He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in Rome in 1847. In Rome he joined the Congregation of the Oratory founded in the 16th century by St Philip Neri later known as the Apostle of Rome. The Oratory in Birmingham was first established in Maryvale, then moved to a converted gin distillery in Digbeth, and finally settled at Edgbaston in 1852. After Newman’s death in 1890 it was decided to replace the first Oratory church with a larger building as a memorial to him. The architect E. Doran Webb (1864- 1931) was commissioned and the foundation stone was laid in 1903. The church is built in a classical style which evokes early Italian baroque and is an example of Edwardian baroque architecture. The new church was built on top of the old church, with the old church remaining in use for a time, before it was dismantled and the remains removed to reveal the new church. The total length of Doran Webb’s church is 198 feet, of which the Nave accounts for 152 feet: the total breadth is 57 feet of which the Nave is 45 feet. The ceiling rests directly upon an architrave and is tunnel-vaulted instead of the flat roof more usual in basilica-style buildings. Lighting is provided by dormer windows set into the roof and from four rectangular windows in the drum of the dome. Thou alone wast counted worthy this world’s ransom to sustain, that a shipwrecked race for ever might a port of refuge gain, with the sacred Blood anointed of the Lamb for sinners slain. 6. Reflection

Our sweet Christ, the Word Incarnate, has given Himself to us for everything that was necessary for us, even to the hard and ignominious death upon the cross. St Philip Neri

Don't measure your love of our Lord by the depth of your feelings; this is truly a small measure. Abandon yourself into His hands with confidence; your love will increase more and more, but you will not notice it, and that does not matter. Don't ever allow yourself to become upset by your misfortunes...should you find yourself in this situation by the will of God, remain humble and lowly before God and be at great peace. Respond to all misfortunes with gentleness, peace, tenderness and interior moderation before God, abandoning yourself simply into His hands so that He may make of you and in you what He pleases. Don't allow yourself to become disheartened or discouraged if it appears that you are making no progress...Simply strive to forget all these things and turn your mind toward God...as long as you are busy with yourself, you will not make much

progress on the way to perfection. [O]nly look at God, and this with a pure and simple faith.

THIS WEEK’S NEWS FROM CHERISH LIFE

Australia's largest abortion provider Marie Stopes Australia (MSA), which performs around 40,000 out of Australia's 70,000 to 80,000 abortions a year, may be forced to shut its doors due to a lack of personal

protective equipment (PPE).

MSA has complained it only has about two weeks supply of surgical masks and hand sanitiser left, which are required for performing surgical abortions.

The profit-making abortion giant has had orders for PPE cancelled or refused because the supplies are required for frontline medical staff fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

MSA’s chief executive, Jamal Hakim, complained: "Many PPE suppliers do not consider abortion to be healthcare." We couldn't agree more.

Very encouragingly, the Australian Government also has declined requests from MSA for PPE, suggesting instead that they go to Chemist Warehouse to try to purchase them there.

Cherish Life applauds the Australian Government and wholesalers reserving PPE for true medical professionals who save lives and not abortionists. Additionally, elective surgery around Australia is being cancelled, and since around 98% of abortions in Australia are for convenience, i.e. "elective surgery", it is only fair that they are cancelled too.

If MSA is forced to shut its doors, the lives of thousands of babies will be saved and their mothers rescued from the heartbreak of abortion.

It would be one good thing that has resulted from this terrible pandemic.

In other recent news: Vale, Bruce Dawe, Australia’s much loved, pro-life poet (15 February 1930 -1 April 2020). Dawe stated his stance quite simply when he said “I’m all in favour of the unborn having rights too. I don’t believe that simply because the unborn happen to be located where they are, gives...the unborn child no rights.” Even though he was Catholic, Dawe also stated that he “had been writing about abortion long before I became a Catholic. It’s something that went with my belief in the sacredness of life, and so it’s consistent with a generally anti-nuclear view of the world, and a pro-environmental view of life.” Search The Wholly Innocent online for Bruce Dawe’s powerful polemic on abortion, told from the perspective of the unborn child. The poet risked professional prestige and lost important contracts through his public readings of this poem. †RIP Bruce Dawe

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION A spiritual communion is a devotional practice whereby we exercise the mind and heart in desiring to receive Christ in the Holy Eucharist, either as a preparation for participation in the Mass, or when it is not possible to receive Holy Communion. Since Christ himself is the ultimate goal of every human desire, the value of a well made spiritual communion is very great. "When you do not receive Communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed upon you." (St Teresa of Avila, the Way of Perfection, Ch35). St John Vianney taught that making a spiritual communion has an effect like that of blowing on embers to make them flame up again, so the love of God flames up in the heart by means of the spiritual communion. The most generally known form is that of St Alphonsus de Liguori:

"My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, please enter spiritually into my soul. I welcome you, I love and adore You, never permit me to be separated from You. Amen."

ACT OF PERFECT CONTRITION

Through an act of Perfect Contrition you can receive the forgiveness of your sins outside of confession, even mortal sins, provided that you determine yourself

to correct your life and make a firm resolution to go to sacramental confession as soon as you can, when it becomes possible. Remember, these are extraordinary measures only, for times when a priest is truly not available to you.

Perfect Contrition is sorrow and detestation of sin arising out of the love of God. One way of exciting this contrition in our hearts is by considering the passion of Jesus Christ and making acts of love for Him. We can also think of the infinite love which God has for

us, and express sorrow in our heart in the presence of this great love which we have offended.

O my God, I am heartily sorry for all the sins of my life simply because by them I have offended You and Your infinite love. I desire never to offend You again. Grant that my soul my enter into Your grace, and remain united to You forever. Amen.

MASS READINGS

First Reading: Acts 10:34, 37- 43

Peter addressed Cornelius and his household: "You have heard about the recent happenings in Judaea; about Jesus of Nazareth and how he began in Galilee, after John had been preaching baptism. God had anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and because God was with him, Jesus went about doing good and curing all who had fallen into the power of the devil. Now I, and those with me, can witness to everything he did throughout the countryside of Judaea and in Jerusalem itself: and also to the fact that they killed him by hanging him on a tree, yet three days afterwards God raised him to life and allowed him to be seen, not by the whole people but only by certain witnesses God had chosen beforehand. Now we are those witnesses - we have eaten and drunk with him after his resurrection from the dead - and he has ordered us to proclaim this to his people and to tell them that God has appointed him to judge everyone, alive or dead. It is to him that all the prophets bear this witness: that all who believe in Jesus will have their sins forgiven through his name."

The Word of the Lord Response: Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm 117 (Said by all)

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, for his love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: ‘His love has no end.’

The Lord’s right hand has triumphed; his right hand raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount his deeds.

The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes.

Second Reading: Colossians 3:1-4

Since you have been brought back to true life with Christ, you must look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is, sitting at God's right hand. Let your thoughts be on heavenly things, not on the things that are on the earth, because you have died, and now the life you have is hidden with Christ in God. But when Christ is revealed - and he is your life - you too will be revealed in all your glory with him.

The Word of the Lord Response: Thanks be to God

Gospel Acclamation:

Alleluia, alleluia! Christ has become our paschal sacrifice; Let us feast with joy in the Lord. Alleluia!

Gospel: John 20:1-9 It was very early on the first day of the week and still dark, when Mary of Magdala came to the tomb.

She saw the stone had been moved away from the tomb and came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved. "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb" she said "and we don't know where they have put him." So Peter set out with the other disciple to go to the tomb. They ran together, but the other disciple, running faster than Peter, reached the tomb first; he bent down and saw the linen cloths lying on the ground, but did not go in. Simon Peter who was following now came up, went right into the tomb, saw the linen cloths on the ground, and also the cloth that had been over his head; this was not with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciples who had reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and he believed. Till this moment they had failed to understand the teaching of scripture, that he must rise from the dead.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
