Letter from the EditorBy Vatna Vaenleifsdottir

I‟m pleased to present the thirdedition of our newspaper. Where

last month‟s edition was filled withunhappy news of the crime thathaunts our beloved city, thismonth‟s paper is morerepresentative of the creativity of our community.

We have some wonderful weekly events that can provide us withsome respite after slaving in thefields or braving the harsh

wilderness. The Lonely MountainBand, Hobbiton Philharmonic, among many bands, offer us musicto soothe our souls. Stories of high adventure and wistful longing provide us with exciting journeysfrom the safety of our seats by thefire.

In this edition, I give you a little of everything. We‟ve a song by Lady Ghingeriel, some poetry, some

stories and even some artwork. Sosit back and enjoy! And rememberto turn in your articles, advertisements and creative piecessoon to get them into the nextissue. •

A Sense of LossFrom  The Life and Times of Kaleigh Starshine

As I wander in the countryside

near Tinnudir completing themany tasks I have been given, Iam awed by the number of largeruins I come across. Even in theircurrent state, they bear a regality that is striking and a beauty thatlingers to this very day.

I am ashamed to admit that my ignorance of our history and timesof long ago is appalling. I cannot

imagine how wonderful it wouldhave been to see these structuresin all of their splendor. The men  who built them long ago musthave been very great, indeed. Itmakes one wonder how it came topass that they faded fromexistence, with only haunting relicsto remind us that they once lived, and magnificently at that, I mustbelieve.

I am sent to Ost Forod where Iam to continue my efforts. I mustsay, however, that my welcomehere has not been the mostfriendly I have ever experienced. I

suppose I will just have to earn thepeoples‟ trust! •

Trouble seems to surround thtown of Bree, as the loomingcrowds of crebain flock overhead.  They stir above the courtyard infront of the Prancing Pony.

Lately, the awkward, black-cladman  – a staple of the front porch –  seems to be conspicuouslyabsent. He has not held his usualpost in some days and it nowseems as if the figure-head of thefront porch has disappeared.  Where could he have gone? Whyis he missing? Is there a new“figure-head” in town? What of

Dear Mom and Dad Somehow this letter ended up in our offices. We believe it was intercepted by a nosey hobbit, who perhaps thought it was newsworthy. We decided to print it.

Dear Mom and Dad:

Urika, Peaberry and I have cometo this place called the ForsakenInn out east of Bree. It's a run-down place that is more ruin thaninn, but they have dry beds and werented ourselves a few to spendthe night.

When I went upstairs to see aboutbuying some groceries I wasshocked to see Adenfirth come inthe door.

I haven't mentioned Adenfirth yet. We met him in Bree and then gotsplit up again and here he wasshowing up in a nowhere place likethe Forsaken Inn.

 Anyway, everybody's sleeping now

so I thought I would fill you in alittle more on what I've been upto.

The last I mentioned is that thisranger Halros asked us to go upinto the hills and scout out thegoblins to find out their numbers.  And he also suggested that if we were to thin down their numbers abit that this would be useful to the

people of Brockenborings andhelp to convince the goblins tostay in the mountains.

This was all quite new to me -being asked to walk out and go killthings that can walk and talk. Iremember when Dirk asked Urikaand I to wallop some bandit andsee if we could find anything thatsaid what the bandits were up to. Isnuck up on him and tried to(continued on p. 7)

My Time Among theLumi-Väki ja Karhu KansaBy Peuma

  The Lumi-Väki, more commonly

known as the Lossoth, are a proudtribal people who inhabit the wilds

of the northern frozen wastes of

Forochel. Their name literally

means “people of the snow.”

They have forged a life for

themselves among the snow and

ice, subsisting off of what little the

land has to offer.

Most of the Lumi-väki that inhabitthe shores along the Icebay of

Forochel belong to the Karhu

Kansa  –  the Bear Nation.

Millennia ago, when migration led

the Karhu Kansa to the Icebay,

legend tells us that other Kansa

migrated in the opposite direction,

towards the Grey and Misty

Mountains. Nothing remains

today of these other Kansa and no

one is entirely sure what happenedto them. The social structure of the Lumi-väki is further sub-divided into heimo  –  tribes  – andkoti – family groups.

Historically, the Lumi-väki werenomadic, following the herds of elk and mammoth across the ice.

  They constructed houses of snow

navigated my way through thecrowd to find a spot up front.

There was so much to take in, Ihave no idea who was playing

when I arrived, but it was abeautiful song and extremely well-performed. Haperella, in hertrademark green gown, introducednew sets and generally did a  wonderful job of keeping

everything organized. The crowd  was full of an intense amount of energy. People were cheering and

clapping, waving to one another.Fireworks kept illuminating the

sky. There was a circle in front of the stage where several people were dancing along with the songs.  A cloud of smoke seemed to

hover above the crowd from allthe pipeweed.

I found a facilitator standing on arock at the back of the crowd who  was passing out free ale andpipeweed. I made my way back to

the front and settled in with my Blackberry Ale. I downed my mug

before I knew it and with thatfamiliar toasty glow inside and ahaziness around my field of vision,I happily swayed back and forth tothe music, while adding moresmoke to the air from my pipe. It

could have been the ale or it couldhave simply been the excitementof my first time, but at one point

in the evening Harperella wasdancing so gracefully, it seemedshe was floating on air.

I had to leave a little early, but Ihad a great time. Cheers to all thepeople who devote so much effortevery week to successfully pulling this off. I highly recommend thateveryone attend Ales and Tales atleast once, if only to have theexperience. •

Heavily cloaked, ominous figureshave been frequenting the alley porch outside the Prancing Pony tavern to speak with a very soft-spoken gentleman named Amlan. It is said that they might beRangers, but it has yet to beconfirmed. On one particularly fortuitousoccasion I was allowed to observea ceremony, which I will relate foryou here:

Inside, with only the glow of thedying embers for light, thedrumming starts, soft and slowly

Lumi-väki assembling for a ceremony

Lumi-väki (cont. from p. 5)part due to increased trading withthe kivi-väki – dwarves – and kesä- väki  –  men  –  to the south. Atentative centralization of authority has grown up around the

Iso-talo  –  the Great Lodge  –  inSuri-kyla. There, representativemembers of the different heimomeet to discuss issues of concern, such as the encroachment of the  Angmarim from the east and theraiding practices of the susi-väki  –  the fiercesome Gauradan.Consensus rarely comes easily.

Upon my arrival in Forochel, I wasfar from warmly welcomed. TheLumi-väki are of a suspicious

at first. The shaman begins hissong, guttural sounds emanating from deep in his throat. Hissinging echoes the howling of the  wolf, the groaning of the elk, the  voices of his guardian spirits. As

his song and the beating of thedrums grow stronger, the soundsseem to come from all around me.From behind me. From above my head. Now at my feet. Now behind me. Time seemed to stopand go on forever all at once. I  was mesmerized. When thsinging and drumming stoppedsuddenly and the lamp was lit, Ifelt as though I had been joltedawake. As the shaman recited his

closing praying I marveled at theexperience. •

Mom & Dad (cont. from p. 7)right to think of them that way.But I couldn't say no on thethought of some goblins coming into Brokenborings and doing to it what the bandits did to Archet, or

worse. So, I agreed to scout thehills and to kill any goblins I foundif I found any.

Urika and Peaberry agreed to go  with me, which I was gratefulenough for when the time came, because there was more than a few goblins in those hills. They hadtheir own city in there - easily twice as big as Brokenborings and

Scary combined, and filled with somany goblins they would have hadno trouble overrunning thehobbits if it was in their mind todo so.

We came to the goblin camp, andthey had posted a guard. But they had probably lived there for quitesome time without any hobbitscoming up to disturb them, so the

guards were not too vigilant abouttheir guarding. At the same time,  we couldn't just walk past andexpect a fair greeting. We spentsome time discussing options anddecided there was nothing to dobut to kill him so as we can getinto the camp. And we had to killhim quickly so as he wouldn‟tsound an alarm.

Well, I put my wolf-hunting skillsto work and I just pictured in my mind that this goblin was a two-legged wolf and I threw my javelinright at him. The goblin was sostunned it didn't know what tothink and so I charged forth withmy sword and I stabbed it and justas I did Peaberry fired arrows intoit and I saw the arrows zip pastme, then I grabbed the goblin as itdied and let it down onto the

ground slowly so as it didn‟t make

much noise.

Then there was this other goblin  who was walking towards us and  would have stumbled on us soonenough so we quickly did the same

to him before he had a chance to warn the camp.

With those goblins dead we werethrough the front gate, so we took the chance to look inside and seejust how many goblins there were.

It wasn‟t far inside the gate that wecame on a whole camp of goblins. I  would say that there were a half

dozen or so in the camp itself andmilling about.

I have to say it shames me that oneof the things I was thinking is thatif we killed the goblins and took their stuff we might be able to sellsome of it and finally have somereal money in our pocket so as wecould eat proper for once. I wasinstantly ashamed of myself for the

thought of killing things so as Icould rob them. I felt really badabout the whole thing.

But I know people would tell methat they‟re just goblins and Ishouldn‟t have such thoughts – justas others were possibly telling thegoblins, “Those hobbits are justhobbits and you shouldn‟t havesuch thoughts.”

My brain was thinking about thesethings, but at the same time I wasin this goblin camp surrounded by goblins who might at any momentgather up an army to attack Brockenborings.

So the three of us figured out aplan for battling these six goblins.Peaberry laid out a trap for any   who charged at us and I figured I

could get the first shot in and drop

one of them and that would leavfour goblins against the three ous.

These goblins were not pofighters so it was risky but wcouldn‟t figure out any other wato put the odds more in our favoso we went ahead with it

Well, I‟m writing you this letter syou know we lived and the goblinall got killed. Urika and Peaberrare alright, too. I suspect the weren‟t having the thoughts I wahaving about killing the goblins  They were among those wthought that there‟s nothing elsto be done with goblins.

I could say that, once we were inthe camp, any goblins who camupon us seemed quite content on

seeing us killed and maybe serveup in a good hobbit stew or somsuch. Any number of the goblin we killed next just charged after u  when they saw us. They werensmart or organized in any way  they just attacked so as to kill uthe instant they saw us, as if theycouldn‟t even think to do anythinelse.

We must have killed three doze

goblins in that camp and that wernothing but a fraction of thosthat lived. Knowing their numbers  we made the call to move to thexit and get back to the hunteHalros.

Once outside the gate and awafrom the goblins, I all bucollapsed on the hillside. I wacovered in goblin blood ansuffering no shortage of nicks an

As soon as my mind figured out we were safe again it seems that ittold my body to just quitaltogether. I was too weak to standand I couldn‟t hold down my breakfast any longer. It took agood hour before I could find theenergy to stand up again.

We took what we looted off thebodies and split up what looked valuable and resolved to clean up

the rest of it and sell it back intown  – and the goblins had somecoin on them anyway that we took  with us.

We found the hunter back at hiscamp and told him that we foundgoblins and killed a good numberof them. He told us to report back to Bounder Primstone inBrockenborings and to add thatthe leader of the goblins wasn‟t agoblin and that he should be alertto the possibility of attack.

Strangely, Bounder Primstonedidn‟t seem all too interested inour report of goblins. Instead, hetold us to look to some relic that was found in the quarry at Scary  –  the head of some old dead goblinleader that Bullroarer took care of long ago. And he was willing topay us decent so we decided we  would go ahead and do that.

But it puzzled me that he didn‟tseem to care about the goblinsmuch.

Well, this letter is long and I needmy sleep before we head up intothe hills tomorrow. This forsakeninn does have a post so I‟ll see thatthis gets off to you before I go.

Fluttering of a Thrush

From the journal of Valiana Ulmaquelle

O menel,Dim ulma lanta,

Namarie ulma, Ai vana hisie quelle

From heaven, a sad rain doth fall, “Farewell rain. Alas! A beautiful misshall fade.”

A wind stirs from the east, deceivingly cold and with ill intent. Moshiver at its touch, continuing on with their ignorant lives, they become

bothered with it, warming their hands or tightening their cloaks abouthemselves in an attempt to ignore it and what message it carries. Yet I, stand and feel its sinister touch and accept its heralding. I becomembraced within its amorous grasp and it consumes my thoughts.

“ Alas, I cannot see the stars of the evening. Alas, I cannot travel now tthe West to where my kin shall go. Alas, I feel the burden of this worland soon shall fade as well…”

I speak these words and weep.I lament.

My fate hath been decided and no other path shall bmade „ere my feet within the world.

O! A glimmer shines within the darkness of my vision…  A light, nimble and fading, flutters, ebbing in and out of existence.

There is hope for what comes. Hope still lingers within each of us, likthe fluttering of a thrush within the torment. We must strive taccomplish all of what must be done „ere the end.

May ye of fading hope, of falling dreams and of lingering darkness findsome solace within these writings. Much must I write about „ere th

darkness diminishes the light o‟ my being … Alas, where to begin…•

From the journal of  Heregrim

September 3rd, 2010I can‟t say I would have expectedmuch less. The long way from theIron Hills has led me into countlessencounters with the evil creatures who serve the shadow. I have beenlucky until this day, for I still standin my feet.

September 3rd, 2010For the beard of my ancestors! Adwarf like myself can‟t rely on thelonely mountains anymore.Everywhere I go, is infested withthose nasty beasts. Shame on the

Dourhands, for engaging in evildeeds with those horrible monsters.

Dwalin should learn from this tonot be as trustful as he is. Not alldwarves are among those whom wecan call trustful.

Oh, but in what kind of world are we living when you must doubt the word even from a dwarf!

September 4th, 2010 We dwarves have a lot of things onour hands right now here at  Thorin‟s gate. Our situation withthe Dourhands has worsened. They steal our gold and walk our landsdishonoring the name of thedwarves.

You know dwarves well if you

know we are distrustful of theelves. Since the battle of the fivearmies in 2941, I can‟t rememberany deep collaboration between ourraces. But thanks to those wretchedDourhands, our race is facing another danger: a possibility of waragainst the elves.

Dwarves can be stubborn I mustadmit. But so can the elves and thisis the proof. The elves won‟t take

Defense of BreetownBy  Luxbra (Elendilmir)

I was feeling really proud of myself.I had bought a large house for me

and my sisters, San and Luxmar. We were going to be a family again, but Middle-Earth in wartime can  wreak havoc on any plans. Ardahas little respect for the wishes of man or elf.

When riding towards Bree one day,I was shocked to see two dozenbrigands, accompanied by all kindsof beasties, storming the southerngate. I kicked my horse, Kiri, and

galloped to the gate. When Iarrived, I saw the guards dead atthe gate. Fires and screamsemanated from the north. I leftKiri tied at the southern entranceand ran straight to the jail to see if my sister, Santanica, was still safely locked up.

When I arrived, there was nolonger anyone in the stock. The

front door of the jailhouse wassmashed in. I drew my sword andran inside. The brigands andguards were engaged in a scuffle.Behind them I saw another brigandtrying to free someone from a jailcell. I sheathed my sword, drew my bow and placed two arrows inthe man‟s back.

Hearing someone come up behind

me, I whipped around and taggedthe brigand in the face with the endof my bow. Tralli and the otherguards had the brigands backed upto the front door, so I randownstairs to check on San. She  was on the floor, sleeping like ababy, with her herald, Rochettestanding watch over her. I gaveRochette my boot knife anddirected her to defend San with herlife.(continued on p. 12)

An Extraordinary AdventureBy  Bibbsy the Burg

“Gather around and hear my tale –a tale of adventure, danger and  woe. Sit by the hearth and openyour ears and such a tale you willhear.”

It all began one fine summer nightin the kitchen of my hobbit hole.I was making myself several meatpies, when all of a sudden thesound of a patter of hooves camedown the road. I peered over mygarden fence and saw BounderBoffin out in the middle of the

road.

“Now, what is he doing outthere?” I asked myself. No soonerhad I started towards him than ablack rider came galloping up on amidnight black stead. It was everso frightening! The strangerlooked ever so frightening as itleaned down to hiss something ...“ennsss…” Not receiving the

answer it was looking for, thestranger reared his horse up androde past us, nearly knockingBounder Boffin down!

After collecting his wits, Boffintold me to go and get a weaponfrom his bag. Well, let me tell you –  I am a very respectable hobbitand had never in my life heldsomething more dangerous than a

spade or a butter knife! The veryidea was absurd! But Boffinconvinced me that if I did not finda weapon, the mysterious stranger would come back to kill me.

With great trepidation I choose aknife with a six inch blade andlooked as though it could cutthrough a small tree in a singleswipe! I ran after Boffin who washeaded towards Old Odo‟s Farm.

September 5th, 2010  There is much greater evil in the works by the shadows that extendfrom Angmar. Before I could helpin the rescue of the elven prince, Ihad to deal with some creaturesI‟ve only heard in the tales of theolder dwarves. Horrible undeadskeletons, minions of the evil dark

lord. Such things are only possible

through the forbidden art of necromancy.

Our enemy is of great powerindeed. Yet here we are - elves anddwarves about to spill unnecessary

blood. Can we not see pass thistrickery? The enemy gets stronger, and fortifies its walls, while we,enemies of the shadow, divide andface each other. That‟s exactly  whatthe enemy wants.

For now, we‟ve cast away these evilmonsters from the lands of HaudhLin. But who knows for how long? However there was still a situation

going. I was pointed out that aranger named Langlas, who wassilent and deadly, would be willing to help me raid the Dourhandscampment at night. I searched forhim and he was already planning anattack.

We stormed through theDourhands lines, much to theirsurprise and demise. We left nosurvivors. But it was too late. Theprince had already left the placeand is to be sent away in one of theDourhands ships. We had riskedour lives for nothing. We mustmake haste now. I will do anything I can to prevent any furtherconflict, but there‟s only so muchthat I can do.

These are dark times indeed. Will Ibe strong enough to overcome

these shadows? Would all of us bestrong enough, or will the shadowsconsume us forever?

September 7th, 2010Perhaps I misjudged the elves.  When I heard about the rescue of the elven prince my thought wereof a weakling warrior whose prideand arrogance cost him hisfreedom, and probably was nothing

more than a royal charlatan, who

never knew the true ways of  warrior.

But I was wrong. Prince Avorthafought bravely side by side witme in our final attack against th

Dourhands. We were not going tstand for any more of themeddling in our free lands. EreLuin can breathe peace for moment now, thanks to a deacollaboration between elves andwarves. We‟ve put aside oudifferences, much like in the dayof old when Thorin Okenshieldhis companions and the dwarvefrom the Iron Hills, forged a

alliance with the elves and the meof the lake for the sake of agoodness. Our new collaboratiolead to the retreat of thDourhands, but they still oppose threat in the southside. Oujourney to stop the Dourhands inot complete.

Skorgrím escaped us. But not folong. My past is already staine with innocent blood. But there still a lot this dwarf can make tamend his mistakes.

Skorgrím Dourhand, I give yomy word as a dwarf, that I shanot rest again, until you and youevil Dourhands scum are banisheforever from all the free lands omen, dwarves and elves. Indeedyou have my word. •

Defense (cont. from p. 12) They ‟ll be cornered there. Withme.” I replied as I ran out thedoor.

As I made my way towards thePrancing Pony I saw scatteredfighting in the streets. I fought as Iran, helping as I could. I arrived atthe inn in time to stop a brigand  who was attempting to light thePony on fire.

Brigands started coming from boththe west and the south. Some withswords, some with torches, somecommanding beasts. I shot arrows

to one side as I fought them face toface on the other. An herbalistcame to give us a hand. I could notbelieve how poorly trained thebrigands were. Then again, Ithought, they ‟re only thieves. Ifought alongside the Breetownguard for what seemed like forever.  We must have killed two score of them. I emerged with some pretty deep wounds, but nothng fatal.

The herbalist was not so lucky.

 Adventure (cont. from p. 11)

What we found inside frightenedme almost as much as the black rider – spiders! Boffin engaged oneof them in combat, hacking andslashing at it. It was a very un-hobbit-like thing to do. As morebegan approaching, Boffin askedme to help him fight. The nerve!  This was a Bounder for goodness‟ sake! Weren‟t they supposed to bethe ones protecting the Shire fromdanger? But I couldn‟t leave him to

When the spiders were dead,Bounder Boffin told me to follow him through another door. Inside was the most gigantic spider web Ihad ever seen! We began to cutthrough the webs and fought off afew spiders along the way. It wasutterly terrifying!

We made it to the door just as

Celadine Brandybuck and MundoSackville-Baggins burst in. Both of them being highly respectablehobbits, it was a little unsettling tofind them screaming something about brigands chasing them. I hadlittle time to dwell on theirundignified behavior as they werequickly followed by three bandits.Muttering something about “therider deciding our fate,” they

proceeded to know all four of usout!

The next thing I knew, I woke upin a cell with two of the tall folk outside my door. Another man ranup and I thought for sure my life  was over. He surprised me by striking down the two menguarding me. He opened the doorto my cell and that of BounderBoffin. The man introduced

myself, “ What a strange name.” Ithought it odd to be associating  with one of the tall folk, but  wasn‟t about to give up my onechance at freedom, so I followedhim out the door.

“  We cannot stay here,” Stridersaid. I wholeheartedly agreed and with a mournful thought over my

pies, I followed him.•
