Dear Parents: The 2012-2013 school year has come to an end. It has been a year of transition with two different substitute principals at the helm, but the appointment of Eric Stewart will give the stability that Harmony needs for many years to come. Spending the last six months at Harmony has been my great pleasure. The students here are awesome. I have demonstrated for them the exploding fist pump which is a hearty alternative to the hand shake. It is also a friendly way to say, “Hi.” I have mentored a few students here and hopefully helped them academically and with their middle school journey. Since I have spent most of my years in high school, the middle school is new for me. I find these students to be friendly, sincere and genuine. They embrace life enthusiastically with great energy. Come to the cafeteria at lunch time any day, and you will see what I mean. Parents here are supportive and interested in their children’s education. The PTA is marvelous. Great people who do so much for all the students here. The teacher appreciation week was one of the best I have observed at any school. Thank you so much. This is a strong teaching staff. They are hard-working and dedicated to the education of the students – they take pleasure at their successes and find ways to provide extra help to those who need it. So, the year comes to an end, and we prepare for the next one to begin. Our 8 th grade will attend Woodgrove High School. This is a terrific school that our students will soon call their own. They are the class of 2017, an outstanding group of young men and women. Best wishes to Sherron Gladden as she begins a new phase in her life. She has served LCPS long and well. Best wishes to Eric Stewart who will usher in a new era at Harmony. I have no doubt that it will be a good one. Have a wonderful and relaxing summer. School begins on Tuesday, September 3, 2013. US History students began the 4th quarter by learning about Post WWII America. Next, they studied the decades long Cold War and discussed how Globalization has linked the people of the world by the sharing of information, the expan-sion of trade, and improved technology. The students did an excellent job on their SOLs and worked hard to the very end! Thank you for a wonderful, exciting, and fun-filled year! Good luck next year in 8th grade Civics! Ms. Svens-son and Ms. Piermatteo would like to wish all of our students luck next year in 8th grade, and thank you for a wonderful school year.

Team Eagle

The English classes concluded the year by creating a poetry book and completing their comparison essay for the fourth quarter book projects. Classes combined for a Writers' Tea where each student selected their favorite piece of writing to share with a small group. Science students studied why we need to treat the environment and waterways well (resources and watersheds). Social Studies students end-ed the year with Civil War projects, writing letters and re-searching major battles. Great job on your SOL scores! Please reinforce basic math skills this summer such as, add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, decimals and fractions. Keep the multiplication flash cards handy to keep the skills sharp. While shopping and traveling, have your child figure out the gas mileage, unit rate, scales on maps, etc. What a great way to involve your child in the process as well as understand the practical purpose of math in our everyday lives. Thanks for a fabulous year. You will continue to soar (even though you will no longer be Eagles) throughout the rest of your education.

Team Gemini Math students studied probability (and why gambling is not necessarily a long-term, wealth-building strategy) and graphs. English 7 recovered from SOL tests by reading many great books! The last Book Club for the year was student organized by author, genre, or title. The students chose the books, the groups, the meeting times, and three means of assessment. Many innovative ideas were incorporated into the written Book Club Proposals for approval by Mrs. McGilvray who was impressed! The last writing project began with research into possible careers or colleges. Thanks to Mr. Thomas for his great websites to help get started. History students finished all the wars, both hot and cold, and examined our place in a global society.

Team Hercules

Teaching your students this year has been a blessing! Please have a wonderful and restful summer. In English, students made great strides in their reading and writing over the year. Please encourage them to continue reading and writing over the summer! In Math, “Oh the places we have been,” in math and a rigor-ous year we have experienced. Please reinforce basic skills this summer: addition, subtraction, multiplication and divi-sion of whole numbers, decimals and fractions. Also, keep the multiplication flash cards handy to keep the skills sharp. While shopping and traveling, have your child figure out the gas mileage, unit rate, scales on maps, etc. What a great way to involve your child in the process as well as understand the practical purpose of math in our everyday lives. History students had a wonderful year learning all about our United States! Please continue to point out the history that lies all around us here in our beautiful Virginia. Science students completed their Energy Resource unit and moved onto Watersheds. We also had a wonderful time with "Junk Box Wars", a fun, yet educational end of year activity!

PAGE 11

Team Scorpion English classes completed poetry notebooks and wrote an essay based on their independent read-ing. Remember to READ over the summer! His-tory students composed Civil War letters from a soldier’s perspective. Science students completed units on energy resources and watersheds. Math students should practice skills throughout the summer by adding up grocery receipts to review addition and subtraction of decimals. They should also play with measuring cups to reinforce fraction concepts. All Team Scorpion students should be VERY proud of their hard work and success!

Team Orion Our great school year quickly came to a close. In Civics class, students finished the last of the eco-nomics unit focusing on fiscal and monetary policy. After the final unit test, they dug deeply into the bag of knowledge and reviewed many of the topics covered with fun activities involving lots of thinking and sharing. Students ended the year with a bang in science! Their movie trailers and songs will be a hit with the rising 8th graders next year. Team Orion said goodbye to English class by sharing their writing in our class coffeehouse. Our writers made Harmony proud by publish-ing in the local newspaper, 8th grade Literary Magazine, and the inter-net. Enjoy a great summer of reading and good luck at Woodgrove!

Team Taurus Taurus teachers would like to thank all students for their hard work - right up until the end of the year! In English, students shared their final writing pieces at a coffeehouse, and went through an intensive self-evaluation process. In science, students presented final projects and voted on the winners. In civ-ics, students practiced media literacy by exam-ining National Treasure for its historical and civic connections. We hope all of our students have a wonderful summer and enjoy Woodgrove in the fall.

Team Phoenix Team Phoenix wants to wish everyone a wonderful, safe, and enjoyable summer. We feel lucky to have worked with you and your children, parents, and we wish you all the best in your future endeavors. We want to you to keep all of your class activities, the teambuilding field trip to the Madeira School, and our day at the Purcellville Skating Rink as positive so you will have fond memories upon which you can always look back with pride. Best wishes to you as you become freshmen at Woodgrove High School! Come back and visit us often!

The Team Phoenix Teachers (Mr. Cassutto, Ms. Yearwood, and Ms. Banasik)

Team Ursa Major

US History II class ended the year by revisiting the World War II unit. Students watched The Diary of Anne Frank and discussed Anne's two year life in hiding. Many students were skeptical that they would like a 1959, mostly dialogue, black and white movie, but after 10 minutes, the students were riveted. Life Science students ended the year with the most memorable labs - dissections! The optional use of mobile devices during dissections was add-ed, and students used them for assistance through the earthworm and frog dissections. In Language Arts, students presented the year-ending career/major/college project. They re-searched a reasonable goal for after graduation from High School by exploring and learning about their options with respect to either a career path, college education, or a combination of both. Stu-dents researched on the internet and conducted an interview with someone who has “been there.” After the students worked hard to complete their J-labs, it’s a relief to have the SOL tests over for the year. The 2012-2013 school year was amazing. It has been so rewarding working with an excellent class of students! They will be missed and will do extraordinary things in 8th grade. Enjoy summer.

If there are any problems or changes that need to be made, please make the corrections on the letter and return it to Harmony Middle School counseling department as soon as possi-ble. There will be NO changes after June 20, 2013. MOVING? If you are planning to move or withdraw your student from Harmony, Please contact us at 540-751-2500. Expunging of High School Grades and Credits Based on a provision of the Virginia Standards of Accreditation, a middle school student who has taken a high school course while in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade (such as Algebra 1; Geometry; or a foreign language) may elect to have the grade expunged from the high school records, and then, if desired, take the course again. Strong consideration should be given for expunging low grades in credit-bearing courses. The student’s grade point average and class standing will not include the grade from the expunged course, nor will the stu-dent receive a credit toward graduation for this course. This course will remain on the middle school transcript; however, the course will not appear on the high school transcript. Only credits which appear on the high school transcript will count toward a high school diploma. Please be advised that this decision to expunge the grade is irreversible and must be made by August 15, 2013. The form for requesting to expunge a grade will be included with your child’s report card. Please note that repeating a course DOES NOT expunge the course and grade. The expunge form needs to be completed. Example if a student took Algebra 1 in 7th grade and decided to repeat it in 8th grade, the 7th grade course will need to be expunged. * If you have questions regarding this provision and how it relates to your child, please call your child’s counselor.

Ink Cartridge

Recycling

Don't forget our printer ink cartridge recy-cling program over the summer! We take any ink jet or laser jet cartridge, as well as cell phones. We have used these monies in

the past to purchase extra technology equipment and com-puter project supplies for our school. Save them over the summer and bring them to school in August! Thank you!

@ the library

Thanks to our Parent Volunteers We would like to say a special thank you to our fabulous parent volunteers Deanna Heinze, Kathy Brown, and Wendy Bye who have spent many hours shelving books in the Harmony library. We appreciate the time and effort you have so graciously given us. Summer Reading Challenge Summer is a great time to read so we are sponsoring a Sum-mer Reading Challenge!! Students are challenged to read FIFTEEN books in any genre category throughout the sum-mer. Rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders who turn their book chart into the library at the beginning of the new school year will receive special prizes. The Summer Reading Challenge book chart can be found on Harmony’s website and can be printed at home. Also, check out the Reader Resources page on Harmony’s Library Webpage for lists of various book titles. Enjoy a sum-mer full of reading!!! End of Year Close-Out After 35 years in Loudoun County Schools, Mrs. Price has decided to retire at the end of this school year. We bid a fond farewell to her as she has been our librarian since Harmony opened in 2002. May you be as blessed as you have been a blessing to so many throughout the Harmony family and com-munity!

From the School Nurse

As we get ready for a relaxing summer, just a thought on the next school year. If your child will need to take medi-cations at school, please obtain the “medication at school” form from the LCPS website, www.lcps.org. Parents can start to bring medication to school beginning August 22, 2013. Over the counter medications can be authorized by a parent. All prescription medications will need to be au-thorized by the physician. Remember, students are not allowed to carry any medication to or from school. If your child has a medical concern that you would like to discuss with me, please e-mail me at

[email protected] or call the Harmony Clinic at 540-751-2504. I will be available beginning Au-gust 22, 2013 Have a great summer. Kathie Mills, RN, NCSN

TRIBUTE TO SHERRON GLADDEN

Sherron Gladden was honored on Friday, June 7th by the staff of Harmony Middle School, her family and her dear friends. Among the guest speakers were Dr. Hatrick, Superintendent of LCPS; Barbara Nichols, director of Middle Schools; Priscilla Godfrey, former school board member; Wayne Griffith, retired principal; and Wendall Fisher, Supervisor of Outreach Programs. Attending were coworkers from the schools where Sherron has worked during her 27 years of ser-vice to LCPS; Broad Run High School, Potomac Falls High School, Seneca Ridge Middle School and Sterling Middle School. Gifts were presented by the Harmony SCA, PTA and faculty. Sherron was very gracious in her closing speech, recognizing that it is the teamwork of all that determine the success of a school and its students. We wish Sherron the best and hope she enjoys retirement!

SPECTRUM SIGNS OFF!

This year has been full of exciting experiences on all levels for our Spectrum students. The 6th and 7th grades completed their economics project entitled “Pencil Company.” Students created and managed their own business from start to finish. First investing through the purchase of stock, then making it profit based on pencil sales with unique slogans and logos, this simulation taught them much in the way of the American entrepreneurial system. After salaries and commissions were paid out, the company members decided to give back to their community through a 10% donation of the profits to Team Mathias, recognizing the need to give back to the community that helped to make them a success! At the same time the business venture was in progress, our 8th grade Spectrum students were busy building a roadway system in an imaginary place called Rainbow Bay! They were able to experience firsthand, the constraints involved in working in and around a community. Trying to preserve en-dangered plants and animals found along the Appalachian Trail added to the difficulties they encountered throughout the simulation. Congratulations go out to all our Continental Math League winners. The competition was stiff and all deserve kudos for their continued participation in the program. The International Continental Mathematics League Math Competition is made up of five math meets, with each meet requiring the student to solve six math problems in 30 minutes without a calculator! Harmony competes in the Pythagorean division and has teams in each grade level. The following students received recognition for their outstanding performance: 6th grade CML: 1st: Junker, Calle with a score of 23/30 2nd: Smith, Ryan with a score of 21/30 3rd: Forsyth, Carson with a score of 21/30 7th Grade CML 1st: Berlik, Emerson with a score of 20/30 2nd: Franklin, Emily with a score of 19/30 3rd: Beisler, Jack with a score of 16/30 4th: Hill, Kaitlin and Vasta, Bridget with a score of 15/30 8th Grade CML 1st: Abhi Mogili with a score of 21/30 2nd: David Zhang with a score of 20/30 3rd: Patrick Ramsey with a score of 19/30 4th: Josef Zimmerman & Sarah Snare with a score of 18/30

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND

Harmony Middle School’s Odyssey of the Mind team placed 3rd in the Spontaneous portion of the World’s com-petition in Michigan and 9th overall out of 53 teams in their division!!! Job well done team! Congratulations, James Cromwell, Sean Hallissey, Ellyse Morris, Patrick Ramsey, Joe Warndorf, Molly Warndorf, and David Zhang! We are very proud of all of you! Way to represent Harmony Mid-dle School!!! Thank you to everyone who came out to spirit nights and contributed to help get the team to the World’s Competition. A special thank you to the Harmony PTA, SCA, and Dr. Markley for your generous support.

SPECTRUM SIGNS OFF!

(continued0

Teaching Spectrum for the third Harmony Middle School year, I now have had my first group of three year veter-ans. I will miss them greatly and look forward to hearing wonderful things from their respective high schools. Har-mony has continued the strong tradition of excellence in gifted education that has been prevalent throughout the county with outstanding honors courses and advanced math options. The Spectrum program would like to thank all those teachers, administrators and parents for their support this year and hopefully continued support into the next. Here’s to a fabulous 2012-2013 school year! Have a safe and fun filled summer break!

Keyboarding Class Project

Mr. Schoenfeld’s keyboarding classes worked through a business documents unit in which students learned about the parts, purpose, and formatting of memorandums, busi-ness letters, personal business letters, and MLA Re-ports. For the final personal business letters, students wrote a letter to their favorite celebrity. The letters were mailed, and the first two responses were to Mark Belmonte who wrote to the Washington Nationals and Brett Rittner who wrote to the Washington Capitals.
