was made up of 13 colonies that belonged to

Moving Towards Independence

• The colonists thought that the government of England treated them unfairly. The government in England was made up of King George III and Parliament.

• The Declaration of Independence list all of the reasons the colonist were unhappy with England, and they felt all people should be equal under the law

The Committee, forming a new Government

• Once the United States of America became a new country, it needed a new government. In 1777, the Continental Congress, in which these men were a part of, met to talk about how the new country should be run. The representatives wrote a paper called the Articles of Confederation.

Articles of Confederation

• The Articles of Confederation was a paper that said how the government would work.It was going to make its government different than England's.

• No one wanted one person to have all the power to govern over the people.

• By 1781 all 13 states agreed on the Articles that were written .

The Engrossed Declaration

• Major -- No one person has the right to govern over all the people

• Minor –England was trying to do just that to the American people. They did not like that at all.

• Conclusion – This is what gave the Americans the right to make their on form of government. A Central Government

A more perfect Union

• Some of the leaders were not happy with the Articles of Confederation, they felt it was only a loose alliance with the 13 states.

• Instead of rewriting it they wrote a new paper called the Constitution.

• It replaced the Articles of Confederation.• The Constitution created the strong national

government all were looking for.

• The constitution made sure the government would treat the people fairly

• The writers of the constitution wanted the people of the United States to feel like Americans.

• For states to work together as a team• And a strong central government to take

care of its people
