The Brawley Chamber Connection Brawley Chamber of Commerce Newsletter: Volume 1 January 2014
Dear Members:
Happy New Year everyone!
The Chamber is going to be a busy place in 2014. I’m excited about the new things we will
be doing, and about the new members who will be joining us. I’d like to once again thank the
Brawley community, as well as the Chamber board and staff, for welcoming me into this
wonderful community.
I’m very pleased to be partnering with the Small Business Development Center to bring a
variety of trainings to our members, beginning with Social Media in January. Social Media is
increasingly a part of our society, and all of us could benefit from it. A good social media
presence is critical to many businesses today, but a bad one can be incredibly damaging. This
first training will be fairly general, but if members request specific follow-up on Facebook,
Twitter, LinkedIn or other specific sites, we would be happy to provide that as well.
Another thing I’m excited about is increasing the visibility of the Governmental Affairs
Committee. We have our Meet the GAC event on January 8th, and hope to have several
“GAC Presents …” events in which we will invite representatives from the assembly, the
senate or other public figures to address our members here in the Valley.
Is it too soon to start talking about Cattle Call again? Of course not. We are recruiting new
members to help out with the Cattle Call Committee right now (email or call if you’re
interested) and we will be launching this year’s theme contest in the next month or two. We
are also considering ways to make Cattle Call more inclusive for businesses and members of
the community that want to be more involved.
So I’m resolved to work harder than ever this year to make membership in the Chamber a
great value, and to get out and meet as many members of the community as possible. On a
personal note, I’m also resolved to contribute more time in community service, and possibly
start writing a book. And, I would say to keeping my desk clean, but that would be asking
too much.
Respectfully,
Jason Zara Executive Director

The Chamber spends a lot of time keeping up on how political changes will impact the local business
community. If you want to learn more, come to our Meet the GAC event on January 8th. Members of the
Governmental Affairs Committee (GAC) will be on hand to hear from you about issues that you feel are
important. You can Meet the GAC at the Brawley Chamber of Commerce from 7:00 to 8:00 am, and our
regular GAC meeting will be from 8:00 to 9:00 am. Light refreshments will be served, please RSVP by 5pm
on Monday, January 6, 2014 at 760.344.3160 or by email at [email protected]
Our third Farmers Market is coming up on January 11th and it should be the biggest so far. Join us for a great selection
of produce, hand-made items, baked goods, food, music and more.
Join us at the Best Western on Main Street for our mixer January 23rd. Enjoy a chance to see their beautiful facility,
network with members of the business community, enjoy refreshments and win door prizes.
We did a survey a while back, and members told us they would be interested in training in Social
Media and Marketing. We are partnering with the Small Business Development Center to bring
you General Social Media for businesses on January 24th and Marketing Basics on February 21st.
Beginning in March we will host a six week start-up series for new and potential business owners.
Like I said before, this is the start of a busy year. And it should be a great one. -Jason

December 19, 2013 | From HRCalifornia Extra | 2014 Mileage Reimbursement Rates
On December 6, 2013, the Internal Revenue Service issued the 2014 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate
the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.
Beginning on Jan. 1, 2014, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:
56 cents per mile for business miles driven
23.5 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes
14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations
The business, medical, and moving expense rates decrease one-half cent from the 2013 rates. The charitable rate is
based on statute. The standard mileage rate for business is based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of
operating an automobile. The rate for medical and moving purposes is based on the variable costs.
Taxpayers always have the option of calculating the actual costs of using their vehicle rather than using the standard
mileage rates.
Under California Labor Code section 2802, employers must fully reimburse employees for all expenses actually and
necessarily incurred. Many employers typically choose to use the IRS mileage reimbursement rate, but its use is optional.
The Division of Labor Standards Enforcement has stated that using the IRS mileage rate will generally satisfy an
employer's obligation to reimburse for business related vehicle expenses, absent evidence to the contrary.
However, if an employee can show that the chosen mileage reimbursement rate, even the IRS rate, does not cover all
actual expenses the employee has incurred, the employer must pay the difference.
Business vehicle expenses do not include only gasoline, but also wear and tear (depreciation), repairs, oil, insurance and
other costs.
