Notes from the President

A Santa Fe Tradition since 1865

www.santafeconcertband.org

This is one newsletter that I am very happy to complete.

In this issue we thank all of those who participated in the Ride for the Band Event including the Ride itself, a Silent Auction and a Raffle. This year was our 6th Annual Ride for the Band.

The official start and finish was at Santa Fe Community College. Riders pedaled either 25, 50, or 100 miles. For more information about the “Ride” go to www.RideForTheBand.com .

Overview of the three components of the event.

Raffle: We sold over 750 raffle tickets and awarded 45 prizes having a total value of $3303.00! Congratulations to the winners - all have been notified. We are very grateful to everyone who bought raffle tickets to the tune over $3,000.00.

Cyclists: Five (5) cyclists rode for the band on Sunday May 20 along with an estimated 2500 cyclists riding the Santa Fe Century. It was a beautiful day except for some terribly strong head winds estimated at about 30 mph. These cyclists and their sponsors raised more than $1100.00.

Silent Auction: Income of just over $1,776.00.

In addition to the cyclists, lots of volunteers including 34 from the band, members and their spouses. Dave Nelson, member of the Century Committee, did the drawing of the raffle tickets and he also supplied the electric generator. I am grateful to my wife Chantal whose assistance is essential for me not only at the event but prior with lots of details. The volunteer service was GREAT and the income from the event helps the band continue its mission - free concerts with volunteer musicians.

Sponsors for the Ride for the Band event donated a little more than$700.00; Ultimate Eye Care, Second Street Brewery, Del Norte Pharmacy and guy named Paul Pease who is addicted to cycling and playing his horn. I love the band and the event - it has worked well for 6 years now!

Band Member of Note S T A C C A T O

Welcome New Members

Cathy Wizner has joined the Clarinet section.

Ned Snow now plays alongside the Trumpets.

Max Heckard brings his Baritone horn to add his talents

Mark Alexander grew up on Lake Michi-gan in Evanston, Illinois and has called Santa Fe home for just over a year. He andhis wife Sharon are really enjoying it here -- “great art, great music and wonderful food.”

After earning degrees in music and English from Miami of Ohio and an MBA from Loyola in Chicago, Mark spent forty-five years in the apparel industry in Chicago, New York and St Louis. He wrote advertising, created marketing plans and ran a design and development team. His last employer, Aquarius, LTD, made fashion accessories for Target, Walmart, Sam’s, Macy’s, Nordstrom’s and many other retailers. He made more than 30 trips to Asia on business.

An all-around trumpet player, he performed with band, orchestra, jazz band, jazz combos and Broadway musicals. Mark has also done arranging and composing. He had stopped playing in his mid 20s, “when life intervened.” But he picked up the trumpet again when he retired to Santa Fe

In addition to playing in the SFCB, Mark is also tutoring English as a second language and math at Santa Fe Community College. He also plays in the Santa Fe Recorder Ensemble and takes trumpet lessons to rebuild his lip and “jazz head”.

What Mark likes about playing with SFCB, he says it’s great making music with great people and finds it fun to focus again on music. He also thinks the Director and support staff are amazing.

When asked about family, Mark adds that his 34-year-old daughter Ariel is a jazz saxophonist in Orange County, CA. She is Professor of Music Technology at Saddleback College  and also arranges for TV, movies and big name pop music acts.  “She has the musical talent in the family,” he adds modestly. His 38 year-old-son Noah is the entrepreneur in the family.  His company, Classic Car Studio, builds custom cars in St. Louis. Noah has a show on the Velocity Network called “Speed is the New Black.”

A Few Chuckles:

Q: What do trumpet players and pirates have in common? A: Terror on the high seas!

Q: How do you make a trumpet sound like a French horn?A: You stick your hand in the bell and play all the wrong notes.

Q: What’s the difference between trumpet players and government bonds? A: Government bonds eventually mature and earn money.

Q: Do you play Trumpet Voluntary?A: No, my parents made me do it.

You get a great feeling after a great bike ride, it can be tiring but well worth the effort. And youʼre lucky when you find a little shade.
