Plot Summary The writer was first visit to the village and her mother told her that the

village is associated with difficulties and loneliness. However, she was quite

enjoying her life in the village. Her uncle, Kinto always bring her to

everywhere and their relationships were very good. One day, the writer 

roamed in the village alone when the writer’s uncle was busying with his

family property. Then, she met a little girl who asked her to join them to

play. At first, the writer refused to play with them, but the charm and the

friendliness of the children have attracted her to join them.

The writer was enjoyed playing with them. The little girl jumped onto

the little islet to pick up some Blumea flower for the writer. After that, the little

girl’s step-brother came and asked the little girl to back home. The next day, the

writer’s mother insisted to back home and Uncle Kinto prepared some food for 

them for the journey home. The writer felt sad when leaves the village and she

cried when she knew that she will not come back again as her mother handed

over the house and land to Uncle Kinto.

Theme The life in the village is difference with the life of the cities.

•There were too many restrictions in the city but in

the village, people are free to do anything.

•The view of the village is beautiful and harmonic.

Example: “While I stood there hesitating, the little girl pulled my hand.”

Uncle Kinto

• A friendly person because he bring writer 

to the hills and taught her a lot of things.

•Had a very good relationship with his

nephew (writer).

• A caring person because he had packed for the writer 

some food for the journey.

•Wariness- he always carried his old shot-gun with him.

The Little girl

•Lived with her step-mother and step-brother.

• A playful girl

Example: when the writer asked “what are you playing?”

and she answered “all kinds…..” 

•Brave

In the story: Suddenly she jumped into the marsh and waded to a fallen

tree trunk that reached out to a little islet in the middle of the marsh.

•Mischief because she had destroyed the writer “frog holes”. 

• A friendly girl because she had invited the writer to join her for the

game and she also gave flower to the writer.

• A moody person ( she never smile in this whole story)

•Jealousy- in the story, the writer had mentioned that she had

detected the signs of jealousy in her mother’s eyes when she

were inseparable with her uncle)
