BreakRAKThis product wasreviewed by Mike Akerlow, who has been playingcompetitively for arelatively short period oftime. He had this to sayabout the BreakRAK, “Ididn’t really believe it atfirst but steadily I seemedto be more and moreconsistent. It’s like anyother shot the more timesyou shoot it the betteryou’re going to be at it. Itseemed like I saw animprovement almost rightaway. This amazing product will gave me instant results on improving my break.I was able to see first hand where I was striking the rack and where mycue ball ended up.”The BreakRAK simulates a rack of balls with this unique bow system. It issimple but accurate. It is well constructed and assembled for quick andeasy installation on my pool table. It is built to withstand the constantpunishment of continually breaking without losing any of its spring. Designedby Charley Bond, the BreakRAK can help you improve your breakdramatically.“Improving my break has always been a very time consuming and backbreaking task. Now with the BreakRAK I can simulate my break time aftertime after time without having to worry about re-racking. I can quickly dobreak after break. This gives me the advantage of gaining cue ball controlin a very short period of time. I can really see what’s happening on my

break because the other balls in therack are not there. I can see what willhappen with the cue ball if I break therack from a certain position or hit the

head ball with orwithout english.”Cue ball control isthe key to a goodbreak by leaving thecue ball in the centerof the table after thebreak. Mikeremarked, “With theBreakRAK I candevote more time toalign my stance, perfect my bridgeplacement, adjustmy grip on the cue,

position the contact point, develop my stroke strength and speed and watchmy follow through. By isolating my break all these things can be easilyadjusted on my next attempt without re-racking a set of balls.“ I found the BreakRAK easy to set up and in just a few minutes I wasready to start practicing my break. “If you are looking to try a differentbreak or try something new with your break, the BreakRAK is a quick andeasy way to see what will happen before you try it out in a game or incompetition. This can be a real advantage”, commented Mike.Pool players looking to improve their break should invest in the BreakRAK.It will be worth the price. More information is available on Charley’s websitewww.breakrak.com or call BreakRAK at (918) 543-6600 or (918) 637-1056 to order.

from: Chris Rogers and Ford, Tournament DirectorsOn March 29th and 30th, the NWPA opened its 2008 season once again at“The Parlor Billiards and Spirits” inBellevue. There were thirty fiveplayers ready to try out a new season, and without last year’s dominatingKyoko Sone, who is now a full timeWPBA tour player, the field seemswide open.Every Friday night before atournament the draw is done, andthere is always more than a fewplayers, husbands, etc there topractice and watch the seeding. Soon Saturday it was interesting to hearover and over how amazing TheParlor is, especially their happy hourprices where a long list of food itemsrange from $1.99 to $3.99 and drinkspecials are too many to name. Moregood news is that starting in May,happy hour prices will be available all day every Sunday.Matches started Saturday morning on time, but with such tight competition, there were 16 players still alive when we broke for the day, so Sunday wasa busy, full day. The A side had Elizabeth Jensen losing 7-3 to Linda Carterand Cindy Sliva getting past Suzanne Osborne 7-4. From the B side, KimJones, who has moved to Atlanta (which won’t be for long if Ford and I getour way) but was conveniently in town, marched through a tough field bybeating Kit Dennis 7-4, Mary Hopkin 7-4, Elizabeth J. 7-3, Suzanne O. 7-4,and in a rematch with Cindy S. who put her on the B side late Saturday, won 7-3.The finals, as always was one race to 9, and Kim continued hot by stakinga 4-0 lead, but Linda is too much a pro to be flustered and came back to tieit 4-4. After Kim got the next one, they traded games until Kim lead 8-7.The previous three breaks, two by Linda and one by Kim, each had left thenine hanging in the far left pocket, and then made on an early combo, andwith Kim breaking on the hill, she left it in the same spot. However, thistime a stray ball crossed from the side and pocketed the nine, giving Kimthe match.Congrats to Kim for qualifying for the WPBA Great Lakes Classic later thisyear (thank you Parlor Billiards for buying the $500.00 WPBA entry), andto Linda for such a strong showing. We would also like to thank Linda fordonating another trip to the NWPA to help raise money to make our end ofthe season tournament at WPBA Qualifier (get your tickets; we will beraffling off the trip in October). We will be in Lynnwood at Uncle Jacks inJune. Please visit the website www.nwpatour.com to view the 2008tournament dates. We’ll see you then.

On the winners side Michael Dodd worked hismagic and beat Dexter Lewis to take on Ray Comacho. After going 4-3Michael finally took the match sending Ray to the losers bracket. Next upMichael faced Chuck Hassler. Though Chuck played strong in the first twogames, Michael proved to be a tough opponent sending Chuck to join Dexand Ray in the losers bracket. From the lower side of the winners bracketJustin Barnes was proving to be the other dominant player besting AaronKoontz-Dalton, then taking out Frank Rose and Kit Cristopherson to faceMichael for the playoff pole position. This was another tough match but

There are someshots that are a loteasier and morepredictable thanthey look. The“ticky” is one ofthese shots. Thisshot comes topool from carombilliards. In a ticky, the object ball isusually quite closeto the cushion andthe cue ball

strikes the cushion just before the ball, then the ball, and then back to the samecushion. At pool, tickies are most useful when youcan’t hit a shot directly but there are timeswhen you are better off going to the railfirst even though you can see the wholetarget ball.Shot A shows an example from nine ballwhere you will either win or get a goodsafety. You are blocked from hitting theone ball directly. If you had no way to hitthe one ball, you should just pocket thenine with the four-nine combo. In thisparticular situation, hit rail first and thenthe one ball. If you use running English(left in this case) and follow on the cueball, it will naturally return to the cushionand spin into the nine ball. With a littlepractice, you can control the speed andthe path of the one ball to get a safe if you

miss by driving the one ball towardsthe X. Most beginners will hit thisshot too hard.If you don’t use the running Englishand follow, the angle will be far lessconsistent. If you have to pull thecue ball away from the rail aftercontact, draw the cue ball, but you

better practice first as it’s hard to control. Ifthe nine were not hung in the pocket, a goodplay would be to use draw on the cue ball tokeep it from going forwards towards thepocket. Even more draw will bring the cueball back to stick on the five ball. Both of thesedraw strategies assume that the path for theone ball is clear to get to the other end of thetable.Shot B is a possible safe play. You have nogood shot on the two ball and would like tostick the cue ball on the far cushion whilebringing the two ball to the other end of thetable. You could play the shot with draw toget a stop or stun shot, or you could play withfollow and a full hit to make the cue ball bendback to the far cushion. Both of thosemethods require you to hit the object ballpretty hard, and it might come back to thatend of the table. Instead, play the cue ball tohit the end cushion first as close to the objectball as possible. With a little left English, thecue ball will hit the two ball nearly full andreturn to the cushion. This is a very important shot to know, andyou also have to be familiar with its variations.During practice vary the distance of the objectball from the cushion and the angle ofapproach of the cue ball. In the illustratedposition, see if you can walk the cue ball overbetween the two balls and the cushion at Y.You will need to adjust the angle, spin andspeed to accomplish this. Finally, work for a while on pocketing the twoball into pocket Z. Check out the spot youneedto hitt h e

rail while standing near the two —how close do you have to come onthe inbound path to hit it towards thepocket? Of course for somepositions it’s impossible, but againtry to learn the angles and spins thatwork for a particular distance of thetwo from the rail.

Desert Classic Tour Q & A’s

1. What are the plans for theDesert Classic Tour this and nextyear and beyond? This year, our initial goal was to beable to do approximately 8successful tour stops throughoutthe state (mostly Tucson/Phoenixarea). We wanted to havesomething towards the end of theyear, right before Christmas, so wedecided to add achampionship tournament inDecember, with all of themembership money going tothat tourney. One importantthing to point out is this is anon profit tour in 2008.Jimmy and I are putting all ofthe money back into thetournaments, this includes, money from memberships, entry fees, etc...My initial goalwas to be able to match and/or top Chuck Bobbitt’s Desert DustOff, so that we could have two largeadded tourneys in Arizonathroughout the year. (He does morethan some people realize for AZ.Pool, and he is a big reason whythis tour got off the ground soquickly.) This means we needed togenerate over 5K in added moneyto the finale. We’ve already hit that.In the future, we would like to gathermore sponsorship $ and possiblymake each stop $1500 to $2000added, obviously with a much largeradded finale at the end of the year. Also, we plan on having possibly 9to 10 stops and one finale in thefuture. It would be nice to somedayhave a 25K added championshiptournament at the end of the year. Ithink that would really put Arizonaon the map for pool.

2. Now that you’ve had a coupleof stops, have you instituted anynew policies? Something thatmight include more players ormake the tour appealing to awider range of players fromoutside of the Arizona area?We have not really instituted anynew policies since the first stop. One thing we did modify at the first

stop was mock collars/turtle necksallowed and/or dress type shirts atthe events and no flip-flops.We also voted on money balls notcounting in bottom two cornerpockets on the break (for 9/10 ball),the vote to not allow them to countin the bottom two corners on thebreak was overwhelming.3. Who are your sponsors? We currently have 11sponsors:Chuck Bobbitt (Visual Impressions)is title sponsor/Al Terpstra LawOffices, Rick Schmitz (Rixx Pixx),Azpoolscene.com. az billiards infonewspaper, Nick Varner CustomCues/Cases, Dale Teague Customcues, Keith Nickerson CustomCues, Tiger Products, OnQcases,Jeff Pranke graphic design andleather wraps.

4. How many stops do you have?8 stops and one championshiptournament at end of the year, inDecember.5. Is there a year end tournamentplanned?Yes, already well over 5K addedguaranteed. We have 6 stops left, any membership moneyaccumulated or money earned

from raffles will go towards thisevent as well. This is a non profittour. Jimmy and I are throwingall of the money back into thistournament. The venue for theyear end tournament and thedate have yet to be determined. We are considering all ouroptions and will make anannouncement about the finalesometime later this summer.6. Have you started lookingtowards 2009 yet?

We’ve talked about it a little,Depending on how much successwe have this year, we will sit downand look at how we can improve itfor next year and beyond. This isthe first time we have taken on sucha huge task and we expect to makemistakes along the way. So longas we correct them and move on, Ithink each year will only be biggerand better. One thing we would liketo do next year is definitely add 1 or2 more tour stops. Being as we gotoff to a late start this year, we hadto limit it to 8.I would like to thank Dennis andJimmy for taking their time to talk tome and wish them the best withtheir tour. Hopefully OTBnTV will beable to come and film an event inthe near future.

by: Don “Cheese” AkerlowI had the pleasure of talking to Dennis Orender and Jimmy Mendoza, tour directors, about their plans for theDesert Classic Tour. Here is how it went.

ARCHER WINS DESERT SHOOTOUT AT KOLBY’S

Johnny Archer

by: Don “Cheese” AkerlowTEMPE, ARIZONAThe long awaited Desert Shootout finally came. Itwas touch and go there for a while whether the eventwas going to happen but it did. The venue was movedto Kolby’s in Tempe, Arizona within the last few daysbefore the start of the tournament. Chuck Bobbit, tournament organizer, with the help of Jay Helfertand Bull, tournament directors, along with Jimmyand the staff at Kolby’s worked hard to make Kolby’sinto the tournament venue within a few days. Theyadded bleacher seating for the spectators andcomfortable seating for the players. All play was onGold Crowns for the field of 64 of the best players inthe country with notable names like Mika Immonen,Johnny Archer, Earl Strickland, John Schmidt, MikeDavis, Oscar Dominguez, Charley Bryant, EfrenReyes, Jose Parica, Corey Deuel, Gabe Owen, andTony Robles just to name a few. There were crowds of maybe 200+ people on Fridayand Saturday nights. The Phoenix pool communitywas should be commended for their support of this event. They were agreat crowd and showed their appreciation of the good shots that weremade.Oscar Dominguez was impressive as always. He deserves to be playingat a top level and yes, this gentleman can play the game. Archer meanwhileis returning to his old form of the 90’s where he won 11 player of the yearawards and he seems to be hungry again. When he gets into total focushe is hard to beat and I believe he is on a quest to make it number 12. MikeDavis is another that always finishes high in all of the big tournaments andwhen he gets into stroke he is hard to beat. Charlie “Hillbilly” Bryant is likea long distance runner that will wear you down along with his chess likemind to map out a table. He can play fast and better but also slow if heneeds to. Mika the only description for him is that he is a great pool playerand probably Archer’s strongest challenge. Mika Immonen probably hadone of the toughest draws of the tournament beating Efren 9-7, Earl 9-6,Parica 9-4, and going hill-hill with Robb Saez before beating him. Then

John Schmidt 9-6 before playing Archer for thepoint. Mika beat Johnny in a hill-hill match 9-8.Recap from the Quarterfinals:This was a 10-Ball Tournament. The quarterfinalmatch saw Charlie “Hillbilly” Bryant meet MikeDavis. Mike sent Hillbilly packing and went on toface Johnny Archer in the semifinal match. Archerstarted off to an early lead but Davis never gave upbut Archer proved too tough and Davis had to settlefor third. This set up the finals Johnny Archer would have tobeat Mika Immonen twice to take home the title andthe $12,500 first place prize money. Archerstruggled during the earlier rounds of thetournament but seemed to have no problems whenhe faced Immonen in the finals. He jumped out to a3-0 lead and never looked back to take the first set9-2. The second set started with Mika taking thefirst game but Johnny came back and to win thenext four games. Mika then tied it up at 4 but from

there it was all Johnny. Mika only won one more game and Johnny won thesecond set 9-5.A special thanks should go out to the promoter Chuck Bobbitt forsponsorship as well as Jimmy at Kolby’s and staff. They did a great job forthe Phoenix pool community and showed their dedication to the game weall love. So stop in and show your appreciation.

Roger Long

REBOUNDINGBy Roger Long, Advanced Certified Instructor

I got beat last night! Boy did I ever getbeat last night. Out of 60 possiblematch- points, I scored a measly 9points. That’s all - 9 stinking points! That’s an all-time low for me. Heck, that’s not only a very low score; it’s ascore that a mere beginner would beashamed of. It was like I didn’t evenshow up for that meet. I must belosing it. Maybe I should just quit thisstupid game!I didn’t make up that little story in thepreceding paragraph; it really didhappen. I did, however, make upthose emotional reactions to it. Oh,

there was a time when those same hair-pulling thoughts did indeed runthrough my mind after humiliating defeats such as last night’s, but notanymore. You see, I’ve learned to rebound. Not as in basketball, but as insucking it up and moving on. And that’s something all pool players need tolearn if they are to stay in this game for very long. How do you go about learning to rebound? It’s easy!No it’s not - I’m pulling your leg again. Rebounding isn’t easy because itinvolves having to face some painful truths before you can begin to appreciatesome of the positive truths. Let’s look at some of these truths.Painful Truth #1: There are players everywhere who are just asskillful as you. You may think you’re the only player in your area to have“X”-number years of experience, or to practice “X”-number of hours eachweek, but you’re not. Those other players are going to win their fair shares.Painful Truth #2: The breaker is in the driver’s seat. If you don’tbreak well, you can expect to get beat - sometimes very severely.Painful Truth #3: You are no more unlucky than the next player.Everyone plays on the same equipment, therefore both you and youropponents will get both good and bad rolls on poor tables, and no one willbe able to control the cue ball with pinpoint precision every time.Sometimes, things will just happen the way they happen. No excuse willchange that.Painful Truth #4: Good, consistent play requires good, consistentpractice. Now,Positive Truth #1: You’re just as good a player today as you werelast week, last month, or last year. Even a humiliating defeat now and thencan’t change that. You’re just not bringing you’re A game every single time. But with some practice, you could be playing better again in no time.Positive Truth #2: No one with any level of intelligence is laughing atyou. That’s because they know two things: 1) the situation isn’t funny, and2) they know their turn is coming.Positive Truth #3: You have not lost any status with your friends andfamily because of your match defeat. They all still love and respect youand your game. They will probably respect you even more if they see yourebound from a bad loss, rather than sulking and pouting about it.Positive Truth #4: Pool is still just a game. It is not the end of theworld when you lose. Every day brings forth new promise. The day aftera bad loss should be the day you start rebounding. And one last thought: try to set aside your own pain and be happy for youropponent when he is successful against you. He should be genuinelycongratulated. After all, didn’t he just beat one heck of a player?

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - In January 2008 a new billiards website waslaunched by Roger Long & Associates. The name of the new site isArizBilliardsDirectory.com, and it is just that; a free directory to anythingand everything related to the billiards industry in the state of Arizona.Long’s new website recently caught the attention of Internet surfers whothen made many positive comments about it in discussion forums on otherbilliards websites. One poster even proposed thatArizBilliardsDirectory.com should be used as a model for websitespromoting pool in other states. One category on ArizBilliardsDirectory.com that garners a lot of interest -that being the list of rated players - also prompts a frequent question: whyaren’t 10,000+ rated players listed when that has long been the numberbelieved to be active in Arizona?Roger Long answers that question with, “Our data compilations, whichwere done over a four-year period by researching tournament and leaguereports in various billiards publications and by issuing many new ratings toplayers in our own tournaments, revealed that the actual number of currentlyactive tournament players in Arizona is more like 2,000-3,000.” Long furtherexplains that while a few active players may have somehow beenoverlooked by his researchers, the players can still be added anytime attheir own request. The really neat thing about this new rating service is that the list can beconstantly updated; meaning room owners and tournament directors willno longer have to attend ratings meetings or wait long spells to get updatedprintings. Instead, they can now e-mail in their changes daily, and thensimply go to their computers and print off the most recently updated list.So come visit us at www.arizbilliardsdirectory.com and see how we canbe of service to you.

by: Samm Diep (c) March 2008Tournament season is in full force and Vegas Nationals are just around thecorner. With the soaring prices of fuel these days, more and more people

are choosing to fly to events instead of drive. When flying, here are some useful tips for

hassle-free traveling:As pool players, it’s safe to assume that ifyou’re flying to a tournament with your cues, you will be checking a bag, no questions. Thedays of carrying our cues on the plane arebehind us. To make sure your cues arrive

where you do, always get to the airportAT LEAST one hour prior to boarding.Depending on the airport, you may wantto arrive even earlier.CHECKING IN

If necessary, check with your airline tosee if there’s a fee for checking a secondpiece of luggage (currently, United, USAirways, Northwest, and Delta are a few

charging $25 for this). If you’re flying with with them, SammsPocket.comoffers an assortment of oversized duffles that will hold both your cues andclothes together)

Make sure none of your bags are over 50 pounds. You could be assesseda charge for that too.

If you’re connecting, make sure you confirm your bags are checked in allthe way to your final destination.

Check in online whenever possible. Just about every airline offers onlinecheck-in within 24 hours before your flight time. Even if you don’t have aprinter, you can usually (re)print your boarding pass when you arrive at theticket counter.

Have your photo ID out of your purse/wallet from the time you arrive atthe airport until after you get through security.

If you checked in online, you still want to (re)confirm the departing gatenumber with the ticket agent after checking your bag(s).

Once you’ve checked your bag(s) in and they’re confirmed on the flight(the agent will let you know if you’ve checked in so late that it’s going to bequestionable whether or not your bags make it on the plane) - Now,RELAX... You should still try to get to your gate on time, but don’t panic ifthe security line is a mile long. It’s unlikely that the plane will take off withyour bags onboard but not your body. They will page you until you get to thegate.SECURITY

Try to wear comfortable, slip on shoes that are easy to remove. Pleasewear socks.

Have your boarding pass and ID out and ready when entering the securityline.

Make sure you do not have any liquids/gels over 3 oz with you. If you do, make sure they’re in a separate plastic zip-lock bag or use the

ones provided. Once your boarding pass and ID have been checked, put away your ID

(you don’t need it again) but keep your boarding pass out. Get your laptop out of its case and in a bin by itself. Your shoes, belt, and jacket can go into a separate bin together. Loose change, watches, keys, etc. can all go together in one of the

smaller bins. Make sure you zip up and secure all your bags before placing them on

the conveyer belt. Keep your boarding pass with you! Do not walk through the metal detector until you see the last of your

items enter the x-ray machine.Special Needs

If you suffer from motion sickness, make sure you take and pack(conveniently in a carry-on bag) your air sickness pills.

If you are susceptible to catching colds, make sure you take your Airbornand stock up on vitamin C and zinc approximately 2-24 hours prior to airportexposure.

You may also want to carry anti-bacteria wipes with you. Keep your hands clean. Avoid unnecessary contact with your eyes, ears, and nose. Try to practice good basic hygiene.

GENERAL Use a list when packing to help ensure you don’t forget anything before

and after. Clean out your pool case! You should consider doing this often anyway

but it will definitely help reduce any unnecessary weight. Also, get change/tokens at the tournament. This will also help keep the weight to a minimum.

Make sure you packed your extra chalk, tip tools, towel, and any otheressential accessories.

Bring an extra bag. Find a lightweight duffle or backpack that can fold upand fit into your luggage. Be prepared in the event that your luggage isoverweight or you bring some extras back with you.

Once you get to your terminal, check the gate assignment again beforewalking all the way there and realizing that it’s changed.

Try to wear pants/short with pockets. They come in handy. If you need a pillow or blanket, make sure you grab one or ask for one as

soon as you board. Supplies are usually limited. Dress in layers. It can get chilly on the plane. Dress comfortably. You’ll be sitting in whatever you’re wearing for the

next couple hours, or longer. Don’t forget to pack your music, books, games, pillow, snacks, and any

other essentials. And, of course, never leave your personal belongings unattended and

always check to make sure you haven’t left anything behind where everyou stop. There you have it! Now you’re a savvy flyer. We’ll see you in Vegas!PLEASE BE SURE TO VISIT POOLTIPJAR.COM. by Anne Craig - WPBASUNDAY, APRIL 13TH, 2008 – VIEJAS CASINOThe FinalsALLISON FISHER WINS THE 2008 SAN DIEGOCLASSICGerda Hofstatter’s valiant effort to come back from a4-1 deficit was for naught, as Allison Fisher held steadyto win the WPBA’s season opener at the Viejas Casino. It was a capacity crowd in the Dreamcatcher Theater;the lights were bright, the cameras were rolling, andboth competitors were ready to give the crowd a greatmatch. Allison won the lag, and in true form, brokeand ran the first rack. Gerda broke in game 2 and made

two balls on the break, answering back withher own break and run. Both players seemedcomfortable and in control.Game three saw Allison scratch on the break andGerda with ball in hand, had an open table.Amazingly, she scratched the cue ball in the sidepocket on the 3 ball after making it in the corner.Allison took advantage of the error and took the 2-1 lead. Gerda seemed shaken, and for the nextfew games, just couldn’t gain control of heremotions, missing a key 5 ball that would have tiedthe score and watching as Allison broke and ran inthe 5th rack.Down 4-1, Gerda and Allison tangled with amonster safety battle on the 2 ball in the 6th game.Allison blinked first after 7 tries at the stubborn twoball, and Gerda ran out. Allison came up dry on thesubsequent break, allowing Gerda to run out and the score was a muchcloser 4-3, Allison’s lead.To everyone’s horror, Gerda scratched off the 2 ball after she’d drawn thecue ball back dead into the lower corner pocket, attempting shape on the3, and Allison easily ran out and her lead once again grew to 2 games.Game 10 saw a key point in this match. Gerda broke, made a ball, ran outto the 3 but missed a tough cut. Allison was left with a long cut shot andmissed, leaving Gerda to make a great shot on it and allowing her to run tothe 8 ball. Gerda had left herself a long cut down the side rail and hernerves got the better of her. She missed it and sold that game out to Allison. The two game swing definitely put the pressure squarely on Gerda’sshoulders to stay tough and focused.Game 11 began and would prove to be the coup-de-grace in this match.Allison broke but came up empty. Gerda’s 1 ball shot wasn’t easy and shemissed it. Allison ran out to the 7 and promptly missed it, although shedidn’t leave Gerda an open pocket. Gerda and Allison once again matchedwits in a safety battle, with both locking up the 7 several times behind the 8ball. Gerda blinked first, allowing Allison an open shot, running out tothunderous applause and taking the title of the first WPBA Event of theseason.

Written by AHS Staff GLENDALE, AZ - Monday, 21 April 2008 Thursday Night division came to a close on the 17th and it was a nailbiter! With the top four teams battling it out at the Northern Lounge for a chanceat 1st place his was going to be nothing short of specatular. Going into thelast position night, the top 3 teams (Northern Lounge PLM, Knobby’sLounge Asylum & Northern Lounge Bulldawgs) all had a chance to moveup in the standing and take home a considerable increase in prize money. The Northern Lounge PLM went into position night able to take homethe bacon, or even drop as low as 3rd place. The Asylum were in secondand could take over 1st or drop to 3rd place. And the 3rd Place Bulldawgscould earn their way to second place with a big win over the Heavy Hittersof Alexanders and an Asylum loss. Despite all the scenario’s, PLM managed their first win over the Asylumkeeping the 1st place trophy at the Northern Lounge, and the Heavy Hittersplayed spoiler by ending the Bulldawgs run for second place with acommanding 4-1 win. The Thursday Night division is filled with great people, great teams & great skill! I hope to see every next season!

PLAYER SCORECARDS FOR EACH MATCH WILL PROVIDE VALUABLESTATISTICAL INFORMATIONApril 20, 2008 – Thousand Oaks, CA by Anne Craig – WPBAThe WPBA’s 2008 Season marks the first full year that its players will usescorecards to produce accurate stats of their matches and tournaments.First used at the 2007 WPBA Tour Championships, the new scorecardsinclude information such as lags won, balls on break, break and runs aswell as games won on break. The 2008 San Diego Classic introducedplayers to the new scorecards and each player kept track of the stats fortheir match.Kristi Carter – WPBA Board Member and the person responsible for collatingthe stats from each tournament, feels the benefit to the players isimmeasurable, “To be considered an upper-echelon sport, statistics needto be kept that are in depth and reliable. They are a major component togetting mainstream media coverage and it is a goal to position the WPBAas a viable and recognized professional sport. As players and fans, youwill have the opportunity to track individual players’ performances, see howthey pair against other players, and where they stand overall under variouscategories.”WPBA Top Pro and veteran match Commentator Dawn Hopkins feelsstrongly about stats, saying “As a commentator for WPBA/ESPN shows, having statistics is going to help me tremendously. These facts will enableme to compare the players in different areas of their game.”Actor and long-time WPBA Commentator Mitch Laurance states, “I've neverbeen able to look to the statistics of players on the WPBA Classic Tour asa particular event week progressed; until now. What a terrific feature thiswill be, to have access to the kind of sports-related stats that mean somuch when evaluating a player's performance during the heat ofcompetition. The ability to analyze key stats throughout the event will helpto further break down what makes different players successful, and I'msure will prove an invaluable aid to telling the full story of any given Tourstop."Top WPBA veteran Pro Belinda Calhoun had this to say when asked.“Statistics have been so sorely missed in women's pool. What do all majorsports have in common? Stats, stats, and more stats. Sports fans lovestatistics. It is a way for them to become personally involved. The morestats you can memorize and quote the higher the status you enjoy. Thecurrent score/stat sheet is a solid beginning for future plans to expand thestat program.”The WPBA will post stats from T.V. matches at each event, as well astrack and post all our players’ statistics. Check back to www.wpba.comafter each event for stat updates.

once again, Michael showed great skill in his safety play and shot makingsending Justin to the other side.In the losers bracket Harold Griggs, who was sent there by Chuck Hassler, was proving to be a tough competitor. Harold quickly dispatched Greg Wilcoxand Dex Lewis to face Kit Christopherson. This was a fine match withstrong safety play by both men with Kit finally taking the set to face Chuck.Chuck was there after beating Ernie Johnson who was sent to the losersbracket by Greg Wilcox. Once there though, Ernie proceeded to beat RayComacho and Frank Rose to face Chuck. After some tough play by bothplayers, Chuck finally sent Ernie to the showers and moved on face Kit.Again the games went back and forth with Chuck finally beating Kit andmoving on to play Justin Barnes. In another battle royal, the two playerswent toe to toe and battled it out with Chuck prevailing to sink the final nineball and take the match. By beating Kit, Chuck moved back to the winnersside for a rematch with Michael for the finals. Since Chuck had one lossand Michael had none, Chuck had to beat Michael twice to win but aftersome discussion, both players agreed to a race to nine for the win and thefirst place finish. The final set was a see-saw battle with the lead goingback and forth for several games. After a long day of play and with sevenwins each, both players were showing signs of brilliance followed by lapsesin focus. It could have gone either way but in the end Chuck prevailed totake the final game and the match.Houdini’s wants to thank all the players who participated and is lookingforward to the next big Eight Ball tourney in September.
