WELCOME TO THE BMLA CONFERENCE 2019

It gives me great pleasure to welcome to you to the 37th Annual Conference of the British Medical Laser Association, Park Inn by Radisson, Heathrow, London.

The BMLA conference is a unique platform for exchange of knowledge, ideas, recent advances, and everything else in the field of lasers and light based devices for all medics, surgeons, nurses, technicians, aestheticians and scientists who are directly or indirectly involved in the use of such devices for improving their patients’ and clients’ health and wellbeing. Whilst it is always a challenge to cater to such a diverse group of candidates, the BMLA has been accepting this challenge year on year and delivering high quality, evidence based, scientific programme to stimulate the minds of medical and aesthetic laser enthusiasts.

Like always, we start our conference with laser core of knowledge and skin courses. These courses are highly subscribed and the demand for spaces has grown year on year. By popular demand, hair removal and vascular lasers are now 2 separate courses.

Not only do we have dedicated conference sessions for skin laser treatments, photodynamic therapy and biophotonics, use of lasers in surgery; the 2019 BMLA conference will see a new session on ‘Lasers in Dentistry’.

The BMLA prides itself in being inclusive and we will continue to have a dedicated ‘nurses and therapists’ session’ which has been so popular in the last few years. Besides the scientific bonanza, we promise to offer delegates a great opportunity to establish new contacts, pick up pearls of wisdom from experienced colleagues and of course enjoy the conference dinner at the De Vere Beaumont Estate in Old Windsor on Thursday evening.

I am very excited about holding this conference in London, and the venue is especially conveniently located for ease of access for everyone. Ladies and gentlemen, many things are uncertain after Brexit 2019, but one thing is certain - BMLA 2019 is going to be the biggest and best BMLA conference to date! We look forward to welcoming you to London.

Vishal Madan, President BMLA

SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE WELCOMEThe BMLA annual conference is the leading laser conference in the UK and this is reflected in both the quality of the talks and the culture of lively and respectful debate. As always, our core sessions on laser safety and science, PDT, biophotonics and skin lasers are showcasing some of the world’s leading experts and their cutting-edge work. This is bolstered by the very popular nursing and therapist session organised by Sister Kerry Muggeson and Sister Natalie Allen and a session dedicated to adult and paediatric dermatology organised by Dr Samira Syed.

I am delighted to welcome new topics on lasers in dentistry which have been driven by our newest executive member Dr Reem Hanna. Lasers in dentistry is an important sector which continues to grow and develop at a fast rate and this promises to be a regular feature at future BMLA conferences.

The last couple of years have seen considerable progress with regulations, standards and education around laser treatment and this is reflected in our special session on education and regulation as well as a great debate where we will analyse two years of the BMLA Essential Standards as well as launching some new guidelines – make sure that you don’t miss it!

It is my pleasure to welcome Prof Eric Sidebottom who will be providing this year’s Oswal Oration on the development of Penicillin. Prof Sidebottom’s distinguished career includes work in medicine and teaching at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology Oral Histories, Oxford University (where he is now an official historian) and his thought-provoking talk on medical history will provide us with interest and perspective.

It is with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of San Francisco based dermatologist Dr Vic Narurkar in January. He had kindly agreed to provide a talk as an invited speaker at this year’s conference and Dr Vishal Madan will say a few words on this as BMLA Chairman during session 6.

Finally, I highly recommend that you visit our Problem Page session early Friday afternoon. This is a highly popular and educational session where you have the opportunity to discuss rare and unexpected complications with an expert panel and strong audience input.

I look forward to seeing you around.

Tom Lister,Scientific Programme Chair
