On behalf of the Nottingham branch, can I thank everyone involved for yet another fantastic fundraising event. Good Bye and Thank You for the Past 28 Years! Jane Connell, our Regional Care and Development Advisor has sadly left the Association after 28 years of dedicated service. Many of you will have met Jane who has given amazing support to people affected by MND, their families, volunteers and health and social professionals. We will miss Jane so much but hope that she will continue to support our branch in the future. Kim Iliffe will be slowly replacing Jane over the next few months. We very much look forward to welcoming Kim to our Second Thursday meetings and other events. Godfrey asked three questions:- 1. Can anyone remember a time when Jane wasn’t there? 2. Who was the first person from the MNDA who really impressed you? 3. How much will she be missed? The answers are:- No, Jane and Enormously! Jane Connell is an institution. If she were on TV, she would be regarded as a National Treasure. No one could fail to be impressed with her warm and bubbly personality or the experience of over two decades as a health care professional that she brought to her vocation. She was a good friend of the Nottinghamshire Branch and was a great supporter of our “Second Thursday” support group. Everyone was especially delighted to see Jane when she was able to attend our meetings. So much more could be said by all her friends, but they would all boil down to two comments: Thanks for everything Jane and we’ll miss you. Treasurer’s Report It has been yet another very successful period for donations since the last Bulletin. We have received donations totalling over £5,200, including £1,455 as the first instalment from this year’s Eric Gibson Golf Day, £850 from the Gray Trust, £851 from the Old Meeting House in Mansfield, £450 from the sale of a mobility scooter and £442 from a bucket collection at Doncaster Races. We have also received £1,950 in memoriam. As usual, can I say a huge “thank you” to everyone concerned with all these fundraising activities your efforts are really appreciated and will make a huge difference to our ability to help local people with MND as well as enabling us to make a contribution towards research into this terrible disease. Since the last Bulletin, I am pleased to say that we have been able to make grants of £984 to local people living with MND, as well as subsidising our very successful “Second Thursday” Summer Outing on the River Trent. If I could just emphasise that if anybody living with MND has a requirement for financial support from the Branch, then could they please contact our new MND Regional Care Development Advisor, Kim Iliffe ([email protected]). We are always open to any reasonable request for support. The 49 Club was won by Celia Knight in May, Catherine Angus in June and Jenny Elston in July. Congratulations to you all. PS. Christmas Quiz

This year our Quiz night will be on Thursday 11th

December at the 1865 club at the Nottingham Forest Football Club. The doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Our Quiz Master Simon Fotheringham will compere the evening. Everyone is very welcome for what is always a fun night.

A Grand Day Out

I suppose that “Second Thursday” should be technically called an MND Support group, but it’s so much more than that. If we were to describe it as a friendship club for people who have something in common, then we are beginning to get nearer to the heart of what makes “Second Thursday” such a success and what makes those attending such a special group of people.

Never was this better illustrated than when the idea of a 3 hour riverboat trip on the river Trent was suggested. This was instantly approved of, and in no time at all we had filled the 40 seater boat called “The Trent Lady” and Aug 4th was booked as the date of our outing.

After much crossing of fingers for the weather, the day was blessed with blue

skies with the

occasional white fluffy cloud. The superb weather matched the high spirits of those on board as they set sail.

En route we sailed under the iconic Trent Bridge and went alongside the Nottingham Forest Football club, in addition to many local landmarks, all passing us by at the lazy pace of 2 miles per hour,

On board we enjoyed a 3 course carvery with all the trimmings, whilst an on board entertainer serenaded us with some golden oldies. In-between the songs, the only noise was that of happy chatter from the passengers as they caught up with the latest from old and new friends alike.

Never have 3 hours gone so quickly, before we knew, we were safely moored and disembarking, looking forward to a refreshing cuppa at home. As we said our goodbyes we reflected that Wallace and Grommet would probably call it “A Grand Day Out”. And so it was.

The MND Ice Bucket Challenge

What is the Ice Bucket Challenge all about and why are all these people doing it? The Ice Bucket Challenge has taken the world by storm and you can get involved too! Soak yourself in ice cold water to support people living with motor neurone disease.

What started in America has now spread to the UK, where celebrities including David Beckham , Tom Hiddleston and Britney Spears have been iced in the name of MND (or ALS as it is known in the US). Grab a bucket of ice-cold water and pour it over your head in exchange for a text donation to the MND Association. Film it and then share it via your social media using #icebucketchallenge and #MND.

Nottingham is also getting a slice of the ice cold action with Nottingham Forest’s Dexter Blackstock, Chris Cohen and Forest’s owner Fawaz Al Hasawi taking part and members of the Nottingham Panthers. Simon Fotheringham our Vice Chairman (above) braved the chill, his video can be viewed on the Notts branch Facebook site. Simon also was interviewed on BBC Radio Nottingham’s Mark Dennison’s show on Friday 22nd August (listen again on our website) to discuss this challenge which has swamped social media in the past few weeks.

How to donate: Visit our Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/mndassoc Text ICED55 followed by an amount (such as £5) to 70070 or call 01604 611860 referencing the 'Ice Bucket Challenge'

An audience with John O’Hare.

On Wednesday 10th September at 8.30pm John O’Hare, Former Nottingham Forest and Scotland centre forward will be interviewed live at The Greyhound pub in Arnold. Tickets cost £5 from behind the bar or you can email Simon Fotheringham and all proceeds go to the Nottingham branch.

the Doncaster Races.

Thank you to Rob Taylor of the Construction Index for orchestrating this opportunity for us. We raised £442.

Mark Bowers Motorcycle Tour

During June (MND Awareness month) this year, Mark Bowers visited all the MND care centres in the UK and Northern Ireland. It was a road trip of around 2,000 miles. Mark arrived at the QMC on the

24th June at 6.30pm. Lots of people turned up to wish Mark well and sign his bike. According to Mark’s Just Giving website he has raised over £5,000. Many thanks to Donna Young our Regional Fundraiser for helping to organise the event.

More Donations Jenny Elston, our branch contact received a cheque from the Treasurer of the Unitarian Chapel in Mansfield.

Julie Lee whose father had MND suggested that the church should raise money for the Association in his memory. They raised over £850 which is excellent! A huge thank you goes out to them for their support.
