In the late 2000's an unprecedented thing happened. A church was planted in one of the most unchurched areas of the country, Seattle, Washington, but what was truly unprecedented is that this church which started with only a few people was running over 20,000 people in only a few years. It was built around the personality of a no-nonsense preacher with a fiery temper and penchant for letting a cuss word slip from the pulpit every now and again. It seemed that his style of being blunt both with his advice and interpretation of the Bible was paving the way for how to grow a church. After several bestselling books and the opening of many campuses, it seemed the sky was the limit for this trail blazing pastor and his megachurch. At least it was until midway through 2014, when it came crashing down. First the pastor was put on leave for various accusations of different sorts, none of which were ever presented as unbiblical. Only a few weeks later it was announced that he had resigned from the church he planted. Finally, only a few weeks after this announcement, it was announced that this church was going to close its doors. This is an extreme example, but what it shows is what happens when a church is based on the personality of a key leader. This could be a pastor or a lay leader, it makes no difference, it is more about level of influence that the leader has for shaping the church. We have seen time and time again that when churches are based on a person when that person leaves, for better or worse, the church suffers. This is because the church has been driven by the leader’s goals and charisma. This was not the plan that Jesus set in place for the church. Yes, the church is shaped around Jesus and His plan and person, but even with this in mind, Jesus gives His followers a different path. You see, Paul late in the New Testament tells what qualities a church leader should have, but they are general and not meant to dictate the specifics of a person. On the other hand, Jesus, as we have seen over the last few months, in the Gospels and at the beginning of Acts tells what the church should look like. Jesus knew that people of different personalities and time periods would come and go but knew that His mission would remain the same. I have talked multiple times of changing the way we look at doing church and this is that change. We are in the process of moving from a personality-or leader-driven model to a mission-driven model. What does this mean? It means that we are taking all of the Scriptures that we have looked at and synthesiz-ing them down to a workable process for the key mission of the church, to make disciples. It means that we will begin shaping our programing and decisions around this discipleship process. By doing this we are focusing in on what Jesus gave us as our mission rather than what I or some other leader may see as important. So what is our process? Belong -> Give opportunities for people to get plugged in (Sunday Mornings & Small Groups) -> Mature -> Once a person belongs they can begin to grow (Wednesday Nights) -> Move -> As people begin to grow they will be presented with opportunities to and be challenged to begin putting in action their new understanding. These will be both in the church and outside. (Mission Projects & Serving in Ministries) Where are you at in the process? Are you still getting comfortable and seeing that you have a place to belong? Are you settled in and need to begin to grow in your walk with Christ or is it time for you step up and begin putting your faith in Christ into action? To a certain degree each of these steps is ongoing, but as we embrace each step, the closer we will be to being mature Disciples of Christ! God is moving! I hope that you will be part of what He is doing here at UCC! Frank
