PARENT TESTIMONIALSON BENEFITS FROM CAMP ONAWAY

The following letter was received by the Boys’ & Girls’ Brigade from a parent of ayoung camper. It is a great illustration of the fun and adventure kids experience atCamp Onaway, but, more importantly, it reinforces the fact that there is real purposeand tangible benefits that parents see in their child when they return from camp.

Just wanted to send a note of thanks for making it a great week for Steven. Hehad attended a church camp the prior year and things had just been “OK”. Someof the older boys had not displayed a true Christian spirit and the leadership hadvery little structure concerning scheduled activities. Steven left for Onaway withan open mind and a mother at home who was a bit concerned!

Needless to say – STEVEN HAD AN AWESOME TIME!

Just to give you a sense of his enthusiasm - He told us about the swim raft, theslip and slide, kayaking, tubing, banana boating, trying to water ski, the Apacheand Eye-patchi tribes, getting up early to fish, completing 8 of the Riddler’sriddles, canoeing during the cross country race, eating watermelon, havingbreakfast at the tables outside his cabin while the guys who had their elbows onthe table had to run around the entire grinder, and CATCHING A DRUMSTICK FROM THE NOYZ MONKEYZ! How he ran out of time to go catch aturtle or make a new “Frost Bite” name tag.

He has recited his Menominee cheer – even if it was the same as last year – as wellas a few other chants that his mother is still trying to understand!

He also learned some valuable lessons:

LeadershipHe told his mom how the cabin leaders and chiefs actually helped the youngercampers and had fun without being inappropriate. He saw the planning that leaders and chiefs put into preparing for the week. How having an organized schedule made things more fun for everyone.

TeamworkHe gave examples of what happened to his cabin when everyone pitched in duringcleanup/detail and what happened when not everyone was so helpful.

Anyway, he told his mom last night that she could be with him 51 weeks out ofthe year but during the 52nd he would be at Onaway! Thanks for being good rolemodels for my son and helping him experience the magic of Onaway!

We’re proud of the outstanding quality camps Onaway volunteer leaders consistentlydeliver. Thank you volunteers for another incredible camping season!

Fall 2009

An incredible year at

BRIGADE BEGINS

OCTOBER 5Join us at 7pm!

Bring your friends!Cody Cavanaugh kicks off another exciting year on October 5 & 6

Don’t miss out!

New staffWe are excited that Jason Pheifer and Katie Vatland have joined our Brigade family. Jason will be Program Leader for the 7th and 8th grade boys’ and Katie will be gearing her efforts towards the 8th grade girls’ program and 10th grade co-ed program. Brigaders you’re going to love the creativity and new offerings Jason and Katie are bringing to the Brigade program just for you!

Brigade Family MattersIn the dictionary, family can be defined as a group of people united by certain convictions or a common affiliation. While that may be true, it doesn’t begin to define the incredible Brigade family. Missing are the characteristics of the mentoring relationships that bridge generations (from youth to adults), relational bonding between youth and positive adult role models, and fast friendships formed between all ages. The photos below are part of the Brigade family album, each with its own unique story. Family matters to us, make sure you join us October 5, 2009, when Brigade fall/winter programs begin—come and be part of the Brigade family.

Family matters at Camp Onaway. It’s not uncommon to see three generations of campers on the island. Pictured above (l–r) is the Ramich family attending Girls’ Camp 1. Markie, Madeline, Laura, Gary, Laurie, Carley, and Bailey Ramich.

Family matters when it comes to volunteering at Brigade. Pictured at left are volunteers Julie Doire (daughter), and Larry Schmidt (father to Julie and grandpa to Tyler). Larry volunteers as a workshop leader to support his grandson Tyler (center front) and daughter Julie’s interests and as a way to spend quality time

as a family. Just one example of the many Brigade families. Contact the Brigade office if you are interested in volunteering this fall 920-725-3983.

Earlier this year Kathy Clusman and Linda Ahles wrote wonderful essays that were published in a book about women-to-women mentoring for the Women’s Fund within the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region. To celebrate the publication, Linda Ahles invited a generational mix of Brigade ladies to attend the annual Women’s Fund luncheon on September 10. Pictured (front row l to r) are Tosha Martzahl-Shanahan, Marge Easton, Gerrie Casper, Kristi Murray, and Linda Ahles, (back row l to r) Pat Kroiss, Becky Arndt, Marnie Spielbauer, Amy Clark, and Rosie Ahles. Kathy and Linda’s essays can be found on the Brigade website under news releases or at http://www.bgbrigade.com/news-releases.asp.

E-4 Specialist Tim (Moose) O’Brien donated a U.S. flag that was flown with honor over Afghanistan earlier this year aboard an A-10C Warthog in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. O’Brien (left) is pictured with Boys’ 4 Camp Manager, Jeff Keck (center) and Camp Director, Paul Linzmeyer (right). O’Brien is a 14-year volunteer leader at Camp Onaway and wanted to donate the flag because he was unable to donate his time to the children this summer due to his active service overseas in Afghanistan. Freedom isn’t free—service matters.

GRILLING COMPETITION BENEFITS BRIGADE

WELCOME TO BRIGADEIn January, David Weiss joined the Brigade staff as Development Director. David brings a strong marketing and development background.

Weiss is active in the community as the President of the Board of Directors at Christine Ann in Oshkosh and has been a volunteer Firefighter for the Town of Neenah since 2010. Weiss, his wife Rebekah and new son Fritz live in the Town of Neenah.

“I look forward to spreading the word about this great community resource and helping to develop the community leaders of tomorrow,” says Weiss.

For twenty years Mary DeShaney has served as accountant and administrative assistant at Brigade and in May she will retire. Mary will be deeply missed, however we’re excited for new hire Jen Foucalt to carry on Mary’s duties.

Jen joins Brigade after 16 years as an accounting specialist at Lakeview Credit Union. Jen, her husband Andy, and three kids (Will and twins Anna & Ryan) live in Neenah. Her oldest son finished his first year as a 6th grade Brigader and is also part of the climbing club. The whole family is avid sports fans, rooting on and attending many Timber Rattlers, Badgers football, Brewers and Packers games.

Welcome the start of summer Wednesday, June 25 in the Courtyard at Radisson Paper Valley for Grilling with Beer—a live grilling competition with local chefs grilling with—you guessed it—beer as the main ingredient.

delicious grilled foods then place your vote at the grilling station of your choice.

In addition to Guests’ Choice judging, a panel of celebrity judges will also place their vote for the best grilled dish. We’re excited to announce that Camp Onaway’s cook, Tim O’Brien

aka Moose, is one of the celebrity judges!

Spring brings new and exciting times to the Brigade. Our second floor kitchen is going through a complete renovation thanks to a group of amazing volunteers who are pounding, hammering and creating white out conditions as the dust flies. We are also excited to welcome a new wellness studio on the third floor—complete with soothing colored walls and wood flooring.

I imagine the Rough Craftsmen reading this are getting excited about their opportunity to prepare Onaway for a busy summer. We will have a rebuilt boat house, reconstructed Chore Boys and a new roof on headquarters just to mention a few of the projects that will be completed this year. Thinking about all that makes me tired and extremely grateful for the passion and dedication of our volunteers.

I heard an interesting comment at a winter weekend this year that if Brigade builds leaders then that

must mean that we are all leaders! Absolutely – some of us lead in a quiet unassuming way, some lead by example and still others lead in a more traditional manner.

Another class of leaders graduated this year and I am so proud of them and their achievements. We are so much more than a building or an island—these future leaders have been shaped and molded by the people who make the Brigade a living, breathing organization.

Thank you for your involvement in the Boys’ & Girls’ Brigade, you have built an organization that has stood the test of time. I look forward to reconnecting with our camp volunteers this summer and I look forward to meeting those of you who will be involved for the first time.

Sincerely,

Laura Kemps
