When did you start singing?I’ve been singing all my life, I’m sure Icame out the womb performing. I wasalways singing, dancing and acting; Idid it everywhere; at home, at church,at school, at community events. I was13 when I was approached by theBBC to star in a documentary calledHeart of Harlesden which was viewedby millions. That led to interest frommajor labels and TV producers.

What’s your advice for other young people?Anything is achievable. I alwayswanted to do music. The worlddoesn’t owe you anything but ifyou’re able to work hard, developyour talent into a skill and have the drive, focus and persistence, you will achieve what you want.

You’ve taken part in BSU. What has that done for you?BSU gave me a platform to developmy skills. I did the acting, dance andsinging classes, among others.Theyhave varied courses and facilities forpeople with different interests. I’dadvise youngsters to take advantageof it and start building theirexperiences in the things they want todo. Having BSU as a platform helpedto develop and hone in on what I do.I’ve acted in EastEnders E20, SpooksCode 9, as well as starring in PrimeSuspect, Casualty and The Bill. I’vealso toured with Amy Winehouse andhave performed at the Grammys,MTV EMAs, MOBOs. Performing atsuch events has been inspiring and agreat way to network and showcasemy passions, as well as see the world.

What are you working on now?I’m currently finishing my debutalbum, touring, working on newacting projects, writing a sitcom andstarting a performing arts school.

Where do you want to be in five years time?I’d like to think I would have soldmillions of albums worldwide, touring my music globally, will bestarring in and producing sitcomsand films and will be known as oneof the best ‘triple threat’ acts. Myperforming arts school would havedeveloped a lot of young talent andgiven them a fantastic platform andI would have continued to show theworld that great things come fromeverywhere, especially the UK andespecially Brent.

Hundreds of parents use midwiferyservices every year at the WelcomeChildren’s Centre in Wembley.

On offer are post-natal clinics, wheremidwives check the weight of babiesand the health of their mums. There arealso ante-natal clinics, home visits tomum and baby and help with arranginghospital visits and scans.

Until now, parents at WelcomeChildren’s Centre have been the onlyones in Brent able to use midwiferyservices through their centre but that is all about to change.

Children’s centres offer health, earlyeducation and family support services toparents with children under the age offive.Typically, this includes speech andlanguage support, child health clinics, parenting groups and Job Centre Plusand Citizens’ Advice sessions.

Faced with the need to make hugesavings, Brent Council has reorganisedchildren’s centres to ensure the 17 in theborough stay open for the immediatefuture. A number of changes are beingintroduced as part of the process.

Services will continue to be offeredto everyone who is eligible but morewill be targeted at vulnerable families. This means that parents who need itmost will get support.

Sessions are being delivered moreevenly across the local area so that everyparent should be within a short journeyof at least one children’s centre.

And closer working between BrentCouncil and NHS Brent means that

over the next few months morechildren’s centres will offer health andmidwifery services such as breastfeeding support, weaning and nutritionadvice and help to give up smoking.

Sue Gates, Head of Integrated andExtended Services for Brent Council, said: “We want children to be betterprepared for life and for meeting life’schallenges – physically, socially andemotionally.

“All the research shows that theearlier you can support families withyoung children, the less serious theproblems they face as they get olderare. These changes will help givechildren the best start in life.”

The shortage of landfill space means Brent has to pay a tax todump everything we don’t recycle. That tax hits us all through ourcouncil bills and the tax rate is going up. So we have decided tochange how we collect your waste so that more gets recycled.

At present we recycle only 34 per cent of our wasteand we want to raise that to 60 per cent.

Our new waste collection service will:

• help everyone in Brent torecycle new materialsfor the first time

• give most residentsa separate collectionof food waste

• send less waste tolandfill, with lessnegative impact onthe environment

• save money on thetax that we pay tothrow away valuablematerials.

Shisha, for those of you who don’tknow, is a water pipe used for smokingflavoured tobacco. It originated around600 years ago in India and the MiddleEast and is still around today.

A common past-time in Brent foryoung people is to smoke shisha, assome regard it as something sociable, while others a chance to relax. However, what these people are not aware of is the outcomes ofsmoking shisha.

A lot of rumours about shisha are outthere and it is time people are able todistinguish them from the truth. BrentYouth Parliament, NHS Brent andvoluntary organisation Shishawareworked in partnership to produce ashort film about shisha to raiseawareness of the health effects ofsmoking shisha amongst young people.

There was a workshop carried out byShishaware with around 50 young

people, who are members of BYP, todevelop their knowledge about smokingshisha. At the beginning of theworkshop it was pretty clear that theydidn’t really recognise the truth aboutshisha, which was highlighted when wedid a true or false activity. In spite ofthis they were still aware that shisha didnot have a positive impact on yourhealth.

BYP members designed, producedand helped edit the shisha short film‘Shisha - Don’t be Fooled’. The shortfilm is part of a resource pack for NHSBrent that is currently being deliveredto all secondary schools in Brent.

To find more information aboutShishaware please visit:www.shishaware.org. To view the shishashort film, visit www.bmyvoice.org.uk/byp

Please note, the shisha short film isnot meant to scare or upset you it isjust there to give you the facts.

IKEA Wembley is one of the businesses workingclosely with Brent Council on the Climate ChangeSteering Group to improve sustainability and helpmake Brent one of the cleanest and greenest placesto live in London.

Yellow,blue andgreen

JULY/AUGUST 2011 THE BRENT MAGAZINE

If you’re the world’s largest furniture store what do you do with severalthousand tonnes of waste material each year? Recycle it of course, and atIKEA Wembley that means 91 per cent of everything used in the33,000m2 store, including items taken back by customers for recycling. But Nuno Costa, one of the store’s managers responsible forsustainability is not happy. He wants that figure up to 98 per cent in ayear’s time.

“Our commitment to recycle and reuse is why we always try to walkthe extra mile in order to put sustainability at the centre of ouroperations. We are not only recycling very effectively, which is verysatisfying, but we’re making money by doing it, which helps us to keepcosts down and prices low.”

As well as the moral argument, the company has a convincing businesscase for recycling plastic, cardboard and other materials. Waste isprocessed and packed before leaving the Wembley store and then sold onfor raw materials. The team is also studying the possibility of compostingfood waste on site.

The Swedish company promotes recycling and furniture reuse via itswebsite and in store, as well as educating staff and customers to thinkabout sustainability. This includes donating old furniture to charity orpassing it on to neighbours and friends when it is replaced.

“At IKEA we strive to create a better everyday life for many people allover the world, and this means taking responsibility for the future of ourworld,” says Nuno.

Jeff ’s team works with council servicesand communities in Brent to deliverenvironmental sustainability in theborough. This includes everything fromimplementing the Climate ChangeStrategy to reducing carbon emissionsand supporting Brent SustainabilityForum and Fairtrade.

Jeff says: “The team encouragesreductions of carbon emissions in theborough particularly through cutting theamount of energy being used.

We also encourage sustainable travel, waste reduction and thinking about theglobal impacts of what we do on thenext generation.

We are currently working across thecouncil to achieve a 25 per centreduction in the council’s carbonemissions by 2014.

Soon the council will have to pay a newcarbon tax, which is calculated based onthe amount of energy it uses each year.Current estimates indicate that this couldbe £338,000 based on £12 a tonne ofcarbon. But this price is planned to riseannually up to £30 a tonne.

We are working to reduce the amountof energy the council uses so that ourbills become smaller. Cutting theamount of waste the council sends tolandfill and reducing our water bills willalso help to save money.

We need to persuade individuals andorganisations to change their behaviourto be more environmentally friendly andreduce greenhouse gases, as this is vitalfor future generations to be able toenjoy what we have now.

The job has changed a great dealsince I joined the council. There is muchmore emphasis on dealing with climatechange, reducing the amount of energyused by the council, schools, residentsand businesses as well as supportinglinks with the community onenvironmental issues. Fairtrade is now more actively supported by the council and Brent SustainabilityForum’s activities go from strength to strength.”

The festival centered around a nationalexhibition promoting the economic andsocial recovery of the country after theSecond World War.The main celebrationwas held on the south bank of the riverThames, but other events were organisedacross Britain, including in Brent.

At the time Brent was split into thetwo boroughs of Willesden and Wembleyand each entered into the festival spiritwith very different levels of enthusiasm.

Willesden held events throughout thesummer. Concerts and children’sentertainment were organised in itsparks and 500 schoolchildren took partin a display of folk dancing. Many of theactivities were planned to support thewar-damaged economy and promote

feelings of progress and recovery, withlocal people even helping to tidy upbomb-sites. In September a specialshopping week was held to promotelocal business.

The Willesden festival programmewould have been fuller but it was badlyaffected by adverse weather, with streetparties drenched in torrential rain, andsome events called off.

Wembley Borough Council, on the other hand, elected not to undertakeany official festival activities. The sole celebration to take place was a stage production of Merrie England by the Wembley Philharmonic Society.A complaint to the local newspaperbemoaned the lack of festival spirit

in the borough. This summer the Southbank Centre is

hosting events for the 60th anniversaryof the Festival of Britain, and BrentMuseum will be taking part by holdingan indoor street party at WillesdenGreen Library Centre on Wednesday 24 August, 1-4.30pm.

The centre will also join in the fun atSouthbank on Sunday 28 July, whereBrent residents will mark thecelebrations of 1951 with a display of Indian folk dancing. [email protected] or 020 8937 3600 to find out more.Keep up-to-date with our blog atwww.brentmuseumandarchives.wordpress.com
