DESIGN DAYS DUBAI 2016 98 THE BOOK

Welcome to the fth edition of Design Days Dubai. This isa thrilling chapter for the fair as we r eady ourselves topresent to you the strongest representation of design inthe Middle East, in particular of the Gulf region. It has beena fantastic ve-year journey to reach this point.

Back in 2012, we were the rst design event in Dubai, andremain the rst collectible design fair in the Middle Eastand South Asia and the world’s most diverse design event. We are fortunate to retain this position and owe much tothe extraordinary support of the authorities of Dubai, rstand foremost Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, as well asour faithful sponsors, Van Cleef & Arpels, Emaar and Audi, who have remained with us since our rst edition.

What I cherish most is witnessing the incredible energyDesign Days Dubai has created for the local design scene, generating initiatives, ideas, talent and recently seeing thelaunch of the Dubai Design District (d3), our partner onmany of our initiatives including t he public programme.

Our format is unique with our strong focus oncontemporary design, our wish to showcase freshand emerging talents alongside the best of the world-renowned design galleries.

To celebrate our ve years, we present WASL, supported

by d3 and Dubai Culture, the most comprehensiveexhibition of UAE-based design talents. ‘Wasl’ is alsoDubai’s original name, meaning “connections”, a factorthat has been key to the City’s success.

Design is now totally part of Dubai’s DNA and it is witheven more excitement that I am looking ahead. Togetherwith Downtown Design and Dubai Design Week, wehave created a tangible change in the perception ofdesign. From an artistic point of view at Design DaysDubai to a city-wide public celebration in October; andas fair of discoveries, we have offered new regional andinternational talents a great platform to show their workto the world.

Design Days Dubai has been pioneering for design in the

region and we will carry on this mission from 2017 with astrong new format and location.

But before that, I am honoured to welcoming you to the2016 edition of Design Days Dubai.

DESIGN DAYS DUBAI 2016 3130 THE BOOK

URBAN ZAHARSCAPESTarik Al Zaharna

For many, Dubai is a name synonymous withopulence, indulgence and accessible luxury thatis unparalleled anywhere else. That is, or atleast was, how Dubai was largely looked uponby international designers and architects whohadn’t dare venture to the Emirate.

Admittedly so, I too had personally adoptedthis attitude while a student at The BartlettSchool of Architecture. An inquisitive mind - andalso probably an attractive Emirate Airlinesdeal – had brought me to the city in 2008. Onarrival and rst impressions Dubai had playedright into the preconceptions I had of the city. However, there was something – I couldn’t tellwhat, that drew me to it. Perhaps its constant

state of ‘building’ or maybe it was the balanceof European building methods set in an Arablandscape. What intrigued me the most werenot the high-rise, immaculately kept (perhapsdue to lack of use then( towers. Instead theintrigue came the fragmentation of t he city. The city voids lacked program and eagerlyawaited development.

The International Community watched eagerlyas the city was overcoming its ‘teething’ earlydevelopment phase, and large architecturecorporations swiftly designed and built several‘city centers’, yet stood almost idle when itcame to resolving architectural formulas onpedestrian level. Without the architectural jargon: the city was full of complex andconfused towers, with very little happening onstreet level. It wasn’t people-friendly.

When I rst landed here, I landed into a crux.My rst attempt at voicing this came in one ofthe rst Dubai held Pecha Kucha talks. Thiswas perhaps an early indication that there wasan already growing community of creativeswho were intrigued by Dubai. Six minutes andforty seconds were all I had to address issuesof scale, context and culture. Almost eightyears later, these are still topics we address at

T.ZED Architects – An Architecture and Designpractice I have founded to cater to t he growingdemand for projects that are of cont extual andcultural relevance. It is fair to say then, that thetopic deserved more attention than 20 slides toan audience.

The city ve years ago was almost bare andunexplored in comparison to what it is t oday.We are now on the doorstep of an era thatwill make Dubai the leading precedent as adesign hub in the region and a solid contenderinternationally. Sharjah, with its culturally-richand thriving art and culture initiatives to thenorth, and Abu Dhabi with its unprecedentedmuseum and cultural developments to the

south, Dubai is the perfect link to the chain t hatnow combines Art and Culture through Design.

As Architects and Designers we have foundthat over the last ve years, the need to inform)or humbly, educate( clients on the bene ts ofgood, intelligent design is slowly and steadilydecreasing. Value is progressively becomingless about ‘feature’ and more about contextand longevity. To supplement this, Dubai isincreasingly becoming home to many, includingthose who have already formulated theiropinion on the city as ‘arti cial’. With this hascome a shift in attitude in seeing new ideasto one of seeing new approach to Design andArchitecture. Whereby the thinking, researchand making process hold more value in theresult as they previously have.

Good Architects and Designers, in my opinion, are those who are capable of working withthe context they are occupying, and engagingwith it. It is about identifying a requirementand solving it through design. Dubai is ourcontext. It is a fast-moving, fragmentedurban-fabric that is projecting forward. It is acontext, successfully designed (dare I say) on amacro scale. This fast-pace of development is

balanced by a more ‘permanent’ population whoare now looking to counter the pace and engagethe city on a long-term, thought-through basis.

We are all makers in the city and are playingpart in ‘connecting the dots’. We are all, inone-way or another, not only part of butcreators of history in this modern phenomenon.Residents of Dubai have started to identify thisand appreciate that they are part of the microthat brings the macro to life. The result is aninvested interest in contextual, meaningfuldesign with purpose in whatever form that maycome in.

Initiatives such as Urban Commissions - alreadyin its second successful year of running, payhomage to this notion. Designing a multi-functional 30sqm public space in the city hasdrawn international interest with Architects andDesigners eager to be involved in addressingthe city’s context.

If anywhere or anything in the world is movingand happening, it is moving and happeninghere in Dubai. Architects, Designers as wellas those who seek them - and the public ingeneral are becoming more informed. Thegeneral consensus is that we all belong, and thebyproduct of that is a vested interest in creatinga better, design-driven context. As an Architect,I have identi ed this years ago. T.ZED Architects

is a byproduct of this city’s progression. Designculture in Dubai is gaining traction fast, andthis is only the beginning. If the last ve yearswere anything to go by then the future is notonly a hopeful one, but very much bright andpromising. Insha’Allah.

DESIGN DAYS DUBAI 2016 3332 THE BOOK

The United Arab Emirates’ urban centers areknown for their gleaming skylines, spectaculararchitecture and iconic buildings. They areevidence of a rapidly urbanizing society andrepresentative of a country that is lookingcon dently towards the future. Yet if one stepsaway from these visible signs of modernityand explores the traditional residentialneighborhoods of its cities — also known asSha’abiya (or Folk) — located at the fringes ofurban centers, a very interesting architecturalexperiment can be observed.

The National Pavilion of the United ArabEmirates at the upcoming 15th InternationalArchitecture Exhibition at the 2016 Venice

Biennale aims to highlight the case of theEmirati Sha’abi House. The theme respondsto the call by the Architecture Exhibition’sDirector for 2016, Alejandro Aravena, whotitled the upcoming edition of the ArchitectureExhibition ”Reporting from the Front.“ A Chileanarchitect and recent Pritzker prize winner,Aravena asked national pavilions to show howthe built environment can improve people’squality of life. In many ways, the theme of theNational Pavilion UAE is also a re ection of thearchitect’s own practice, Elemental; one of hiswell known projects is a low-income housingdevelopment in Chile, comprised of half- nishedhouses, which allows residents to ll in the

remaining parts at their own pace. Sha’abiya neighborhoods were planned in theearly 1970s to house what was then a fairlytransient population living in traditional housesmade of Arish )palm leaves( or tents. In orderto provide them with modern amenities anda higher standard of living, architects andlocal decision makers developed a housingmodel that was based on a courtyard typology, composed of a series of rooms overlooking acourtyard within a square shaped plan. Thiscame to be known as the Sha’abi or Folk house, and for many the rst time living in a modern

TRANSFORMING THE EMIRATI NATIONALHOUSE: MOVING BEYOND THE SPECTACLEYasser Elseshtawy

home.

Such neighborhoods were planned all overthe UAE; the design of houses underwent aseries of changes in allocated plot size anddetailing, in response to residents’ feedback, while the basic framework remained thesame. These houses proved to be highlyadaptable, with many residents carrying outalterations to make the basic models morecompatible with their changing lifestyles. Suchneighborhoods still exist and are occupiedby multiple generations of Emirati families.Speci c houses show evidence of a cumulativeaccretion of various architectural elementsover the years, representing a transformation

from a basic model to a house that has becomean important component of the UAE’s builtenvironment vernacular.

Over the years, the Sha’abi house has proven tobe a perfect example of an architecture that isan expression of local cultures and lifestyles, modi ed by its inhabitants. However, this is nota case of architecture without architects, butrather it is through the provision of a exiblemodel by the initial architects that residentswere able to modify these houses to t theirneeds. Architects in this case stepped back anddid not aim to design a rigid model.

The transformative aspect of this housing

model is of particular interest. People movedin and, over the years, modi ed the templateby adding rooms, decorative elements anddoorways, or changing color schemes. Theextent of change varied from one city andneighborhood to the next, yet the main idearemained: an architecture that people wereable to personalize to their need. As a r esultit became an expression of local culture andlifestyles. The modular, often pre-fabricated,elements of the housing design enabled theseaccretive changes, and functioned as a blankslate upon which people could project their

needs – whether functional or aesthetic. Theresult is an environment that is both functionallyresponsive and also visually interestingbecause it has resulted in architectural variety,a strong counterpoint to the repetitive and dullappearance of many contemporary projects.

Another signi cant component of the EmiratiNational House, which distinguishes itarchitecturally, is the extent of landscaping thatdominates many Sha’abi neighborhoods. Giventhe particular way in which the Sha’abiyat wereplanned, space was intentionally left in front ofthese houses for gardening purposes. Residentshave planted these spaces extensively, so thatmany houses have disappeared behind foliage

of palm trees and other types of trees. This hashumanized the environment and moderatedthe harsh climate of the UAE, something thatlacks in modern housing development, wheregardening is limited.

Given the proliferation of more recent housingprograms that allocate larger size plots andmore lavish buildings, many Emirati residents ofSha’abi houses have opted to move to greenerpastures, as it were. At the same time, lawshave been somewhat relaxed and changesin ownership structure allowing people torent out these homes, resulting in an in ux ofexpatriate laborers. However, many of theseneighborhoods and houses are still occupiedby Emirati families, such as al Maqam in Al AinMany long-time residents have refused to movefrom their homes given the strong attachmentand associated memories accumulated over theyears. And while newer developments dottingthe UAE landscape provide all the necessaryamenities, they lack a sense of community andthe visual diversity prevailing in the Sha’abineighborhoods, and various authorities suchas the Urban Planning Council in Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Housing Authority, and the AbuDhabi Tourism and Culture Authority recognize. All have looked to traditional neighborhoods in

attempts to extract lessons that would guidecontemporary developments. The Emirati National House, aside from offeringinsight into a signi cant aspect of the UAE’surban and architectural landscape, can alsosuggest lessons of wider signi cance. It is asuccessful example of a socially consciousarchitecture that is not speculative or iconic.Indeed, provision of decent housing for thedisadvantaged is a universal concern and thecase of the Emirati Sha’abi house demonstratesan adaptable and exible typology that respondsto the developing needs of residents. Within thecontext of the UAE and wider Gulf, highlightingsuch cases moves architectural discourse away

from spectacular and iconic architecture to thespaces of the everyday. It shows the ingenuity ofits residents.

For many, the built environment of UAEcities is associated with certain clichés ofarti ciality, ultra-luxurious developments and aconsumption-oriented society. Its residents arepassive recipients of architectures precludingtheir input. An environment is thus createdbased on exclusion and permeated with asense of transience and anomie. Yet by movingaway from these shallow views and engagingin a more substantive manner with its urbanenvironment a different picture emerges. Andthis is not just in Sha’abi neighborhoods. On thestreet corners and open spaces of the UAE’sneighborhoods exists an active and vibrantstreet life; residents in apartment blockspersonalize their surroundings, and informalgardens dotting the cities.

Through his eponymous multidisciplinary atelier, FadiSarieddine Design Studio (2013), Fadi brings his richarchitectural experience to his furniture by combiningform and function, giving life to practical and charmingobjects. Taking an experimental design approach, he takesunconventional materials out of their natural setting andapplies them as a new medium thus giving them a newidentity, and cleverly adds functions and compartments toan otherwise basic object.

The premise of this year's booth is space and function.A tale of loose elements put together in a compositionto serve a purpose without compromising on form.In an effort to make use of wasted space and scrapmaterial, the booth essentially revolves around upcycledobjects splattered across walls and expanding throughneglected spaces.

Shamsa Alabbar is an experimental line based onArabic typography to create unusual beauty. The

collection takes traditional Arabic calligraphy that hasbeen an integral part of Arabic culture for thousands ofyears and reworks it to create something unusual andsimultaneously beautiful.

As a graphic designer Shamsa always had a huge interestin typography, especially Arabic. Arabic typographyhas lots of rules, and those rules have to be respected;Shamsa tries her best to follow the basic guidelines whilstat the same time adding something new to it. The wholeidea behind the collection is to introduce letters as an artform. All pieces are not legible, they look like differentgeometric shapes put together to create a beautiful form.

Shamsa Alabbar is Arabic, edgy, modern, geometric andunusual and is designed with art and design lovers in

mind: people who are well educated about art and design, people who are not afraid of change and being different.

By Ghassan Salameh Studio / Presented by Iwan Maktabi

As an interdisciplinary conceptual and solution-oriented designer, Ghassan Salameh’s projectsoccupy an in-between space where productdesign and conceptual art meet. Contemporaryand experimental, his work is inspired by detailsfrom daily life, often unnoticed yet crucial inshaping our experiences.

Ghassan believes that design is aboutchallenging traditional craftsmanship bycreating new complexities of form andtechnique and opening it to new territory; eachobject he designs and produces is a celebrationof a successful marriage of concept andlabour, a fusion of creativity, expertise, history, technology and method.

Ghassan’s ‘Al Noor’ is a site speci c lightinginstallation composed of 8 unique handcrafted, woven metal tapestries. Each piece is uniquein its weaving pattern, material and colourcombinations combining red copper, brass, stainless steel and black metal.

Hung from the ceiling and layered, eachtapestry has a series of embedded LEDlights to transform its function fromdecorative to lighting. The re ection of thelight upon the metal woven mesh and ontothe surrounding space varies at differentangles, creating a visually attractive and eye-comforting environment.

Aligned with its mandate to support regionaland local talent, DDFC has commissioned Dubaibased design studio D04 Studio to create aninstallation for Design Days Dubai 2016. Titled'Flux', D04's installation was inspired by theever changing surfaces of the desert dunes andhow they freeze in a moment in time t o createhabitable and functional spaces. The installationuses both horizontal and vertical surfaces tocreate a new furniture typology that is a hybridof wall, oor and majlis seating. D04 Studio wasfounded in 2014 by four architects; Fatima AlZaabi, Khalda El Jack, Noora Al Awar and ReyanHana , who are graduates from the AmericanUniversity of Sharjah. Regional culture, craftsand resources are key aspects in their designpractice as seen in this installation.

'Flux' will house two pieces of furniture fromNM Collection; The Gela Mirror and The RueConsole inspired by art deco and Islamic art; an

innovative design fusion as both styles sharethe same inherent qualities that are rootedin geometry, symmetry and structure. TheNM Collection, created by Abu Dhabi-baseddesigners Fouad Mirza and Ritchie Nolasco,is proudly produced in Dubai. The objectiveof the collection is to bring local artisanaldesign and craftsmanship to the forefront ofthe furniture industry by featuring Arabesquedesign elements. Rising Dutch designer, a graduate of prestigiousDesign Academy Eindhoven, Lex Pott employsa raw and intuitive method. Working from hisstudio in an old shipyard on the NDSM-Terrein,one of the last fringes in Amsterdam, Lexreturns to the origin of the mat erials he usesmost: wood, stone and metal, reducing hisdesigns, materials and techniques used to theirvery essence.

"As a designer, I am not so concerned withstyling. I’d rather look at what a materialdoes, and is. Non-design is a movement. Inthis movement, it’s all about pureness, aboutproduct traceability. It’s a broader trend. Lookwhat’s happening with food right now. Peopledon’t like to be treated as mass consumersanymore. They are going for quality, love, and attention."

Lex’s performance during Design Days Dubaiexperiments with the sun, Dubai’s strongestnatural element. Live on site at the fair, Lex andhis team will develop photographic images onplant leaves using chlorophyll processing, anorganic photography process combining naturalsunlight and photosynthesis.

Monogram is a design rm proudly foundedand established in UAE. The design team andowners are local patriotic designers dedicatedto spread good designs that inspire, informand express identity. With language consideredthe backbone of any culture, Monogram hasdesigned Arabic letters as modern architecturalsculptures to symbolize the fast growingmultidimensional Emirati culture, and the needfor the Arabic language to keep pace with thisfast moving contemporary culture.

The one-off sculpture portrays the Arabicletter ‘waw’ which is also a conjunction wordmeaning “and“ that represents the sustainablelink between traditional Arabic culture andcontemporary life. From an Architecturalpoint of view, Monogram has explored ways t otransform the letter into a three dimensionalvisual language that re ects the United ArabEmirates, a culture that is urban, daring,

and multidimensional. As modern designers, Monogram has exploredthe inner and outer space of the letter in searchof nding new dimensions that explain itsformation, while maintaining its basic skeletalshape. Starting off with paper, the design studiocreated sculptures of what the letter wouldlook like if it was ‘set free’ from paper beforethen transforming the design into a threedimensional object.

The resulting ‘Waw’ is an abstract modernarchitectural sculpture that tells the storyof the letters escape from paper ‘Flatland’and encourage the public to spread Emirati

cultural identity and continue makingit multidimensional.

Urban Commissions is a design initiativelaunched by Dubai Culture & Arts Authority andDubai Design District (d3) in October 2014 tocelebrate the UAE’s growing design-consciousurban development and engage with the localdesign community and product industries.

The annual competition aims to engage withthe resident creative community and promotediverse local production industries by invitingboth students and professionals to propose adesign that is entirely locally-manufactured witha AED 50,000 grant and installed permanently inDubai Design District.

For Urban Commissions’ second edition, the brief was to design a public shelter thatwill become a meeting point for d3 users, establishing an important functional, social andcommunity building role within the community. The three nalists were selected by a group ofdesign professionals: Noora al Jamea - Dubai

Culture; Lindsey Miller - d3; Rawan Kashkoush- Art Dubai Group; Meitha al Mazr ooei - WTDMagazine; Audrey Miller - Eight Inc. and TarikAl-Zaharna - T.Zed Architects.

The winning design is by Hinjal Kumar, nal year Architecture student at American

University of Sharjah. Her submission proposesa shelter alongside a lifestyle transformation;‘Bike d3’ functions as a shaded nook for thed3 community and provides cyclists a parking

station. The structure is a spiral slatted bicyclestorage system, de ning intimate space andproviding shade whilst offering an alternativemode of commute in support of a healthierlifestyle.

“The shelter itself is sculptural in order to serveas a landmark and way nding tool ultimatelyleading people towards it. Realizing the designat full scale gives an architecture studentthe opportunity to visualize the project inmaterial reality. Additionally, it provides greatexposure to the inner-workings of the industry.“Says Hinjal.

The third edition of Urban Commissions will

be announced during Dubai Design Week,October 2016 - all those r esiding in theUAE are invited to participate, and grow itscreative consciousness.
