That’s what being in a band is all about—the effort and

camaraderie!

Many thanks to all the band members and collectors who braved the awful weather to turn out . Special mention should go to Ann Osborne for her never ending support on

collections. Well done and thanks to you all.

A total of £2838.39 (to be precise!) was raised over the Christmas period which has pleased our Treasurer some-

what!

Thanks must also go to Keith Jones for his epic engagement reports. Not only do you have to thaw out after all these, but to then put pen to paper and remember everything is a commitment above and beyond the call of duty. I am sure you will enjoy reading his reports and see who the

Engagements Reports—by Keith Jones

PAGE 2 THE BRADWELL BUGLE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2010

Bletchley, Saturday 28th November

Organised by the Bletchley and Fenny Stratford Town Council, Bradwell Silver Band were part of an all

day event which was to culminate in the switching on of the Christmas lights. There were rides, attrac-

tions, festive food and live music from various schools and other groups on offer.

The Band had three playing sessions, the first two of which we managed to combine traditional carols

with some of the items from our folders that will be used in the forthcoming concerts. We were a bit

short on playing numbers but achieved a reasonable balance of sound with the ones we did have. It was a

bitterly cold afternoon and got colder as the dusk descended. Our last session only lasted for around

twenty minute and we were quite glad to get away, even if it did mean we missed the lights actually being

switched on by Father Christmas.

I did feel sorry for a very good female choir performing in the square who struggled to make themselves

heard above the background sounds of shoppers and fair ground rides. It‘s a pity that some sort of sound

amplification could not have been made available to them but they gamely stuck to their well presented

session.

Following the day’s events Robin received a very complimentary e-mail from one of the organisers, prais-

ing the players for their performance and saying what a friendly bunch we were!

My man of the match today was another close run thing but goes to Rachel who was really getting into

the Christmas spirit, bless her. Rachel literally lit up proceedings when she bought one of those flashing

light sabre sticks being sold by the street vendors. It was suggested we could use it for conducting in

the dark but we didn’t take up the offer this time!

Wednesday 2nd December, Concert with the Two Mile Ash School Choir—Stantonbury Theatre

A firm favourite of mine over the Christmas period, this ticks all the boxes! We had a packed theatre,

nearly one hundred children singing and an evening of local music-making at its very best.

After just one joint rehearsal, the evening began with the Band and choir in “Joy to the World”.

The Choir’s first item was “I Want to See Your Baby Boy” with piano accompaniment and percussion from

a former pupil who had been invited along for the evening.

This was followed by the band playing “Sleigh Ride” and then the choir’s sang ‘Il est né’ sung entirely in

the originally French. I commented to my colleague how well the soloist sang with perfect pronunciation

only to be told “Of course she did, she’s French”. That will teach me to listen to the announcements prop-

erly next time!

Fraser was the Band’s featured soloist tonight and he played “O Holy Night” to his usual high standard,

despite being very restricted for space as he stood to play on an extremely cramped stage.

The Choir responded with “Such A Tiny Child” which had the added accompaniment from two of their

number playing flutes. The Band played “All I Want for Christmas Is You” which went along at a fair old

lick before they we combined with the choir for “Christmas Swingalong” with the audience invited to join

in the singing of “Winter Wonderland”, “ All I Want For Christmas Are My Two Front Teeth” and “Have

Yourself A Very Merry Christmas”.

Engagements continued

For the next item, Orla, Adam and Georgia three youngsters from the choir who are also in the Band’s de-

velopment group took their place with the band for “Away in A Manger”.

The lively “Come and Join The Celebration” brought the first half to an excellent conclusion.

After the interval the choir resumed the concert with a song called “Have You Seen The Mistletoe?” with

accompaniment from a choir member on cornet. This young lady is being taught to play by the Woburn

Sands Band and gave a very confident performance.

The Band and choir performed “Carol Of The Drum” a Czech carol probably better known as “Little Drum-

mer Boy”. The Band then gave a rousing rendition of the Derek Broadbent arrangement “Ding Dong Christ-

mas” with the basses spot on with their Floral Dance entries.

The Choir sang the delightful “Cat and Mouse” carol followed by the Band playing “It’s Gonna Be A Cold

Cold Christmas”.

The Choir last solo item was the lively “Shepherd Boy” which is sung and played with a ragtime rhythm and

ends theatrically with the choir holding up their hands.

The Band’s own last solo item was the ever popular “Schneewalzer” which once again managed to get the

audience and choir joining in with the swaying.

The Band and choir combined for the finale which comprised “Jingle Bells”, “Rudolph The Red Nosed Rein-

deer” and ““We Wish You A Merry Christmas”

Under the leadership of Dorothy Courtman and with Peter Thorley as the accompanist, the Two Mile Ash

School Choir had once again attained a very high standard of performance. The Head Teacher of the

school thanked all concerned and said how proud she was of the choir, to see them all so well dressed and

singing like angels.

Presentations were made to the Mrs Courtman and Mr. Thorley and also to the Band before the Band

played “Jingle Bells” as the choir made their way off stage.

Guest players for the evening were Lisa and David with Steve on percussion.

The last word on this concert comes directly from the evening’s programme,

“To have the experience of singing to the accompaniment of a live band in a real theatre is a wonderful learning opportunity for the children of the choir. It is our sincere wish that the links forged between TMA choir and the Bradwell Silver Band will continue to enrich our musical experiences for many years to come.”

My man of the match award this evening goes to a young man who had carefully sorted out his music and

was certain he had it in the right order. Well he did have it in the right order but what he hadn’t realised

was that the programme list he had been looking at was for 2008! Fortunately this was noticed just in

time for someone to disappear off stage to pick up the right music. Step forward and accept your award

Luke Wilson!

Saturday 5th December, Stony Stratford

With the sad news on the passing away of Bill Holding, there was understandably a subdued mood as

Bradwell Band met at the Parish Church of St. Mary and St Giles for the annual Christmas Concert. The

first few items seemed to lack sparkle but after “Sleigh Ride” and “The Snowman” we begin to get into

the swing of things a bit more with “Stop The Cavalry”.

The first of three soloists in the programme was the flugel solo “Away In A Manger”, beautifully played

by Karen. The Band then provided the accompaniment for the singing of three Carols, It Came Upon The Midnight Clear, Silent Night and Good King Wenceslas.

“Ding Dong Christmas” had the audience tapping their feet and this was followed by Jack playing the cor-

net solo “A Winter’s Tale”. Jack performed very well, showing great stamina after having been playing for

most of the day with other musical ensembles.

Our final item of the first half was “Santa Claus-Trophobia”. This suffered from some hesitancy in en-

tries but picked up with some fine playing from the basses and trombones.

There was an interval and with it the chance of some refreshment before the second half began with a

raffle and then “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday” followed by “O Holy Night”, the euphonium solo

from Fraser. Given a lot more space than at the Stantonbury Theatre earlier in the week, Fraser used

the excellent acoustics of the Church to bring added warmth to his lyrical playing and his efforts were

warmly applauded by the audience.

The up tempo “All I Want For Christmas Is You” was closely followed by “Mistletoe and Wine” before the

audience was invited to sing three more carols, O Come All Ye Faithful ,O Little Town of Bethlehem, and The First Nowell. “Schneewalzer” got the circulation going and generated a bit of much needed warmth and “It’s Gonna Be A Cold Cold Christmas” was quite an apt piece to play as the temperature inside the

Church seemed have dropped even further. “Christmas Swingalong” was our final item and with it last

chance for the audience to join in. There were thanks from one of the organisers and we played “Jingle

Bells” as an encore and followed this with our usual sign off piece, “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”.

It had been quite hard going this evening but the Band seemed to relax more as the evening progressed.

Our guest players for the evening were Lisa, David and Tug.

Man of the match goes to a young man who is growing in confidence all the time and tonight in “Santa

Claus-Trophobia” led his section with great style and true trombone sound. Well done Laurence!

Sunday 6th December, British Heart Foundation Milton Keynes Santa Jog, Willen Lake The morning had started badly, torrential rain and high winds made the prospect of an open-air event in

December all the more daunting. However, as we made our way to Willen the rain stopped and after a

while the sun came out and it was now a lovely bright but cold morning. We had been allocated an area for

parking and this was much appreciated.

The Band set up mostly under cover outside the LA Fitness centre and next to the registration area. We

started playing around 10:00 a.m. as the entrants were going through the formalities of registering and

receiving their numbers and Santa suits.

Although we did not have a full band, with the instrumentation we did have we were able to play a mix-

ture of carols from the book plus some items from the concert folder.

We stopped at around 10:45 as the warm up for the jog began and at 11:00 the jog began. It is quite a

sight seeing so many Santas in one place!

During our break we were kindly given some Santa costumes of our own. All members, bar one humbug,

promptly put on at least part of this costume over their existing clothing. The problem with one size fits

all is that it doesn’t quite work but it is the thought that counts and we happily posed for photographs

before resuming our playing as the first runners were approaching the finish line.

We continued to play as the Santas continued to finish the course and stopped playing around 12:00.

The organisers were happy with our involvement and we had the opportunity of reaching a whole load of

people who would not normally get the chance to listen to brass band music. For our part it was good to

be involved with such a deserving cause.

Our thanks go to Robin who transported the chairs from the school so that we had something to sit on.

My man of the match today goes to someone you would not normally expect to wear a Santa costume. Not

only that, he obviously felt so comfortable in it he kept it on after the job finished and travelled home in

it. As he arrived home, his mother happened to peer out of her window and the look on her face when she

saw the unexpected sight of her son dressed as Father Christmas was priceless. Congratulations Fraser!

Monday 7th December, Bradwell WI Carol Concert, St James Church New Bradwell

This is an engagement we have had the pleasure of being associated with for a good number of years now.

Organised by the Bradwell Women’s Institute, it is attended by members of other groups in Milton

Keynes including Two Mile Ash, Shenley & Loughton and Central Milton Keynes.

After the traditional opening with the singing of “Jerusalem”, the evening followed the usual pattern of a

carol followed by a reading. Some of these reading are humorous, others are more thought provoking but

all go some way to setting the scene for the forthcoming festive season.

The band accompanied all of the eleven carols and also played some solo items. The audience enthusiasti-

cally joined in the swaying and leaping to the feet that “Schneewalzer” somehow somehow always man-

ages to induce and 14 year old Jack played “A Winter’s Tale”

PAGE 6 THE BRADWELL BUGLE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2010

During an interval hot drinks and mince pies were served and having been suitably refreshed, the audi-

ence and Band eventually returned to their seats ready for the second half.

In the second half as well as the carols, we also contributed the up tempo “All I Want For Christmas Is

You” and “Christmas Swingalong”.

After thanks from the organiser, we played “Jingle Bells” which prompted some of the ladies to dance a

conga around the church, never seen that before!

We thank our guest players for the evening, Tug and Liz.

My man of the match award was to someone who has demonstrated another side of his performing skills.

The selection “Christmas Swingalong” includes the song “All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front

Teeth” and calls for a wolf whistle half way through.

Over the years the Band has played this selection, many have tried but none has ever reached the

heights of such a piercing full blown whistle that this gentleman manages. So let’s hear some appreciation

for our principal wolf whistler, Mike Sanders!

Saturday 12th December, St. James Church New Bradwell

For the second time in a week we were back inside the Parish Church, this time for our annual Christmas

Concert. Before the concert began Brian paid a warm tribute to Bill Holding to whom this evening’s per-

formance was to be dedicated. We were delighted to have Bill’s granddaughter join the back row of cor-

nets for the concert.

All the items played this evening had been included in the Stony Stratford concert and included three

soloists, Karen with “Away in A Manger”, Susan playing “A Winter’s Tale” and Fraser with O Holy Night”.

The Development Band, conducted by Clive Keech, performed two carols, “As With Gladness Men Of Old”

and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” which showed the excellent progress they are making as a group. We

must remember to say thank you to all our senior members who give up their time to assist with the

teaching of these new players.

It seems so long since I could say, "Sister Susie sitting on a thistle!" Gosh oh gee, how happy I'd be, if I could only whistle

PAGE 7 THE BRADWELL BUGLE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2010

With a lot of other events taking place locally this evening, we were very pleased with the size of the

audience. We were thanked for our evening’s efforts by the Reverend Chris Collinge and signed off with

the usual “Jingle Bells” and “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”.

We thank our guest players for the evening, Lisa, David and Liz and to members of the Supporters Club

who performed the front of house duties.

Man of the match goes to somebody who for reasons best known to her self decided to wear a Santa

Claus outfit for the second half. Although the false beard was soon dispensed with, well done Sue for

getting in to the spirit of Christmas.

Sunday 13th December, Dobbies Garden Centre Bletchley

The Band had arranged for two playing sessions outside this very busy garden centre in Fenny Stratford.

The first session went from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. and we had a couple of breaks to shelter from short show-

ers of rain.

We had a good experienced group of players for the first session and this allowed us to play a lot of the

lesser used music from the Carol Books. We welcomed Tuba Joe back into our ranks as he was home from

university for the Christmas holidays. The playing sessions will have added to his further musical educa-

tion as he was introduced to the darker side of tuba playing with ad lib alternative endings to those

shown on the printed music.

The second session started at 1:30 p.m. We now had a smaller group of players who managed to keep a

balanced sound but unfortunately we had to curtail the session as there were not enough players to con-

tinue.

We thank those players who were there and especially the collectors for their efforts in raising a very

healthy sum of money towards the Band funds.

We didn’t have any winner today for the “What Instrument Will Vince Turn Up With Today?” sweepstake as he fooled us all by arriving with a cornet! Our thanks goes to guest player Tug.

Man of the match today has to be Joe for his contributions.

Tuesday 15th December. New Bradwell School Carol Concert

Unexpectedly, we learned a couple of days before the event that this was going to be an outdoor job.

One of the main reasons for this was due to the large number of people the school anticipated would be

attending. As can be imagined it was cold!

The Band and choir together opened with the carol “In The Bleak Mid Winter” before the Band played

“Sleigh Ride” and “The Snowman”, both appropriate pieces seeing how cold it now was!

The Choir sang “Panis Angelicus” followed by the Band playing “Stop The Cavalry” and “It’s Gonna Be A

Cold Cold Christmas” followed by three carols, “Joy To The World”, “Away In A Manger” with some hand

bells playing the first verse, and “O Come All Ye Faithful”. There was due to be a break but sensibly the

concert carried on as members of staff served up hot punch and other refreshments.

Engagements continued

PAGE 8 THE BRADWELL BUGLE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2010

“The band continued with “Christmas Swingalong”, “Mistletoe and Wine” and “Schneewalzer”. The Choir

sang “Adiemus” and a ukulele band livened up the proceedings with a unique rendition of “Rudolph The Red

Nosed Reindeer”

The evening was brought to a close with “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” and “Jingle Bells” as the au-

dience and choir left the playground to go home and warm themselves up.

Unfortunately, what should have been an enjoyable evening was spoiled because unless you were right in

front of the performing area you couldn’t really hear what was going on. As well as contributing musically,

some of the children had been selected to read passages relating to the Nativity.

As it was an outside event, the younger children were distracted and the adults who were not around the

stage just chatted very loudly with each other. Had it been inside people would have been able to hear

and see the proceeding and would not have talked amongst themselves. It’s a shame that the children and

their teachers who had been rehearsing for this evening were not given more attention and appreciation

for their efforts.

Man of the match goes to Brian for his efforts in holding the evening together under far from ideal con-

ditions.

Thursday 17th December, Bradville area Street Carolling

Sadly I was unable to go on this. I had been delayed by the heavy snow that fell around my place of work

during the day and it took me two and half hours to drive home. It was a bitterly cold night with the wind

chill factor making it extremely unpleasant to be out in the open. The players who were there deserved

medals and thanks to the efforts of the collectors a very good sum was realised.

Saturday 19th December, Stony Stratford High Street

The very cold weather of the past couple of days meant a difficult journey for most of the players but

we had an excellent turn out for our annual playing in the High Street on the Saturday before Christmas.

Our session was reduced to around two hours as we had a concert to perform in the evening but in the

time we were there we attracted a lot of interest. Hopefully our playing brought some Christmas spirit

to the good people of Stony Stratford.

Saturday 19th December, Wolverton Methodist Church

The streets and pavements around the Church were extremely treacherous. The audience wasn’t the

largest we have played to but were the best for their hearty singing of the Carols. The Band responded

well to the friendly reception we were given and gave probably their best concert performance of the

entire Christmas season. Soloists for the evening were Karen, Jack and Fraser.

Guest players were Tug, Lisa and David and it was nice to have Sian and Joe with us in their holiday from

University.

As we left the snow was beginning to fall again but everyone manage to drive home safely.

The Man of the Match award goes to someone who arrived in warm clothing expecting it to be an outdoor

engagement. So he had no white shirt or band jacket and had to play the concert wearing his fleece! Joe,

you really do liven things up!

Sunday 20th December, Stantonbury WMC, New Bradwell

The cold weather continues and the roads and pavements of New Bradwell were very icy as the daytime

temperatures had remained very low. However a very good audience welcomed us to the Side Club for the

longest standing traditional concert in our annual Christmas playing. This is one of the jobs where some-

times the audience seem to be more interested in talking to each other than listening to the Band but for

the most part responded well when invited to join in the Carol singing. They especially enjoyed

“Schneewalzer” and the whole club swayed and stood up at the appropriate places in the music.

Soloists for the evening were again Karen, Jack and Fraser.

Guest players were Tug (who had already

played at two previous engagements), Sian,

Lisa and David and a special thank you goes

to Steve whose percussion playing adds so

much to our performance.

This was a good concert to finish our indoor

playing for the year and Brian thanked the

Band for their efforts over this very busy

time.

Man of the match goes to one of our players

who rarely seeks the limelight (not with the

Band anyway!), happy to take his place with

the back row of the cornets.

Tonight for one night only he bravely agreed to be Father Christmas. Dressing up accordingly and as-

sisted by the lovely Sam dressed as an elf, Santa distributed sweets to the eager and excited young (and

not so young) members of the audience. Thanks Brin for being our Santa!

Wednesday 23rd December

It had been raining heavily all afternoon but this stopped just in time for our playing around the eastern

end of New Bradwell. With an excellent number of players and collectors we made good but careful pro-

gress on pavements which were quite treacherous, rainwater lying on top of the frozen snow and ice. Ra-

chel brought her family and friends along to help with the collecting and they were full of the joys of

Christmas! It was good to welcome Adam back from university for Christmas.

Man of the match goes to Tuba Joe who distributed chocolate as this was to be his last engagement be-

fore going away on holiday.

Engagements—The End..!!

PAGE 10 THE BRADWELL BUGLE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2010

Thursday 24th December

Another cold but dry night, we had a disappointing number of players and only one collector for this eve-

ning. With Luke Colvin volunteering to take a collecting box we started off in Bounty Street and made our

way round. As always, many people came to their doors to listen to the Band as we played in their street.

For many locals this is very much part and parcel of their Christmas.

We finished just after 9:00 and walked back to the school through the park on a still icy redway.

Man of the Match goes to Jack who had been struggling with a migraine all day but answered the call as

we were short of cornet players.

Friday 25th December

We were still in the grip of the recent icy weather and it was very cold start as we maintained the oldest

of Bradwell Band’s traditions. We managed to have 19 players out this morning and under the baton of our

Musical Director Brian Keech started off our Christmas morning playing on the corner of Caledonian Road

and Wallace Street. From there we played in Wood Street, Queen Anne Street, St. Mary Street, St.

James Street, St. Giles Street, King Edward Street, Bounty Street, School Street, High Street, Thom-

son Street, Harwood Street, Bradwell Road, Stanton Avenue and Althorpe Crescent.

The Band’s President Chris Collinge served up some much welcomed refreshments as we passed the vicar-

age. We finished up at Bradvue Crescent and had the usual long walk back down the hill to where the cars

were parked. Brian personally thanked the players for their efforts during the Christmas period which had

been made more difficult than usual because of the prolonged cold weather,

We were very pleased to have Tug, Adam, Sian, Kevin and Tim join us on this special morning.

Man of the match has to go to someone who left home at 4:30 a.m. to walk the considerable distance from

his home to New Bradwell. Not only that, he was carrying his trombone as well, that’s dedication for you.

Well done to Vince.
