Term 1 Enrichment Day

By Meerab Shahzad, P-6 Student Leader

Enrichment Day on the 22nd of March. The day started off with an introduction by Jeremy Hall.

Following that, Keryn McMaster the professional swimmer came and gave a talk about how she got into swimming, some healthy things that we should be doing and some other information about herself and the commonwealth games. Her talk was full of useful information and we got to learn more about her. After that we had morning tea and some time to catch-up with our friends and teachers.

To finish of the day the year 6’s did art and STEM activities. Thank you to all the year 6 teachers for arranging this enrichment day. All the year 6’s had a wonderful time and we can’t wait for the next one!

Cross Country

By Penelope Hudson, Junior Secondary Student Leader, Year 8 BrisbaneSDE Student

On Friday, the 27th of April, students, teachers and parents gathered at the school oval for BrisbaneSDE’s Cross Country Day. The grade 4 – 12 ran 1.8km and 3km races while the P-3 students ran 400m and completed an obstacle course. Joseph, one of the students who attended said “it was also really good to catch up with friends that I only hear in class” and “The race was really fun because I could see some of my teachers along the way”. “Throughout the day I enjoyed watching the other grades race and racing myself. The teachers at the checkpoints were very encouraging and supportive” said James, another student who attended. Congratulations to everyone who participated and thank you also to all the teachers and staff that organised and ran the event.

ANZAC Day Mackay March

By Dominic McCarthy, School Captain, Year 12 BrisbaneSDE Student

On Anzac Day, Wednesday 25th April, I represented BrisbaneSDE at the Mackay March. Over 5000 local students from different schools gathered in the city centre to participate in the parade. As the School Captain of Brisbane School of Distance Education, I laid a wreath in the main ceremony, following the march. The community gathered to pay their respects. It was an honour to be able to represent the school and acknowledge all men and women who have served Australia and fought for our nation's freedom.

French Film Festival

By Cecilia-Marie, Year 11 BrisbaneSDE Student

On Thursday 15th March, the year 10 and 11 French students had the amazing opportunity to go and experience the wonders of the French world through a film and some delicacies organised by Madame Thomas and Madame Derouet. The day started off when with much excitement we met at the “Palace Centro Cinema” in Brisbane City at 9.45am. The atmosphere was full of excitement and it grew to a height when we all moved into the cinema along with the other 120 other children from different schools. “La mélodie” (or “Orchestra Class”) was about a little boy who had a great love for music, and how his teacher formed him into a model, hardworking and excellent violin player. After much hard work and long hours of practice on the rooftop of a Paris apartment their hard work paid off and they were given the chance to perform at the concert in which the violinists played amazingly. After exiting the cinema, we then walked to the park to enjoy the most delicious French pastries! There was quiche Lorraine and /or some Mediterranean vegetarian pie and some cake (flourless chocolate, passion fruit, vanilla, raspberry). The fun-filled day began to end, and the group steadily became smaller and smaller as each student began to depart. The day was a great experience and made us almost feel like we spent a day in France.

Senior CampReflections from Students

Victoria Saffuri, Year 11 BrisbaneSDE Student

“I really enjoyed camp, meeting up with all my past friends was very enjoyable. The activities were different but all so much fun. I was also able to meet some new friends which was very exciting. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to do Year 11 camp with, it was one of the funniest weeks I have ever had. Can’t wait to go on camp again next year in Year 12!”

Chelsea, Year 12 BrisbaneSDE Students

“Camp was a great experience to spend time with friends I already had and with new friends. It was so weird not having technology around. Just our camp group and nature. It was so peaceful! We got to canoe out to our camping location, go on a giant swing and paddle out to a stunning water hole!  The activities were fantastic but the people who came were what made it so special.”

On Wednesday 23rd May, the Student Council held the Australia's Biggest Morning Tea event at BrisbaneSDE. Many teachers came down to the lawn area to support the cause and enjoy lots of delicious food over a tea or coffee. It was great to have the two school captains attend the event along with other students and parents. Overall, the BrisbaneSDE community raised $369.30 for the Cancer Council, to support their research and organisation. Well done!

Ballet Lesson with Renowned Male Contemporary Choreographer

By Caitlyn Whitfield, Year 11 BrisbaneSDE Student

With Adam Blanch being one of the most well-known contemporary choreographers around the world, having a private pas de deux coaching session with him was an opportunity of a lifetime. Dominic and Caitlyn, BrisbaneSDE students who are dancers from Mackay, enjoyed the coaching session immensely and gained valuable knowledge about correct partnering techniques. What an amazing experience!

Queensland Ballet High School Work Experience Residency

By Dominic McCarthy, School Captain, Year 12 BrisbaneSDE Student

The Queensland Ballet High School Work Experience Residency program ran from Monday 28th May to Friday 1st June 2018 at the Thomas Dixon Centre. Ten students were selected for the program got the chance to experience first-hand, the daily operations of a world class ballet company. It was a fantastic week - from panel discussions, presentations, ballet history & repertory workshop class, building tour, watching the Academy students, QPAC backstage tour, watching a live ballet performance, media interviews, administration tasks and everything in between! Hearing from all the different staff about their diverse backgrounds and experience, as well as an outline of their current role in the company was very interesting. As Queensland Ballet is going through a stage of great growth, the staff said it was challenging to keep up but they loved their job. It was great to connect and network with the professionals currently working in the local arts industry. Thank you to Katherine Duhigg (Education Manager at QLD Ballet), Queensland Ballet and BrisbaneSDE for providing this amazing opportunity.

Get to Know our Student Leaders!

Interview with Zoe Bowman, Arts and Literature Representative, Year 8 BrisbaneSDE Student

• What do you find most rewarding about being a Student Leader at BrisbaneSDE?

Having an ability to help people with their opinions and to bring new exciting events to the school.

• What are some challenges you encounter when participating in the Student Leadership program via distance education?

Sometimes the internet cuts out, but I do my best to at least make part of the student council sessions.

• Why did you decide to nominate as a Student Leader?

I believe I could make a difference as I have both mainstream and homeschooling experience.

• What is your vision for the Student Council?

That we are the people students turn to when they have a problem and expect to get help.

• What skills have you developed since becoming a Student Leader?

I've found I'm more attentive, searching for anything that would be valuable to mention during session time.

Interview with Penelope Hudson, Junior Secondary Student Leader, Year 9 BrisbaneSDE Student

Hello. My name is Penny and I am one of the Junior Leaders this year.

I decided to nominate as a Student Leader because I enjoy learning and making others happy. As a Student Leader, I have been given the opportunity to learn and experience new things and plan activities and events that will make others happy and make a difference.

My vision for the Student Council is to not only to follow the Student Council’s mission to “Empower all students at BrisbaneSDE to access the opportunities, voice and connections to grow our innovative, Inspirational and inclusive school culture’” but also just to make students at

our school happy and encourage them to enjoy learning.

This is my second year as being part of the Student Council and Student Leadership Program and I have really enjoyed it. It is very rewarding to be a Student Leader because you have a say in school activities and learn so much from others while experiencing new things.

Though student leadership is very rewarding, there are challenges too. Communication can be very hard when working with others online and through technology. Technology is not perfect and sometimes messes up. This is the same for people. I have found myself making many mistakes, but I enjoy learning from them, improving and overcoming challenges.

Through the Student Council I have learnt and experienced many things like being given the opportunity to go to conferences where I have met many inspiring people and learnt about leadership.

I have also learnt how to take effective notes. Last year, I was the Student Council’s Secretary and I would take minutes during the meeting and organise many things. This was a great experience for me and I have continued to use the skill of note taking from then on.

Another thing I have learnt is what it is like to be the Chairperson and lead the meetings while also being moderator. I have been given the opportunity multiple times and I have learnt so much about leading others and how to run a collaborate session.

I am very grateful for the Student Council and Student Leadership Program as I have learnt so much from teachers, fellow students and new experiences. I encourage anyone who enjoys helping others, learning and planning fun activities to join the Student Council.
