Society (RCGS) is pleased to present theOttawa premiere of Hobnails And HempRope, a 25-minute documentary about theBugaboo Spire Centennial Climb Project.This Can Geo Talks film event recounts theadventures of four Ontario climbers as theycommemorate the 100th anniversary of thefirst known ascent of BC’s PurcellMountains’ Bugaboo Spire, in July 2016.

“Greg Gransden, director of Hobnails AndHemp Rope and Bryan Thompson,expedition leader, will be on hand to answeraudience questions after the screening. Astunning collection of Ivan Petrov’sexpedition photography will be on display,along with vintage mountaineering gear andresearch materials used on the project.

“Hobnails And Hemp Rope payshomage to the Austrian-Canadian explorerand the Alpine Club of Canada's firstprofessional mountain guide, Conrad Kain,whose team successfully reached theSpire’s summit in 1916, considered

Canada’s golden age of mountaineering. Tocelebrate the Kain expedition, the modern-day climbers used similar gear, food andclimbing equipment to that which wouldhave been used to camp and climb the spire100 years before. The only exception is thevery upper section of the climb, deemed notsafe enough to face today with historic gear.

“Scaling this coveted mountain is noeasy climb. The granite spire rises up to anelevation of 3,204 meters and rests betweenthe Vowell and Crescent Glaciers. Kain'sroute on Bugaboo Spire remained thenation’s most difficult alpine climb up untilthe middle of the 20th century. “The movie’s Swedish-borndirector, Kasper Collin, makesmagic with ingredients that aremagical to start with: a handful ofcontemporary interviews; black-and-white candids of Morgan andsuch friends and colleagues asWayne Shorter, Bennie Maupin,Billy Harper, and Charli Persip; andan audiotape of Helen, soundingold but firm a scant month beforeher death in 1996. Oh, yes, there’s music, lots ofit. If you don’t know Lee Morgan, it will be loveat first listen.

“The events recounted in I Called HimMorgan are elemental, in the world of 20th-

century bebop perhaps evenarchetypal: Morgan’s auspiciousdebut with Art Blakey; hisgrowing fame; the drugs that led

to a burn scar on his scalp from when heOD’ed and fell against a radiator; his rehab and

new life and thenevident feeling ofentrapment; and hisinfatuation with ayounger woman whonow insists to Collinthat Morgan’s‘sexuality was very,very limited.’ Notmuch of the above isfilled in, but it hardlyneeds to be. The

movie is like a record you could spin again andagain. The musicians must be the mostphotogenic men alive – almost every shot evokesa freedom of spirit, a simultaneous relaxationand alertness. Collin supplies a visual motif asconnective tissue: ash, smoke, snowflakes, rain,all of them swirling against winter skies or clubslike Slugs or theapartmentbuilding on theBronx’s GrandConcourse whereMorgan got hischops back. Themovie has theperfectsoundtrack forswirling. It’smesmerizing, toovivid to beevanescent, tooprecious to hold.”

Take debit – it’s 2017.

Our decision not to accept credit or debit cards isn’tbased on some backward-thinking Ludditephiliospophy. It’s based on convenience, or rather onbalancing certain conveniences with otherinconveniences.Yes, we know that it’s inconvenient for you when

you show up, bereft of cash, with so little time beforethe movie starts that a trip to the ATM seems likepunishment. But, as we’ve said before, each andevery electronic transaction takes longer than goodold cash, so accepting cards would mean that wewould be inconveniencing everyone in the queuebehind the plastic-waving patrons. It’s just adifference of 10 or 15 or 20 seconds, but thetransactions add up. No offence, but we’d ratherinconvenience the occasional cash-free patron thanthe dozens of others who have both paper and plasticin their wallets.

You kill the house lights abruptlywhen the main feature begins. Whynot bring them down gradually, withmore elegance and regard forpatrons’ retinas?

We were early adopters of energy-efficient lightingand, sometime back in the 1990s, replaced the 1947fixtures on the auditorium walls with compactfluorescent lighting (CFLs). At the time, the fixturesand bulbs we were able to install did not work withdimmer switches, so those lights are either on, or off.

We’ll change the fixtures again, someday, and whenwe do we’ll keep your retinas in mind.

For special events such as operas,Royal Shakespeare Company, etc, isit necessary to buy tickets previously,or is 30 mins pre-show sufficienttime?

Good question – when we ran the Royal OperaHouse shows a couple of years ago, we did offeradvance tickets. At first, they sold pretty well. Butaudiences quickly learned that there is plenty of roomat the ByTowne (650 seats) and that advance ticketswere not necessary. Advance sales dropped off, eventhough total attendance was increasing. When we

resumed the ROH shows this January (and added theRoyal Ballet and Royal Shakespeare Companyproductions), we decided not to offer advance sales.Getting to the cinema with 15 to 20 minutes to

spare before the posted show time is all you reallyneed to do to make sure you get in. This applies tovirtually every screening at the ByTowne. We sell outfrom time to time, but even when that happens, theonly people to get turned away are the ones whoarrive with less than 5 minutes to go before the showstarts.

How about a guest Wi-Fi network?

Not too surprisingly, we actually don’t want you tobe surfing the internet or checking your texts in the

cinema, so we’re not keen on enabling that. For the 10or 15 minutes before the movie starts, werecommend conversation.

It would be really nice if the durationof each film could be indicated inyour program.

The duration of a movie, or the running time, hasalways been a part of our programme guide andwebsite. We’ve been at this job for so long, though,that sometimes we forget to indicate to our readershow things are formatted. So here’s a refresher.There are two places in the printed ByTowne Guide

where you might find the running time, depending onthe movie.
