders, - but fortunately we found a way up a crack onto a ledge and then a way down via a fallen tree (would probably need rope if the tree wasn't there). This is an interesting and pretty route with a reasonable size blue gum forest "hole". For information the next gully north along the road goes much more easily and is attractive too.

The Coorongoobra is always a delight to walk, more rugged than the Ovens and more beautiful (but how do you compare two beauties). Up a side creek to a high vaulted camping cave with sandy floor, by 3:10.

Where every one sick of wet clothes, dried off, had hot tea and then some went for a swiniiwash in the pool with bubbling stopper (bit cool I'm reliably told). Today the bush has been wonderful with lushness and flowers every where, somehow the colour is enhanced in the rain and the drips add gleaming highlights particularly seen on the ridges. This countiy is very rugged with many coloured cliffs everywhere (red, yellow, gray, black, bright green covered in ferns, dark green covered in creepers and rain forest plants). The canyony bits have leg thick "strangler fig" vines/roots growing down the .rocks or dangling in space or twisted together climbing to the sky somewhere above, (it did pass my mind pity about the over use of canyons in the "book", they look so much better with all the moss and ferns, but better to have a few turned into exciting tourist places than them all).

Again a really nice camp chattering, listening to the rain or babbling, stream seeing the shadows cast on the smooth cave walls and glow worms. In the morning Lyre

birds quite close, no rain but scrub still wet. Away by 7:40, up the creek then turn north into the next side creek, drop our pack at the foot of the ramp that leads to the exit ridge, across the Blue Gum forest "hole" and up the gully that leads to Saw Cut Canyon. Wild flowers everywhere and in the gully early crimson red Waratahs as I remember

from a few years ago. Saw Cut is delightful, narrow with ferns and moss then opening into a clam shell overhang, with water raining down from the rounded edges above. Duck under the chock stone and there is the saw cut about 50 ft of very narrow cleft with a 15 ft very narrow waterfall if you wanted to continue.

Back to the packs then round the snout of the ridge and up to the "Cathedral Cave" and the thee short section of canyon with side canyon. Last time we were here two Lyre birds flEw along and across the narrow gap in the roof. Then up onto the ridge beside the ,flen logs, for nibbles and photo stop before the push through the Hakea and Mallee to the top. Of course lunch on the way at the "tables and chairs" so we could admire the grandeur of where we were leaving. Back to the cars by 1:40 for beers or milo, willingly given and gratefully accepted.

This was a really great walk in a great area with great people, we all

Nursery Hill

Wednesday 13 October

Following my retirement a few weeks earlier I decided to sample a mid-week "Wednesday' walk with Allan Mikkelsen and the "geriatrics". I was kindly given a lift to Kambah shops where 9 of us assembled at about 8-30am. There was much debate about where to go. The choice was either Hospital Hill or Nursery Hill from Boboyan Road and the information available suggested that the latter was scrubby but the former was worse. Eventually we settled on Nursery Hill which sounded a little deja vu for me since the last walk I had led was to that same hill - but from the other side.

We drove down to where Nursery Creek crosses the road, parked our cars and started to walk. It was not the leisurely stroll along the swamp that I was used to but quite a serious walk and rock scramble along the creek and '*e were gaining height quite quickly. I soon discovered that while the average age of the group

might be quite high the pace was not slow and at times I was struggling a little to keep up. We continued till and eventually reached the start of Nursery Swamp where the gradient

eased considerably. Then it was decided not to go in along "my" route - up the side creek, to the saddle than along the main ridge from the other side. Instead we start off up the nose of the hill. The going was not to bad nor was it as scrubby as we had feared and before too long we were eating our lunches on a rocky platform very near the top.

After lunch a little exploration located the summit which was not to far away which I soon recognised from earlier trips even though we were approaching from the other side. Soon we were standing on the top admiring the magnificent views. I was able to remark that that was the only time for the day that we were on the same ground as I had covered on my previous trip.

We then started our descent going along the main ridge but in the opposite direction. At first the going was fairly easy and the regular huge rocky outcrops proved a magnet to

Allan and Ray who loved to explore them. However, when the descent began in earnest we finally encountered the scrub we had been warned about. It got thick and in conjunction with the steepness and the rocks made going much slower and more difficult. Eventually we gave up trying to follow the ridge and just tried to pick the easiest route down into the Creek. This was eventually achieved and after much slow progress we found ourselves in Nursery Creek again. We then retraced our steps back to the cars and a reasonably early return to Canberra. This was a new way to Nursery Hill, probably not one I will try again but I am glad to have done it once. A possible variant would be to ascend the way we did, return along the old route past Nursery Swamp and do a car shuffle. I enjoyed my fir st Wednesday walk with the "oldies" and hope it will not be my last.
