Boots, City Centre

This was the third and final evening of providing some music inside the Boots store. A small group comprising

Sue, Sam, little Adam, Alison, Steph, Keith, Luke, Fraser and Robin gave us a great balance of instrumentation.

With spirits high because of the great result at Leicester last Sunday, we were in for an enjoyable session of music

making.

Being that much closer to Christmas we felt much more comfortable in playing more seasonal music. It was

noticeable that people were less likely to put money in the bucket if you played slower items so we kept it lively.

This meant playing some of the traditional carols but at a faster tempo than normal and it seemed to work well.

There was some really nice ensemble playing and many shoppers stopped to tell us how much they were enjoying

it. However one not so satisfied customer told us he had bought the Blaze Away CD but was disappointed by the

programme of music. He did ask if we had any others though!

We had a request from a mother to play a carol for her young daughter as it had been written by her great-great-

great-grandfather (I think I’ve got the number of greats correct!). This was "Once In Royal David's City" originally

written as poem by Cecil Frances Alexander in 1848 and a year later, the English organist Henry John

Gauntlett discovered the poem and set it to music.

Henry Gauntlett became the organist at his father's church in nearby Olney at the age of nine and made a name

for himself as an accomplished musician. Despite being offered the post of sub-organist at St Paul’s Cathedral as a

young man, his father discouraged him from a musical career and he became a solicitor in London.

He still found plenty of time for his music. By 1870, Gauntlett was reckoned to have written 10,000 hymn tunes,

his most famous being ‘Irby’ – which is the name of the tune used for Once in Royal David City. It is always nice to

receive requests to play specific items of music and especially in this instance from living descendants of the

composer.

Thanks to the players involved this evening and a small amount of money was collected towards Band funds.

WI Carol Concert

For a good many years, the Bradwell Silver Band has been invited to play at the annual Carol Concert organised

by the Bradwell Women’s Institute. Members from local WI groups including Bradwell, New Manor, Great

Linford, Two Mile Ash, Castlethorpe and Central Milton Keynes meet at St. James Church for an evening of carols

and seasonal readings. This has become an event that is much looked forward to as for many it is the start of

their Christmas festivities for the year.

On a cold evening, the Church was almost full and after words of welcome began with the singing of “Jerusalem”.

This was followed in the usual format of a carol being sung with accompaniment from the Band followed by a

reading from a representative of the various branches present. Some of these readings are of a religious nature

and others take a more humorous view of the festive season. In addition to the carols the Band have two slots

where they play on their own. This year we played “Ding Dong Christmas” and “Christmas Lullaby” in the first

half and followed this up with “The Snowman” and “Schneewaltzer” in the second.

Carols sung this evening were Once in royal David’s City, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, O Little Town of

Bethlehem, Away In A Manger, While Shepherds Watched Their Flicks By Night, Hark The Herald Angel Sing,

The First Nowell, The Holly and the Ivy, Angels from the Realms of Glory, Silent Night and O Come All Ye

Faithful.

After words of thanks for those who helped organise the evening, the programme ended with “Jingle Bells” and of

course “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”.

The audience clearly enjoyed their evening and Louis and little Adam did a splendid job in the interval selling the

Band’s CD. This was a good start to the busy weeks ahead of us.

Wednesday 5th December 2012

Concert with the Two Mile Ash School Choir

Held at the Stantonbury Theatre, this is a collaboration concert that the Band has been playing at for quite a few

years. There had been some heavy overnight snow and with the temperature not getting much above freezing, the

car park and approaches to the theatre were treacherous.

Despite the weather and a bout of sickness affecting some staff and children there was scarcely a spare seat to be

had as the children of the choir took their seats,

The concert started with “Deck The Halls” with the band playing the first verse and the choir joining in for the

singing of two more verses.

The choir and school orchestra numbering nearly 100 performers were as ever immaculately turned, There first

song with keyboard accompaniment “Stll, Still, Still” an Austrian Christmas carol and lullaby. In German its first

line is "Still, still, still, weil's Kindlein schlafen will!" (Hush, hush, hush, for the little child wants to sleep!)

The Band then played Leroy Anderson’s classic "Sleigh Ride” complete with a virtuoso performance from our

principal jinglebellist Louis. This tune is a firm favourite at this time of year but the words of the song never

specifically referenced any holiday or religion. In fact, the mention of "pumpkin pie" in the last verse might

suggest an association with Thanksgiving rather than Christmas. Special mention to Luke who improvised the

whip sound effect with two ordinary pieces of wood borrowed from backstage.

Engagement Reports—Keith Jones (Continued)

The choir gave us two short items, the lively “Village Revels” and “Mio Bambino” a song with a definite Italian

feel.

The Band and choir combined for “Christmas Candle”. The words were written by Donald Swann

an English composer, musician and entertainer best known for his partnership when performing comic songs

with Michael Flanders. He was born in Wales but his parents were refugees from the Russian Revolution. Donald

remembers his mother singing this traditional Russian melody to him and wrote the words to fit.

The Band’s next solo item was “I Believe In Father Christmas", a song by Greg Lake (a member of Emerson, Lake

& Palmer), with lyrics by Peter Sinfield. Although categorised as a Christmas song this was not Lake's intention

he claims to have written the song in protest at the commercialisation of Christmas. Another chance for Louis to

show off his skills with jingle bells!

There was delightful solo from a former pupil of Two Mile Ash who sang “Voi Che Sapete” from Mozart’s Marriage

of Figaro.

The choir sang the delightful carol “Mistletoe” with some super cornet playing from Casey, a pupil at Two Mile

Ash school and also a member of our development band.

The Band performed another favourite for this time of year, “Walking In The Air” was a song written by Howard

Blake for the 1982 animated film of Raymond Briggs' children's book The Snowman. In the film the song was

performed by St Paul's Cathedral choirboy Peter Auty. The subsequent single release, which reached number five

in the UK pop charts in 1985, the vocals were sung by Welsh chorister Aled Jones, who has since became a

popular television presenter.

Band and choir joined forces for “Noel” and then the audience were given the chance to join in with “I Wish It

Could Be Christmas Everyday" a popular Christmas song, first released in 1973 by the British glam

rock band Wizzard. Despite the song's strong, long-lasting popularity, it has reached no higher than No. 4 in

the UK singles chart, beaten to the 1973 Christmas number one by Slade's "Merry Christmas Everybody"

After the break for refreshments, the Band provided the accompaniment for “Come and Join The Celebration” and

John Rutter’s “Christmas Lullaby”. Rutter wrote both the text and music for this wonderful Christmas carol. He

followed the formula of using elements from the Christmas story -- holy Family in the manger, angels, and wise

men – and has a refrain of Ave Maria. I have only heard this in very recent years but is has become one of my

personal favourites.

The next Band item really needed little introduction and with the muted bugle call opening we launched into

“Stop The Cavalry”. Written by Jona Lewie, this curious mixture of an anti-war song with a brass band

arrangement is another favourite to be played on our radios at this time of year. Set in the Great War, the solider

stuck in the mud of the trenches is missing his loved ones at home and wishes he will be home for Christmas.

The choir sang “Shepherd Boy”, a song with a jazzy feel and enhanced with percussion.

"All I Want for Christmas Is You" an up tempo song written and performed by Mariah Carey. The lyrics claim that

the singer doesn’t care much for Christmas presents, all she wants is to spend time with her love one, sweet! I’d

settle for a present..

The choir sang “This The Time and the Season” and then it was back to the band and the ever popular

“Schneewalzer”. All about snow and played in a Bavarian style, I actually got to play this much earlier in the year

when guesting with another local band, weird!

The Band and choir joined together for the finale with “Jingle Bells” and “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”.

There were thanks for the evening’s performance from the deputy head teacher and presentations made. The

evening ended with the choir singing “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”.

So on a freezing night I am sure most of the audience would have gone home enchanted by the choir and

orchestra’s performance. With Mrs. Courtman conducting and Mr. Thorley providing the musical accompaniment,

the pupils of Two Mile Ash school should be more than happy with their efforts. To perform at such a young age in

a proper theatre and in front of a full audience should be something they remember for a very long time. The

combination of children singing and a brass band playing seem to be the ideal start of the festive season.

Thanks go to Lisa for helping us out tonight.

From the Two Mile Ash website

What a wonderful evening of singing at Stantonbury Theatre last night! We were all put in the festive mood with a

lovely variety of Christmas songs from around Europe. Our choir, made up of children from all year groups, and

Orchestra were amazing - singing and playing their hearts out for their parents and teachers! Accompanied by the

New Bradwell Silver Band, it was an evening to remember. Well done, everyone and Thank you to all those

involved for the hard work!

Quotes from children for Stantonbury

Shauna “It was so brilliant, I loved getting to stay up late!”

Aaliyah “It was great to show off our singing!”

Robyn “My parents came to watch me sing on stage for the first time, it was very special and I know they feel very

proud of me.”

Sophie “My family were really proud and afterwards everyone was still very excited!”

The Limes, Newport Pagnell

The Limes is a new independent establishment offering living apartments for older people and is situated next

door to our Westbury Grange Care Home, which has recently been extended to continue the provision of pioneered

person-centred dementia care. The Limes consists of up to 50 brand new apartments for individuals and couples,

offering 24-hour care and support. Additional new facilities for all residents include a restaurant, coffee shop, and

atrium and library/IT suite.

A group of twelve members met to provide some musical entertainment for a Christmas party. In addition to the

Band, the entertainment also included a children’s choir and some hand bell ringers. I did feel sorry for the bell

ringers as their efforts were all but drowned out by loud conversations taking place all around them. They

deserved a little bit more respect and appreciation. The original plan was for the Band to play some Christmas

music for a while and then to accompany some Carol singing. In the event, the proceedings were to take a different

route. We were launched straight into Carol singing, with most of them being sung with gusto by the many

residents, families and staff gathered, many of them in Victorian dress.

There was then a reading from Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol”. This went on a bit longer than most

people seemed to be expecting before the carol singing restarted. We ended with “Jingle Bells” and “We Wish You

A Merry Christmas”.

It was great to have Sue with us again and well done to Dan who ended up playing the baritone. Also thanks go to

Adam for leading us through the carols.

Saturday 8th December 2012

Kingston Shopping Centre

It was a chilly Saturday morning as we assembled in the foyer of the shopping mall. Fortunately we were playing

inside, although there was a cold blast every time the automatic doors opened. However to make us as comfortable

as possible we did also have the benefit of a coffee shop next to us and the usual facilities available in nearby Tesco

store. During the course of our time there we had up to eighteen players at any one time and a good sound was

maintained throughout the nearly four hours of playing time. Players were offered the opportunity for breaks from

playing as required and we played a mixture of tunes from the carol books as well as items from the Christmas

folders.

Adam, Orla and Tanya took it turn to add to our performance on the jingle bells for some of the items. Thanks to

Sam and Jonathan and Orla’s Mum who collected on our behalf.

Due to an unfortunate mix up, another band had also arrived expecting to play but it appeared that the

permission they had was from a store and not the shopping centre management. It seemed to be resolved amicably

enough and one of their members posted a video of the band playing “Coventry Carol” which he confesses was one

of his personal favourites but which his own band never plays!

Concert at Potterspury Village Hall

The cold freezing temperatures of earlier in the week had thankfully turned warmer as we made the short journey

up the A5 for our concert. The previous two years our journeys had been considerably more difficult because of

snow and ice.

The villagers had gathered for an evening of Christmas music and as usual fully joined in with the singing of

carols and other well known songs.

We began with “Sleigh Ride”, and followed with “The Snowman”, “I Believe in Father Christmas” and “Christmas

Lullaby”.

The audience were invited to join in the singing of some well loved Carols, Good King Wenceslas, Once In Royal

David’s City, See Amid The Winter Snow, and O Come All Ye Faithful

The Band resumed with “Ding Dong Christmas”, “Stop The Cavalry” and ended the first half with “Santa Claus

Trophobia”.

There was an interval during which refreshments were available and the chance to buy some raffle tickets. The

organisers drew the numbers prior to the start of the second half and several Band members were delighted to

find they had winning tickets.

We continued the concert with “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day”, “Mistletoe and Wine”, “All I Want For

Christmas Is You” and “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”

By this time the village hall had warmed up so much it was decided that we dispense with uniform jackets to

make the players a bit more comfortable.

There were some more Carols, Joy To The World, Away In A Manager, and While Shepherds Watched before the

audience joined in enthusiastically with swaying along to the ever popular “Schneewalzer”. The tempo was slowed

down with “Christmas Song” before our final item of the published programme, “Savoy Christmas Medley”. We

had not played this for a number of years but it used to be a great favourite with both Band and audience.

The Savoy Orpheans were a British dance band of the 1920s and resident at the famous Savoy Hotel in London,

between 1923 and 1927. The band was formed by Debroy Somers, an ex-army bandmaster and he arranged music

for his band to be played in the popular dance rhythms of the roaring twenties.

This selection of seasonal tunes was arranged as a foxtrot. After an opening of bell chimes we are treated to “The

First Nowell”, “Landlord Fill the Flowing Bowl”, “Little Brown Jug”, “God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen”, “Good King

Wenceslas” “Vicar of Bray”, “The Moon Shines Bright” a reprise of “The First Nowell” and “Auld Lang Syne”.

There was some hearty singing from Band members and audience.

After words of thanks we ended the evening by playing “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer” and finishing with “We

Wish You A Merry Christmas”.

It had been a good concert although without percussion it was not always easy to keep the music as lively as we

could and the playing did get a bit loud in places The audience was slightly down in numbers from previous years

but those there seemed to enjoy themselves and will hopefully have been put in the Christmas spirit. We were

pleased to have Sue playing with us this evening and thanks go to Dan for switching to cover on the back row.

Concert at St James Church, New Bradwell

The milder temperature continued as we gathered for our annual Christmas Concert in the Parish Church. We

performed more or less the same programme as used the previous evening. The second half opened with two items

from our development band. Under the direction of Clive they played “Santa’s Socks” and “Reindeer Express”.

It was great to have Toby with us on percussion for the whole of the concert. For someone so young he has a lot of

confidence and technical ability and this helped to keep the music lively. Thanks for playing help from Lisa and

Joe and to members of the Supporters Club for taking care of the front of house duties.

Street Carolling

On a reasonably mild and dry evening we started our street carolling for this year by meeting outside Haileys

Comet in Bradville. We covered Bradwell Road, Stanton Avenue, Edwards Croft, Althorpe Crescent, Abbey Way,

Mercers Drive. We had 14 players and a good turn out of collectors including Peter, Ann and Dave S and in under

two hours of actual playing time we managed to collect a very good sum of money.

Thursday 20th December 2012

Street Carolling

On a wet evening we met at the school to do our tour of the eastern parts of New Bradwell. We had more players

than earlier in the week and a whole army of collectors. Starting in High Street, we moved on to School Street but

only managed to play one carol there as apparently one household had only just managed to get a child off to sleep

so we moved on to accommodate them. We continued in Glyn Street, North Street, Thomson Street, Bridgeway,

Harwood Street, Chipperfield Close and then back to Newport Road. Once again we were treating to drinks and

mince pies by one of the residents and these were much appreciated and enjoyed.

Thanks to all the collectors and to Jack who joined our cornet section. It always nice to have former players join in

with us at this time of year.

Saturday 22nd December 2012

Old Bradwell Sports Club

Following on from last year’s successful concert, we returned to Old Bradwell for another enjoyable evening. We

had to wait for a darts match to be concluded before we could set up and the concert started later than we had

been expecting. However the Club was almost full with people of all ages looking forward to getting into the festive

spirit. We did not have a full band but there was more than enough in one of smallest venues we play in at this

time of the year. The playing was good throughout and there was a lot of interest shown in the Band by the

youngsters amongst the audience. Their singing of some of the Carols was very impressive and it was great to

watch them getting involved. The organisers have already invited the Band back again next year so we must be

doing something right!

Thanks to Lisa, Jack and Tug for playing help this evening and to Louis and Adam for again successfully selling

some of the Band’s CDs.

Sunday 23rd December 2012

Stantonbury Social Workmens Club

The weather continued to be mild and damp, in direct contrast to last year when the journey to the club was made

very difficult with sheet ice and freezing temperatures.

Quite a few of our members were suffering from cold and flu symptoms but with almost a full Band we were able

to present a concert in a venue that the Bradwell Band has performed at for many years. The programme was the

same as used during this period but had a good mix of Christmas classics, old and new as well as the opportunity

for joining in with some well known Carols.

The concert was played to the usual background of loud conversations and excited children but the audience did

join in enthusiastically. The highlight of the evening for many of the youngsters in the audience was the

appearance of Father Christmas and his good lady. Dressed in authentic costumes and pulling a wooden sleigh,

they distributed sweets to the children and posed patiently for many photographs as parents wanted to capture

the memory.

It had been a good concert and if they were not always as attentive as they could have been, I am sure most of the

audience had enjoyed our annual offering of Christmas music. This will have helped them get in the mood for the

coming days of festivities and we know that many of the locals look forward to hearing the Band around their

streets at this time of year. Their continued support of our endeavours is much appreciated.

Thanks to Lisa, Tug and Jack for playing help and to Peter for his starring role as Father Christmas.

And so ends the formal concerts for 2012. December had been another hectic time in what has been a busy year for

the Bradwell Silver Band. The Musical Director and players should all be commended for their commitment in

providing traditional live musical entertainment to so many people.

Monday 24th December 2012

Street Carolling

The Traditional Christmas Eve tour of the streets started in Bounty Street and worked its way round Queen

Anne Street, King Edward Street, St Giles Street, St James Street and St Mary Street. We then went along

Newport Road to Wood Street and Caledonian Road before finishing up in Wallace Street. It was good to have

Luke Wilson and Sian out with us tonight and many thanks to the collectors. As usual we created a lot of interest

as we made our way round and there seemed to be even more people this year waiting for us in every street.

Tuesday 25th December 2012

Street Carolling

On a mild Christmas morning, we had an excellent turn out of players meet at the Clock Tower under the

leadership of Musical Director Brian Keech. With a 6:00 a.m. start we set off on a tradition that has is now in its

112th consecutive year. Our playing numbers were boosted by a number of former members joining us for the

occasion. We were very pleased to have with us Mike Buffham, Nicky Davy, Tug, Jack, Luke and Sian. Starting in

Caledonian Road we covered all the streets up to and including Bradvue Crescent, finishing up just before 9:00

a.m.

After the long walk back down to where the cars were parked, I eventually got home just before the rain began to

fall and cleaned the instrument before packing it away in the case for the last time this year. I then had the even

more traditional but less pleasurable task of cleaning the dog mess from the shoes before finally I could begin my

own personal Christmas. It had been another busy period with lots of engagements and some excellent collections

of money which will ensure that the Band has a healthy bank balance to take into the New Year. There really is a

feel good factor about being with the Band at this time of year and it is great to see how as each year passes we

seem to be so very much a part of Christmas for the locals of New Bradwell and beyond.
