Colonists grew tired of taxation without representation, many specific concerns
Examples: Townshend Duties, Sugar Act, Stamp Act, Tea Act, “Intolerable” Acts
Began to rebel against Great Britain
Declaration of Independence/ Thomas Jefferson- listed grievances against the king
Fought a war against British, won our independence!
THE TREATY OF PARIS, 1783
Officially ended the American RevolutionSet many geographic borders, including U.S. and CanadaFlorida was returned to SpainBritish merchants must be paid for lost itemsLoyalists must be paid for lost property
AFTERMATH
Penalties inflicted on Loyalists
Some Loyalists were “tarred and feathered” and put on ships bound for Canada or Great Britain
Then the task at hand became: how to forge a new government? Many problems loomed ahead!!
ASSIGNMENTS
You will assume the identity of an American Colonist right after winning independence. You will write a letter to whomever discussing your hopes, fears or uncertainty you feel as a citizen of a new nation.
