“YOU ARE ONE DECISION AWAY FROM A TOTALLY DIFFERENT

LIFE” (Mark Batterson, All In).

A few years ago, we studied Mark Batterson’s book The Circle Maker and that study served as a catalyst to a renewed vision for God’s call for ministry within our own community. Recently, some of our small groups have been studying God’s Word through the use of Batterson’s challenging 2013 book entitled, All In. George Scarborough introduced me to this study when he facilitated All In with our Men’s Ministry and I learned a lot that has intrigued me to go deeper this summer. Starting in June, we will be looking at some of the Biblical truths that the All In study introduces during our Sunday worship services. I am excited about the potential that this series holds for me, you, Webber and our community. If there is anything in your life that you would like to be empowered to change, this sermon series is for you. Coming next fall, we will be starting a series entitled “We Believe” that will take us through a Biblical reminder of what we believe about God and how that impacts our lives. It is similar in style with our series a few years ago entitled “The Story.” Some of our small groups will be studying along with the sermon series and I am looking forward to helping us all have a clearer understanding of our faith. This will serve as a great starter for those who

are new to the faith and it will be surprisingly helpful to those of us who have known Christ for a long time. The more we KNOW about God and ourselves, the more we will GROW, CARE and Share. God is bringing some new friends to our neighborhood. Our Trustees have been working with Finer Homes as they gear up to begin construction this summer on what will eventually be about 120 new homes in the Windermere sub division right behind our campus. It is exciting to see God growing our community and I want to encourage you to be praying about Webber’s opportunity to be a beacon of God’s light for these new families. Hopefully, we will be a source of answered prayers for some of these families and I believe that God may also be bringing some answers to some of our prayers through them. We are learning more and more about why God led Webber to move our campus to this particular location and I can’t wait to see what God has in store for us next! “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10.

Why FCA CAMP? By Linda Luck

Recently I came across an article by Andy Blanks entitled, Changing The Way We Think About Sports And Youth Ministry. It articulates my sentiments regarding the Fellowship of Christian Athletes camp option, July 6-10, on the University of Richmond campus. The majority of our students play school, travel and/or recreational sports, often more than one season. All four of my own children had numerous church/sport conflicts. More and more commonplace is the trend toward Sunday tournaments, even during Easter

weekend. Blanks elaborates: "While it can feel like it at times, teenagers aren't choosing sports over you personally. We have to step back and consider what sports does in the lives of teenagers. It satisfies their need for competition. It puts them in a spotlight that is fun and exciting, one they really can't get anywhere else. When done in a healthy way, athletics provides a unique family bonding experience. Sports provide a lot of positives in the lives of our students. And while it stinks at times, we can't take it personally when they choose to attend practice over youth group… While this frustration is understandable, I want to challenge us all to take a step back and reconsider how we think about this. Frustration, while not an unexpected response, won't help anything... Remember, your programs aren't sacred. You don't serve them. They serve you. … Shift your paradigm. If your ministry is hurting because your athletes won't or can't come to you, figure out how to go to them. Make your ministry one that is flexible enough to go where students are. If you can do this, you may even find that you reach a group of students that you

previously weren't reaching." Until last year Black Mountain was the closest such camp. U of R is in our area and a fine institution (home of the Baptist Historical Society). Athletes draw from Virginia and surrounding states. Camp offers 14 guy and girl sports led by coaches (some D1), college athletes, trained volunteers. It is comparable in cost to most

weeklong camps. Fee increases after June 12. Webber is not in the position to subsidize attendees, nor fundraise. Consider, however, there are no chaperones to secure, nor transportation costs. My deadlines have passed; however, athletes may register directly online as long as spots are available. Fliers are throughout the church.

Andy Blank’s article is not endorsing FCA. I am. The organization is in many of Chesterfield's high schools, and even some middle, as well as college campuses. Surely, the ideal goal of Webber Youth Ministry is to offer sound programming that attracts young people and is supported by parents and volunteers. This is not our current situation. Putting my ego aside, I would claim the most insightful line of the posting is, "your programs are not sacred." If our students cannot come to Webber regularly because of sports, perhaps they will attend school year Fellowship of Christian Athlete meetings and activities after being introduced to it at camp. This will improve their spiritual awareness, familiarity with Scripture and prayer, identification with likeminded coaches/teammates/boosters, and develop discipleship. It is another way of equipping young people. Certainly such benefits are sacred within

or outside of Webber’s walls.
