A word from the fair presidentFor many years the Brazoria

County Fair has been a part of my family.

I have memories of enjoying my wife and son riding the rides in the Carnival, to cooking in the BBQ

cook off with my late father and friends.

Now I get the opportu-nity to take my wife and

granddaughter every year to enjoy the activities. I have also had the pleasure of volunteering for the fair for many years. This year I have the Honor to serve as your 2017 President for the Brazoria County Fair Association.

In many ways the Brazoria County Fair is a “Community Reunion”. We get the chance to see

old friends and make new ones. We have the opportunity to make new memories with our family and develop those new friendships. These types of values are part of what makes Brazoria County a great place to live and raise a family.

Hundreds of volunteers work hard to host your fair every year. Our Elected Officials, Sponsors, and the entire community comes together to make sure the County Fair is an event that will be cherished by our families.

Come join us October 13th-21st. We will be cheering on our Friends and Family as they compete in the BBQ Cook Off, Livestock shows, and more. Take time to enjoy the CPRA Rodeo Finals, Carnival and Live Music Entertainment.

The fair has come a long way from its inception in 1910 and housing German prisoners of warBack in 1910, several of Brazoria

County’s civic leaders decided the area needed a forum for educating farmers and homemakers by rec-ognizing those who were most out-standing in each area of endeavor.

They visualized an event that would provide competition, enter-tainment, enjoyment, and an oppor-tunity to get together with friends. They wanted to provide a standard of excellence toward which county residents could work, to encourage continued improvement of the equal-ity of life in the area. Thus was born the first Brazoria County Fair.

Those early leaders would proba-bly be astounded at the evolution of the fair since that first one in 1910. They could hardly have envisioned a 120-acre fairgrounds dotted with permanent buildings, including a huge covered arena, the site of a multi-faceted, six-day annual event attracting almost a quarter of a mil-lion people.

History of the “modern” Brazo-ria County Fair begins in 1938, when Angleton Jaycees took over operation of several of the annual events. Although no fair organization officially existed that year, Jack Phil-lips of West Columbia recalls that

“a little exhibition of livestock was held…and the ladies showed their jams and jellies” on the courthouse lot.

Phillips missed only one Brazoria County Fair since 1938 during his lifetime. He was attending the Olym-pics in Mexico City during the 1968 fair. He served as president of the fair in 1957, 1967, and 1968.

After formation of the Brazoria County Fat Stock and Fair Associa-tion, the group bought a 20-acre fig orchard south of Angleton for use as fairgrounds. By 1947, another 30-acres had been added to the site, and throughout the years, more land has been bought and paid out as it became available.

The fair was canceled for three years during World War II, and the property was leased to the U.S. government as the site for a U.S. Signal Corps radar unit. After a little more than a year, however, the government decided to utilize the facilities as a prisoner of war camp.

A high fence topped with rows of barbed wire was placed around the property, with guard towers built at the corners. German war prisoners were moved to the site.

At one time, 200 of Rommel’s

crack North African Troops were among the prisoners housed there. Those who wanted to work for small wages helped area farmers in cotton or rice harvesting and other chores.

Several of these former prison-ers have visited Angleton in recent years, bringing their families to see where they were incarcerated and

where they waded through muddy rice fields or stooped for hours to pick cotton.

With the war’s end, the grounds were returned to the fair association for use, and in the years since, in good times and bad, in economic slumps and following devastating hurricanes, the fair has grown and expanded to the point that it is now

the largest county fair in Texas. But despite its tremendous growth and changes, the Brazoria County Fair is still a place where residents from various parts of the county gather to compete in agricultural and home-making and leisure-time pursuits, to recognize and encourage excel-lence, to visit friends, and to enjoy themselves in a family atmosphere.

CAER 2X5 BW

The Brazoria County Fair Asso-ciation is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities and scholarships to the youth of Brazoria County. Our fair is a nine-day annual event that takes place in October of every year. It is known for its old-fashioned fair atmosphere and traditional fair entertainment such as carnival rides, rodeo, concerts, concessions and livestock/agriculture displays. It attracts about a quarter million people and takes place in a 120-acre fairground with permanent buildings.

Brazoria County Fair is a planned event that provides competition, entertainment, enjoyment, and an opportunity for county residents and visitors to get together with friends. The fair provides people with a stan-dard of excellence, which all county residents could work to achieve and to encourage the continued improvement of the equality of life in Brazoria County.

BCFA conducts several events throughout the year, including the annual Science Fair in February; Game, Farm & Ranch Expo in April; Youth Summer Series Rodeo in June; Spike & Spurs Golf Classic in August; and the Kick-off Dinner and Dance in September.

Today, the Brazoria County Fair has approximately 2,000 members. The Board of Directors totals 99 county residents and a 26-member executive board, both of which over-see the different areas of the fair. It takes more than 500 volunteers to keep the fair association operating.

About the Brazoria County Fair Association

What is the Brazoria County Fair Youth Advisory Council? The Brazoria County Fair Youth

Advisory Council is a youth leader-ship development organization sponsored by the Brazoria County Fair Association, its members and the community.

The mission of the Youth Advisory Council (YAC’s) is to make a posi-tive difference in the fair itself and the lives of the youth of Brazoria County by developing their potential

for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through their participation in Fair activities.

The Council is comprised of youth representing all Brazoria County high schools, 4-H, FFA and the Community. All members are the leaders of the group and each member serves for one year.

All Youth Advisory Council members must be enrolled in high school for the school year, passing all classes and be recommended by one adult advisor that is willing to provide a letter of recommendation.

All members must be members of (or families’ members of) and exhibit in the Brazoria County Fair

(i.e., speech & essay, youth horse show, photography, student art, livestock, etc.). All members must have the written/signed approval of their parents/legal guardians, and their parents/legal guardians must be members of the Brazoria County Fair Association for 2017 and/or 2018.

Fairs go back a long ways. The first Agricultural Society in Ohio was founded in 1818 in Trumbull County. Ashtabula County claims that they held the first Agricultural Fair in 1823. Geauga County still lays claims to having the oldest continu-sus Agricultural Fair held in Ohio.

This will be the 25th annual CPRA Rodeo Finals held at the Brazoria County Fair. The competition will be from Oct.13-15, 6-9 p.m. at the Rodeo Arena. Cowboys from all over will be competing for $110,000 in added prize money, plus bonus funds. The event is sponsored by Bud Light and the Don Davis Dealerships.
