Greenhand FFA Members Attend Camp Noah Wheeler Named FFA Student of the Month
Eighteen freshmen members of the Blanco FFA recently
traveled to Fredericksburg to participate in the Annual Hill
District FFA Leadership Camp.
Students attending were introduced to the many opportuni-

leadership workshops and team building activities while also
meeting the current Hill District and Area VII FFA Officers.
Many of these same students will also attend a more in depth
leadership workshop on the area level when they attend the
Area VII FFA Greenhand Leadership Camp.
Local FFA members who attended the Hill District camp
included: Front/Middle Rows L-R: Sierra Theriot, Kiara
Carrasco, Kyla Davis, Jada Hector, Kora Brock, Addy Sey-
mour, Malinda Campbell, Luke Biggs, Kolby Marek, Brandt

Five Students Named to
All Region Jazz Band
Five Blanco High School students were named to the Region
12 ATSSB All-Region Jazz Band at competition held Saturday,
September 17, at La Vernia High School.
“I was really proud of our students, because they played at
the Randolph football game the night before, and met at the
high school at 7:00 AM the next morning,” said band director
Brian Hecimovich.
Twenty-nine schools competed in the contest, their sizes
ranging from 1A—4A.
Out of the five BHS students that competed, four advanced
to the Area round. Area qualifying students record their audi-
tions, which are then sent to the state office for judging for the
Texas All-State Jazz Band.
Blanco’s Lady Panthers put their undefeated district record
on the line this evening as they travel to Lago Vista to take on
the Lady Vikings.
“Lago Vista has very strong middle blockers,” said head
coach Amy Hackebeil. “We will need to stay aggressive so that
they won’t be able to access their middles often.”
Lago Vista will be a tough matchup for the Panthers. They
have only one district loss, with that loss coming against unde-
feated Johnson City.
“I’m excited that we have had success at all three levels thus
far in district,” said Hackebeil. “We know we have strong op-
ponents in our next three matches (Lago Vista, Johnson City,
and Gateway), but we look forward to the big competition.”
“The second half of the first round of district play will be
exhilarating.”
The Lady Panthers return home next Tuesday vs. Johnson
City, who is 3—0 in district and
19—4 on the year.
“We are so grateful to the
teachers and administrators who
show their support for our pro-
gram,” said Hackebeil.
“Next Tuesday we will be
honoring our teachers. We look
forward to playing for the home
crowd!”

Alcohol and Energy Drink Mixtures:
Dead Asleep before You Know It! (Part 1)
As part of our effort to reduce substance abuse by our young peo-
ple, The Bell will be running Public Service Announcements each
week to educate students and parents in regards to substance abuse.
Today’s information, comes from a pamphlet titled “Alcohol and
Energy Drink Mixtures: Dead Asleep before You Know It!” pub-
lished by Primo Promotions, LLC, Reserve, LA, 2009.
Alcohol and Caffeine—A Knock Out Combo
We all know that alcohol has short-term effects on your
brain: drowsiness, slurred words, blurred vision, and inability
to think straight. But what you may not know is that drinking
alcohol can have serious long-term effects on your brain, in-
cluding:
Permanent memory loss
Brain shrinkage
Reduced learning and reasoning abilities
Damage to dendrites—the nerve cells that let your brain
cells talk to each other
Although you may not realize it, caffeine is also a drug. And,
just like any other drug, it can have some pretty serious side
effects:
Insomnia
Tremors
Nausea
Sweating
Vomiting and diarrhea
So when you combine
alcohol and caffeine, you
are giving your body a one
-two knock out combina-
tion that can be seriously
damaging.
A Lethal Combination
For honor student Ashley Ramnauth, it was just another Fri-
day night. After saying goodbye to her parents, the 16-year-old
Florida honors student hopped into a car with friends and head-
ed to a party.
Several hours later, Ashley returned home and passed out.
When they were unable to wake her, Ashley’s family called
911—but it was too late. Ashley Ram-
nauth, who loved hanging out with her
friends and dreamed of becoming a
lawyer someday—died at the hospital.
The cause? A fatal combination of
alcohol and energy drinks.
