Hobnails And Hemp Rope May 25 GREG GRANSDEN Documentary “The Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) is pleased to present the Ottawa premiere of Hobnails And Hemp Rope , a 25-minute documentary about the Bugaboo Spire Centennial Climb Project. This Can Geo Talks film event recounts the adventures of four Ontario climbers as they commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first known ascent of BC’s Purcell Mountains’ Bugaboo Spire, in July 2016. “Greg Gransden, director of Hobnails And Hemp Rope and Bryan Thompson, expedition leader, will be on hand to answer audience questions after the screening. A stunning collection of Ivan Petrov’s expedition photography will be on display, along with vintage mountaineering gear and research materials used on the project. “Hobnails And Hemp Rope pays homage to the Austrian-Canadian explorer and the Alpine Club of Canada's first professional mountain guide, Conrad Kain, whose team successfully reached the Spire’s summit in 1916, considered Canada’s golden age of mountaineering. To celebrate the Kain expedition, the modern- day climbers used similar gear, food and climbing equipment to that which would have been used to camp and climb the spire 100 years before. The only exception is the very upper section of the climb, deemed not safe enough to face today with historic gear. “Scaling this coveted mountain is no easy climb. The granite spire rises up to an elevation of 3,204 meters and rests between the Vowell and Crescent Glaciers. Kain's route on Bugaboo Spire remained the nation’s most difficult alpine climb up until the middle of the 20th century. Jackson “‘The history of America is the history of the Negro in America. And it’s not a pretty picture.’ These words were written by James Baldwin, the African-American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, and fierce social critic. When Baldwin died in 1987, he had finished only 30 pages of his magnum opus on the lives and murders of three of his closest friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. Althought the book never happened, the movie I Am Not Your Negro , directed by Raoul Peck, is alive and kicking ass. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, this chronicle of a long, hard, and ongoing struggle is unmissable and unforgettable. “In archival footage, we see Baldwin, breathing eloquent fire. In his patented uniform of dark suit, white shirt and skinny tie, his hooded eyes flashing, he speaks truth to pissed-off power. Elsewhere, Samuel L. Exiled from his homeland in 1934, yet unwilling to condemn the political forces that turfed him out of tumultuous pre- War Europe, Zweig and his dedicated wife Lotte ricocheted from the U.K. and around the Americas, but were never at ease away from Austria. “Director Maria Schrader doesn’t try to dramatize Zweig at work writing. Instead, she focuses on the author’s interactions with others – some purely ceremonial, others more intimate, all of them revealing – to help suggest something about both his character and his slowly decaying sense of place in the world. But Kari‘s mother doted on him, and he blossomed into a cheerful young man with an unshakeable belief in the beauty of life. “At 20, Kari (played as a young man by Nils Althaus) meets the gentle and beautiful Annemarie (Karla Juri). It’s love at first sight. While other girls had turned away from Kari, Annemarie is enraptured by his outgoing personality. Take debit – it’s 2017.

Our decision not to accept credit or debit cards isn’tbased on some backward-thinking Ludditephiliospophy. It’s based on convenience, or rather onbalancing certain conveniences with otherinconveniences.Yes, we know that it’s inconvenient for you when

you show up, bereft of cash, with so little time beforethe movie starts that a trip to the ATM seems likepunishment. But, as we’ve said before, each andevery electronic transaction takes longer than goodold cash, so accepting cards would mean that wewould be inconveniencing everyone in the queuebehind the plastic-waving patrons. It’s just adifference of 10 or 15 or 20 seconds, but thetransactions add up. No offence, but we’d ratherinconvenience the occasional cash-free patron thanthe dozens of others who have both paper and plasticin their wallets.

You kill the house lights abruptlywhen the main feature begins. Whynot bring them down gradually, withmore elegance and regard forpatrons’ retinas?

We were early adopters of energy-efficient lightingand, sometime back in the 1990s, replaced the 1947fixtures on the auditorium walls with compactfluorescent lighting (CFLs). At the time, the fixturesand bulbs we were able to install did not work withdimmer switches, so those lights are either on, or off.

We’ll change the fixtures again, someday, and whenwe do we’ll keep your retinas in mind.

For special events such as operas,Royal Shakespeare Company, etc, isit necessary to buy tickets previously,or is 30 mins pre-show sufficienttime?

Good question – when we ran the Royal OperaHouse shows a couple of years ago, we did offeradvance tickets. At first, they sold pretty well. Butaudiences quickly learned that there is plenty of roomat the ByTowne (650 seats) and that advance ticketswere not necessary. Advance sales dropped off, eventhough total attendance was increasing. When we

resumed the ROH shows this January (and added theRoyal Ballet and Royal Shakespeare Companyproductions), we decided not to offer advance sales.Getting to the cinema with 15 to 20 minutes to

spare before the posted show time is all you reallyneed to do to make sure you get in. This applies tovirtually every screening at the ByTowne. We sell outfrom time to time, but even when that happens, theonly people to get turned away are the ones whoarrive with less than 5 minutes to go before the showstarts.

How about a guest Wi-Fi network?

Not too surprisingly, we actually don’t want you tobe surfing the internet or checking your texts in the

cinema, so we’re not keen on enabling that. For the 10or 15 minutes before the movie starts, werecommend conversation.

It would be really nice if the durationof each film could be indicated inyour program.

The duration of a movie, or the running time, hasalways been a part of our programme guide andwebsite. We’ve been at this job for so long, though,that sometimes we forget to indicate to our readershow things are formatted. So here’s a refresher.There are two places in the printed ByTowne Guide

where you might find the running time, depending onthe movie. and April, etc. The ByTowne Guide is completed and ‘on the street’ about a week prior to the first day of itsprogramming period (June 22nd or 23rd for July/August, for example).

� Technical RequirementsFinished ads must be prepared to the dimensions given, and submitted as electronic files. One of the most

straightforward ways to do this is to save your finished file as a .tif or .jpeg image file at a resolution of 400dpi or higher. We can also happily use Quark XPress documents (our current version is 11.1), with imagesand fonts included, or Illustrator files (don’t forget to convert your fonts to outlines). PDF: We do NOT accept .pdf documents for final production. Please convert your .pdf files to 400 dpiimage files, CMYK colour mode. Thanks.
