The Institute for the Future (www.iftf.org) for the University of Phoenix Research Institute published astudy the Future Work Skills 2020. Thereport analyzes key drivers that willreshape the landscape of work andidentifies key work skills needed inthe next 10 years.

Rather than focusing on future jobs, this report looks at futurework skills i.e., proficiencies and abilities required acrossdifferent jobs and work settings. The followingsummarizes the major findings.

Globally Connected World: Increased globalinterconnectivity puts diversity andadaptability at the center of organizationaloperations.At its most basic level, globalization is the long­term trend toward greater exchanges andintegration across geographic and cultural borders.Presence in areas where new competitors arepopping up is critical to survival.

Sense­Making: ability to determine the deepermeaning or significance of what is being expressed.

Social Intelligence: ability to connect to others in adeep and direct way, to sense and stimulate reactionsand desired interactions.

Novel & Adaptive Thinking: proficiency at thinkingand coming up with solutions and responses beyondthat which is rote or rule­based.

Cross­Cultural Competency: ability to operate indifferent cultural settings.

Computational Thinking: ability to translate vastamounts of data into abstract concepts and tounderstand data­based reasoning.

New­Media Literacy: ability to critically assess anddevelop content that uses new media forms, and toleverage these media for persuasive communication.

What does this study mean to you?To be successful in the next decade, you will needto demonstrate foresight in navigating arapidly shifting landscape of organizational lifeand skill requirements. First, you will need to continually reassess the skillsyou need as you pay close attention to a changing

work landscape. Second, quickly put together the right resources to develop andupdate these skills and adapt to new requirements. Your career inthe future will need to be adjustable and flexible and you will need tobe a lifelong learner.

What's the message here?

Vigilance, training, knowledge transfer, lifelong learningand an escalating demand for your biggest asset ­ your brain ­ is part and parcel ofyour career success. Youmust assume moreresponsibility for maintainingand upgrading your skills andcompetencies than inprevious generations. You will need to reinventyourself, your role, yourcareer, and most critically ­your self­awareness. Everyfew years as skill requirements escalates, as the demands anddefinitions of jobs change, and as your organization goes throughchange, mergers, acquisitions, downsizing or restructuring, youmust adapt to survive and sustain.
