HOPPING is vital ifwealth is to return toBarnsley and itstown centre.

Before the demise of themining industry, it is estimatedthat about £6.5m a week wasbeing injected into the localeconomy.

The pits and the companieswhich supported them wouldpay wages to workers. The wivesof the workers would spendsome of that in shops and otherplaces like hairdressers. Theirchildren would regularly go toplaces like the cinema.

An estimated £6.5m a week is aheck of a loss and I realise thatall of it will never return. But weshould be doing something toget some of that back.

One way of creating wealth isto attract bigger companies.When the bosses of larger firmsare considering moving to atown, they look at things in theround. They want the rightleisure facilities, the right schoolsand the right shops.

Retailers will only move toplaces where they think therewill be customers so a key toreviving the town centre is topersuade more people to visit.

During the run-up to lastChristmas, special weekendevents were held to lureshoppers. The Mall Barnsleyestimated that it had about

9,000 extra people passingthrough it on each of the dayssomething was happening. Thatis a fantastic response.

A recent visit to PenistoneGrammar School was achastening experience. Theyoungsters hardly thought aboutvisiting Barnsley town centre.

Prices are competitive yet theyand their parents say they find itjust as easy to go to Leeds orMeadowhall as it is to come andpark in Barnsley.

If you take Huddersfield Roadas a middle point, people wholive to the west in places such asPenistone, Cawthorne andSilkstone probably earn 30 or 40per cent more than those livingin Monk Bretton, Lundwood andRoyston.

We need to attract more ofthose on higher salaries who donot shop here.

I will wager that many peoplewill not have heard of anorganisation called The Voice. Itis made up of people who liveand work in Barnsley towncentre who lobby to make thingsbetter.

The Chamber has becomeinvolved and there are nowabout 37 representatives ofretailers, firms, schools, colleges,the council and otherorganisations. It is open toothers, with the town centre’sbest interests at heart, to join.

The rebuilding of the towncentre has been put on holdbecause of the recession. But wecannot wait until economicconditions ease and the banksstart lending again.

We need a vibrant and dynamicshopping centre for when bettertimes return and when thetransformation of the towncentre begins.

We are looking for ideas forevents which will draw shoppersto Barnsley and will set the towncentre apart from elsewhere.

The experience in the run-up tolast Christmas proves that peoplewill visit Barnsley if there issomething happening.

We do not want shoppersswanning off to Leeds orMeadowhall.

No blown gasketsas company sealsdomestic deals

urnover of asupplier of mouldedseals, gaskets andinsulation productshas risen by about£1.2m.

SPG Ltd at Oakwell BusinessPark, off Pontefract Road, haswon a deal worth about£150,000 to supply gaskets tothe chemical companySygenta in Huddersfield.

It has also secured a£100,000 contract with BritishEnergy at power stations.

Managing director SimonNoble said one of the reasonsfor the 57-employee firmhaving a good year wasbecause the market fordomestic boilers was‘recession proof’.

The firm’s clients include themakers of boilers.

Mr Noble said the company

hoped to target companies inthe chemicals and petro-chemicals industries in centralScotland and on the Humberestuary.

About a year ago, SPG was

bought by the Eriks Group. The Dutch company had

acquired another UK businesscalled Wyco, a supplier ofindustrial equipmentincluding hydraulics andbearings.

It needed to buy a maker ofgaskets and bought SPG aftera nationwide search for apartner.

Mr Noble said the takeoverhad increased the chance ofSPG adding to its portfolio ofcustomers.

Eriks Group has about 78branches in the UK andmanages the stores of anumber of businesses.

SPG was set up in Sheffieldin 1971 as Seals, Packings andGaskets and spent a numberof years at Shaw Lane until1997 when it moved toOakwell.

A WOMBWELL teenager has setherself up as a personal trainer.

Lisa Lockwood, 19, runs acompany called Pure PT and goes tothe homes of women.

She said she preferred to travel tothe homes of customers becausewomen tended to be wary of, andfeel intimidated by, male-dominatedgyms. The setting up of the businesshas been the culmination of anexciting year for Lisa.

She is a former Wombwell High

pupil and completed her A-levels atWath Comprehensive in thesummer. In September 2009, shewent on a six-week course run bythe European Institute of Fitness atJuvea, north of Benidorm.

“It was the best six weeks of mylife,” she said. “The courses in thiscountry are not as intensive as theyare in Spain. I learned a lot.”

Lisa is also running a ladies’ circuitfitness class on Tuesdays at TempleGym, Station Road, Wombwell.

A FIRM has organised acharity dinner to markwinning its one millionthcustomer.

The Blue Square Group atShortwood Business Parkbetween Birdwell andHoyland will hold the event inmid-April at a venue to beannounced.

sport are expected to attend.The group also trades as

Soars of Barnsley and DigitalWorld and fits satellite TV,audio-visual and otherequipment.

Boss Steve Soar, who runsthe company with his wifeSara, said: “Every businessfaces challenges but we havealways stayed calm. We see

Mr Soar grew up in Stairfootand lives in Darfield.

After school, he worked athis father’s company, C Soarand Son, off Grange Lane. Hewas a foreman for about 12years and decided on achange of career after hisfather retired.

AN INVESTMENT company for firmshas moved to Capitol Court,Dodworth, bringing the jobs

created to more than 400.Yorkshire Finance has taken half a floor

of the office block known as One CapitolCourt. About 40 people will work there.

Late last year, the seventh and finaloffice or factory built speculatively wasleased.

The last office has been taken bySheffield Children’s Hospital which isusing it as a base from which to takepatients to and from appointments.

The centre employs about 30 andopened at the end of last year. Fourambulances, administrative, clinical andsupport staff are at the centre.

Martin Croxen, chief executive of thebusiness park’s developers Stirling Capitol,said he was delighted.

He said: “We are happy to have securedthese two lettings during difficulteconomic times. It is fair to say we havenever experienced the massive booms and

busts in Yorkshire that have happened inother parts of the country.

“We have been getting a reasonablelevel of sound enquiries for Capitol Park.”

Sterling Capitol has a policy of onlyrenting floor space and Mr Croxenbelieves this has acted as a cushionagainst the worst of the recession.

He added: “The renting-only policy hasmeant lower costs for companies wantingnew office space. That is great at a timewhen money is tight.”

The 36-acre business park, which hascost about £60m, is capable of creating atotal of 1,200 jobs.

Over the last 18 months, a 120-bedRamada Encore Hotel and a Toby Inncarvery have created work for 60 people.

Others who have moved to Capitol Parkinclude the Christy Group which madehats for Sir Winston Churchill and BusinessLink Yorkshire which advises and helpsfirms.

A 250-space park and ride scheme hasbeen earmarked for the site. Factories,

which have gone up have ranged from2,000-sq ft to 8,000-sq ft and offices from4,000-sq ft to 30,000-sq ft. Offices werebuilt by the regeneration specialistsPriority Sites.

Further business accommodation isbeing offered through agent ChrisRowlands and property consultancyKnight Frank.

The scheme was backed by £2.65m ineconomic aid from Europe. Thedevelopers have worked closely withRenaissance South Yorkshire, theredevelopment agency Yorkshire Forwardand Barnsley Development Agency.

Capitol Park was built at about the sametime as the Dodworth Bypass which issaid to have provided better links to thetown centre, Manchester, Leeds andSheffield. Sterling Capitol specialises inproviding business parks next tomotorways and other major roads.

Its developments include Capitol Park,Thorne, and Capitol Park, Leeds, whichhave created a total of 2,500 jobs.
